| bill | posted 21-Oct-2006 10:34am A few companies operating factories that release chemicals into the air which polute the environment, affecting many other people, for generations to come. The needs of the people affected by the pollution far outweigh the needs of the few companies trying to profit from operating factories. |
| dab | posted 21-Oct-2006 11:15am I don't think needs are additive in that way. |
| ROCKMAN | posted 21-Oct-2006 11:15am I can't think of one right off. |
| JessicaWoman99 | posted 21-Oct-2006 12:25pm There are lots of people in this world who are in need, and it far outweighs the fewer people in need and who need help the most |
| LindaH | posted 21-Oct-2006 12:44pm Whenever I try to think of something that will answer this question, it turns out that the "needs" of the few aren't true needs after all. If someone needs something more than you do, you probably don't need it. You might deserve it, you might have every right to it, but you don't "need" it. |

| southernyankee | posted 21-Oct-2006 1:09pm In a hostage situation where you can take out the guys holding everyone up to free the survivors, even if some of the hostages get killed. During 9/11, if the government could, they should have shot down the planes headed for the towers, even though the passengers would have died. If a very deadly, very contagious disease spreads, and theres a need to quanertnine people. War. Other extreme situations.
Outside of that, individual rights should trump group rights. |
| LJD | posted 21-Oct-2006 2:00pm Loaded question! There are several scenarios, when it comes to life and death. Scenarios can be reversed also. In this scenario (not of life and death) Why should a smaller number suffer because a larger suffers? . |
| mve17 | posted 21-Oct-2006 2:59pm When I'm fat and hungry..
I'm big and need food far more than the starving. |
| Zang | posted 21-Oct-2006 3:27pm Life in general. I suppose it depends on who the many are and who the few are. I'm thinking of the many people living in abject poverty and the few billionaires... |
| cloudhugger | posted 21-Oct-2006 4:22pm Are you sure that quote is right? |
| gambler | (reply to cloudhugger) posted 21-Oct-2006 4:59pm I seem to remember this line from a Star Trek "Wrath of Khan" when Spock, goes into some radio active room to give the Enterprise back its warp drive , so that it could away from the genesis bomb...... I am sure If I am wrong someone will tell me |
| ausfox | posted 21-Oct-2006 5:27pm Here is one... everyone in the world needs to go into nuclear fallout shelters. A few people want to be allowed out to look for loved ones. Opening the shelters could mean death for everyone in there. The needs of the many, far outweigh the needs of a few. |
| RGirl | posted 21-Oct-2006 6:04pm This might not be popular & it wouldn't benefit me any but I do believe a socialized medicine program is needed in the US and I think this statement applies.
Sometimes medical research falls into this category. You have only so much money to spend and you'd have to spend it on the diseases that afflict so many people as opposed to something extremely rare. |
| cloudhugger | (reply to gambler) posted 22-Oct-2006 12:59am the sentence didn't make sense to me, but than not standing in a radioactive room being in warp drive avoiding a genesis bomb would probably influence my opinion of it.

| Enigma | posted 22-Oct-2006 3:59pm [On whether Kirk should assume command from Spock]
Spock: If I may be so bold, it was a mistake for you to accept promotion. Commanding a starship is your first, best destiny; anything else is a waste of material. Kirk: I would not presume to debate you. Spock: That is wise. Were I to invoke logic, however, logic clearly dictates that the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. Kirk: Or the one. Spock: You are my superior officer. You are also my friend. I have been and always shall be yours. It would sound better to me as "the needs of the many outweigh the wants of a few". |
| gazelda1 | posted 22-Oct-2006 4:38pm I think the plane that went down in PA on 911 was a perfect example of living for that. Those people died so that that plane could not do what the others did. |
