On the outside!

Having worked as a gas jockey for many years in my youth, I have a very strong opinion on this topic! The gas cap should always be on the outside of the vehicle! Putting it on the inside is both inconvenient and dangerous!

That being said, it doesn't matter as long as the driver knows where it is so they can park their vehicle in such a manner that the gas cap is proximal to the pump.

I say drivers side for everyone. That way I won't feel like an idiot pulling into the gas station on the wrong side. I still do with my own car on occasion.

Driver's side. I'm not good at gauging the other side of the car in relation to the kerb, bowser, parking, etc.

Drivers side towards the rear. It makes sense when you drive up to the filler upper.

Never really thought about it....I guess on the passenger's side might make the most sense. You could park close to the gas pump and you still be able to open the driver's door as wide as you want without hitting anything.

I do have an observation, though. My car, along with many (close to all) that I rent have it on the passenger side.

The gas cap should be on the same side as the gas tank, at the top of the pipe leading to said gas tank.

I don't know. But if I had a car, Id steal one off another colour car so I could have a different colour gas cap to my car. Sounds like a plan.

I thought you were going to say so the passenger can get out and do the gas for you, a little joke like. I forgot about not being able to open the door all the way.

I think they should be behind the license plate but I guess that's not practical because they're not put there anymore.

I'd prefer it on the driver's side, but it's not a big deal if it's not.

Ha!
When I first thought about this question, I didn't really have an answer. Here in Hong Kong, you do not pump your own gas so it really doesn't matter which side the tank is on. However, when I thought about being back home in the US, I figured the passenger side would be better.

Driver's.. like mine is on the Element.

Why are there options for left/right as well?

The right side seems to work just fine.

My first thought was the options of left/right. Then I realized that for people who drive left-hand drive cars, that wasn't as clear as I might like. I left those options in because some people might have wanted left or right no matter which side the steering wheel was on. And in fact, someone chose 'right'.

Thanks for the explanation.... left/right always confuses me when people refer to their cars..... who's right?

Left/right in general is confusing I think but it especially confuses me with pictures.

On the outside of course... Although back when I was first driving, I had an old 1937 Chevy Truck that you had to lift the seat to fill the gas tank...that was a pain... As for which side, who cares...although it would be nice if they made it standard. I had a Chevy S-10 and a Chevy Tracker..The gas caps were on different sides and it was interesting trying to remember which side to have toward the gas pump....

The gas cap should be on the left side just like my car, and I remember the older cars back in the 50's they had gas caps in the rear bumper

Do you remember the cars that had gas caps under the license plates? My Uncles car had this feature

Probably because of environmental issues. I used to pump gas and cars with the filler behind the license plate frequently spilled gas on the pavement. Several vehicle models were famous for shooting out gas and soaking my slacks. Gasoline itches.

My dad will not buy a car without the gas on drivers side.

I prefer the driver's side gas cap.

I've been with multi-car people who had to stop and remember which side before driving to the gas pump!
