Depends. If it is freezing outside I wouldn't remove my glove. Otherwise I would remove one to shake. |
| RainingFeathers | | posted 14-Sep-2006 8:07pm |
No. I'd only be wearing gloves if I was outside in very cold weather. I'd definitely not take off my gloves in that situation. Of course, it's not very likely that someone will offer to shake hands outdoors in winter, but I guess it could happen. |

I wear latex gloves at work. Normally I think I would remove my gloves because that is my first thought when I have been in the situation of shaking someone’s hands. I usually remember though that if I take my gloves off my hands are going to be sweaty so instead I tell the person," I hope you don't mind but if I take my gloves off you’re not going to want to shake my hand." |

So what dose Ms.Etiquette say you should do? |

Circumstances would dictate my behavior. |
Enheduanna | | posted 14-Sep-2006 8:26pm |
It would depend on where I was. If I were inside, then I probably would, if I felt like it wouldn't take too long and rudely leave the person hanging. If I were outside in the cold, then I would leave the glove on. |

| Amanda | | posted 14-Sep-2006 9:26pm |
I doubt I'd remove them. I rarely wear gloves, so it's a non-issue for me. |
| Enigma | | posted 14-Sep-2006 10:39pm |
I always remove my gloves first. Unless we are both gloved and are outside in freezing conditions. Then if the other person removed their glove first, I would remove mine. Otherwise I wouldn't for mutual handshaking comfort in the cold. |
| hypersky | | posted 14-Sep-2006 11:02pm |
I would always remove my gloves first. I think it's basic decency/courtesy. |

Enigma, dear, you've got this whole glove etiquette thing down to an art. Good on you!!! |

Amy Vanderbilt's "Everyday Etiquette" (1952) says that a gentleman always removes his gloves before shaking hands. Ladies should leave their gloves on unless they are shaking hands with someone on the level of a President, Prime Minister, Royalty, Pope, Bishop etc.
It's kind of obscure. I was curious how people would respond and if there would in fact be a significant gender difference in the Advanced Stats.

Okay, I just checked and there is! The largest majority of ladies selected "It would depend on the circumstances." followed by "I would never remove my gloves first". The gentlemen overwhelming selected "I would always remove my gloves first."
Looks like we've got a pretty civilised group here! |
| ausfox | | posted 15-Sep-2006 12:13am |
I've never been in that situation that I can remember, but I don't think I would take them off. It probably wouldn't even occur to me. |
| clare | | posted 15-Sep-2006 12:56am |
It would depend on the circumstances. The only time I'm wearing gloves is when it's cold outside. If I was inside and still had my gloves on, I'd remove them before shaking hands. If outside, I leave them on. |
Melf | | posted 15-Sep-2006 2:06am |

I believe it is proper etiquette to remove gloves before a handshake. When I was young, it seemed everyone used gloves, especially women. |

I don't wear gloves. |
Iseult | | posted 15-Sep-2006 2:30pm |
Probably not, but I really don't know since I don't remember ever being in this situation. |
| Jody | | posted 15-Sep-2006 3:28pm |
If it's really cold outside I would not remove my glove. If I was wearing a rubber glove after cleaning something filthy, I would remove it. I seldom wear evening gloves, so I don't think that's much of a problem, but full-length evening gloves are difficult to put on and off, so I would probably leave them on rather than make a fuss by removing them. |
| llamamama | | posted 15-Sep-2006 4:22pm |
I don't know..I don't usually shake hands...and I only wear gloves when it snows..which it never does..I know it's hypothetical..but gord..I dunno..
Remove one? |
| ultamate | | (reply to Zang) posted 15-Sep-2006 4:57pm |
I guess I'm the one that is uncivilized 'cause although I said it would depend on the circumstances, I would normally remove my gloves. |
Zang | | (reply to ultamate) posted 16-Sep-2006 2:30am |
But you still chose "It would depend on the circumstances." which is the "correct" answer! |
| CGTREE | | posted 16-Sep-2006 9:43am |
Well that would depend on the circumstances of course....If I'm out side and it's really cold...then no I would not remove my gloves....if I have work gloves on and they're dirty and the other guy has clean hands, then I would remove my gloves. If I was one of those people who are worried about germs and bacteria and stuff then I would probably not remove my gloves... |

I don't wear gloves, or shake hands.

cerealkiller | | (reply to Amanda) posted 18-Sep-2006 1:18pm |
Survey is about winter gloves, not latex........... |
| Amanda |
It didn't specify. |
Zang |
Yeah, actually I didn't think it mattered what kind of glove. I had all kinds of gloves in mind. Most people seem to have responded with winter gloves in mind. I only ever use latex or rubber gloves myself (at work). I have winter gloves, they were a gift. It never gets cold enough around here to use them though... |
| Biggles | | posted 22-Sep-2006 11:57am |
How unexpected is the handshake? (I may not have time to remeove my gloves without appearing rude) Am I shaking hands with someone wearing gloves? (If they are wearing gloves and they initiate the handshake then it would be bad manners for me to remove my gloves and therefore suggest that they were remiss in not dong the same). Am I in a situation where I am expected to be tough and business-like (remove the gloves) or a situation where I should be ladylike (keep the gloves on)? What kind of gloves are they? (The more fitted they are, the more acceptable it is to keep them on)
It's a complex issue! |
| MiniMary | | (reply to Zang) posted 5-Oct-2006 4:44pm |
My white pearl gloves remain on my hands all day and all night. |
Zang | | (reply to MiniMary) posted 30-Oct-2006 1:34pm |
Don't you take them off to launder them? |
| MiniMary | | (reply to Zang) posted 30-Oct-2006 5:39pm |
You would never launder pearl gloves. (That would be the end of the pearls!) They can be dry cleaned...but you are taking a risk there, as well. So a toothbrush a mild cleanser does the trick....and I can do that with my gloves on, Zang. |
| kitti723 |
I don't think I'd remove my gloves unless the were latex or rubber gloves. |
| patarnone | | posted 28-Nov-2006 2:54pm |
I would remove my gloves, or at least the "right" one... I like the feel of real skin. |
