Applying lipstick is about it. |

Four items only... |

Although some of these are certainly less offensive than others, I prefer that people do all their grooming in private. |

I don't care, really. The only ones that are really understandable are the ones dealing with personal comfort. Cleaning your nose (with a tissue!) is understandable, if there's something in there causing discomfort. The same goes for picking teeth. No one should have to sit in physical discomfort to cater to people who can simply look away. |

Applying foundation, for maybe a touch-up, and applying lipstick, if it's done quietly and quickly. Most of the other choices seem silly. |

I mainly considered what might ruin other peoples drinks or food. Perfume or hairspary, the smell of nail polish or remover. Something that is just gross to look at like picking at your toenail dirt. If I have to do more than a little nose blowing I excuse myself & go to the restroom. |

None of those! |

Applying lipstick is the only one I . |

Most of these don't bother me, so I guess that means they are acceptable. Even the ruder ones, I'd just shrug off, if I saw it. But, I guess I'd prefer that none of them were done in public. Though, I'd like to be excused from having to follow that rule. Not that I really need to do any of these in public, but, if I had to, I'd like to have the option. Which, I guess it why it really doesn't bother me that much to see other people doing stuff like this, occasionally. Really, I almost never see inappropriate public grooming, I think. So, this isn't a concern of mine. |

I would say touching up the pressed powder is ok.. but for all else..there is a reason the bathroom has mirrors |
Matty | | posted 14-Sep-2006 8:38am |
pretty much anything that doesn't involve cleaning yourself; applying makeup and such is ok |
Enheduanna | | posted 14-Sep-2006 12:20pm |
Applying lipstick, blowing one's nose, and very minimal picking of teeth are the only grooming habits that are acceptable in public. |

I always whip my feet out in cafes and give them a good going over. |

Of these, I would allow picking teeth and lipstick..... I don't wear lipstick.. but I wear clear gloss or lip balm and I put it on it public. |

I'd say all except picking the nose. |

Where's "pulling out nose hairs and eating them"? One of my favorite activities. |
| ultamate | | posted 14-Sep-2006 8:44pm |
None of the above, although I am guilty of applying lipstick and filing my nails (that is if I need to file a rough edge). |
| Enigma | | posted 14-Sep-2006 10:34pm |
Who in heavens name would ever consider "Squeezing pimples/blackheads" or "Removing toenail varnish" something that should be done in public?

Applying eyeshadow, lipstick, and perfume/cologne. |

I hate it when people apply fragrances in public, then I just happen to walk into their residual cloud. It triggers my allergies. |
southernyankee | | posted 15-Sep-2006 5:15pm |
applying lipstick, eye shadow, eye liner, hair combing (this one is kinda pushing it) are acceptable imo.
I have been guilty of the following: clearing ears, nose, clearing nose, plucking eyebrows, clearing out "eye bugers", squeezing pimples, picking teeth, clearing finger nails; even though I dont think its acceptable. The worse I've witnessed was some girl applying underarm deoderant. Kinda getho if you ask me. I've done it myself except I had the tact to go to the men's room to do it.
I don't have much room to critize others, but some people really push it. |

Isn't tasty when it lands on your food either. Same with hair spray. |

wow!!! what a list of mostly very personal procedures that should only be done in your bathroom. |

Also changing clothes, but only if you are a good looking female... Now that would be VERY acceptible....ROFL... |

What? No option for drinking beer? WTF??!! |
Zang | | posted 19-Sep-2006 5:56pm |
Incidentally, Amy Vanderbilt's "Everyday Etiquette" (1952) says that the rules have become more relaxed "recently" and now lipstick & foundation/powder may be applied in public.
Interesting that "lipstick" is the only option with a majority and "hair combing" is in second place. Even "picking teeth" is more acceptable than "applying foundation/powder" which is tied with "none of the above". |

I would say all of the above in public and who cares if I put on my lipstick or brush my teeth in public, and put on my mascara or eye shadow??? |

Plucking my eyebrows and driving at 65 mph sheesh" |
| kitti723 |
I depends on where you are. Let me just say from personal experience that some things I wouldn't do in public anywhere else I will do in an airport bathroom or on a plane. Like plucking my eyebrows, applying makeup, brushing my teeth and hair, filing nails, & flossing. |

I anticipated that sort of response. That's why I gave an example. |
| patarnone | | posted 28-Nov-2006 3:37pm |
I don't think any of the grooming listed above should be done in public. Certainly never in any eating establishment.
Lipstick or using a toothpick are the only exceptions.
Icky poo. |
