| ultamate | posted 30-Jun-2006 8:15pm other, I've heard of 3 of them but I can't say I like any of them 'cause I don't know what they wrote or if I read anything they wrote. |
| Enheduanna | posted 30-Jun-2006 8:34pm I have heard of all of them, although I haven't read any James, Lewis, or Forster. I didn't like the Hardy, Wharton, or Dreiser that I've read--in fact, I'd say I hated them all. I like some Woolf, but some of her stuff is just too impenetrable.
You seem awfully fond of authors who like to write about naive young women who get taken advantage of by evil, opportunistic men. I bet you're a lesbian. |
| they | posted 30-Jun-2006 9:01pm Other:
I haven't read anything by any of these people. |
| RGirl | (reply to Enheduanna) posted 30-Jun-2006 10:44pm Hey, never thought of that. Let's see, James-yes, Forster- not really, Hardy-not always, Wharton-in a way sometimes I guess, Dreiser- definitely.
I like a lot of other authors but these are my top faves. Now I'm going to have to go into therapy to figure out what the connection is. How did you know it was my survey? |
| eloradanan | posted 1-Jul-2006 12:08am I've heard of all these authors, but I've only read Henry James & Sinclair Lewis. I liked Henry James better than Sinclair Lewis. |
| Enheduanna | (reply to RGirl) posted 1-Jul-2006 1:51am There was another survey where you and I had an exchange about Tess of the D'Urbervilles, and you may also have mentioned Sister Carrie or some other Dreiser. Those are two of my least favorite books and prime culprits of the genre of crapty things happening to naive young women, and I guess our discussion just stuck in my mind. |
| Melf | posted 1-Jul-2006 2:43am I only like Thomas Hardy, but I haven't heard of all of them. |
| Pomeranian | posted 1-Jul-2006 3:09am I am big admirer of Sinclair Lewis; "Elmer Gantry", "Main Street" and "Babbit" in particular. They are the saddest and most real novels that I have yet read. |
| RGirl | (reply to Enheduanna) posted 1-Jul-2006 3:34am Oh, Ok. I don't remember that. I don't mind that you have that opinion though. Liking an author and the material is such an individual thing and I have plenty of things I don't like about other authors that other people like. I just don't like it when some gets an uppity attitude about it. You know, well if you don't like these you must be stupid, or have depth or culture. The exception for me are modern romance novels. I don't hold them in regard. |
| Frostbrand | posted 1-Jul-2006 3:58am I've heard of all of these, but I haven't read any of them (though I do own a copy of Ethan Frome). |
| ROCKMAN | posted 1-Jul-2006 9:59am I've heard of most of these but I don't ead books so I don't have a favorite. |
| Iseult | posted 1-Jul-2006 11:36am I don't like any. I've only read two of them, neither favourites, but still good. I've had Theodore Dreiser in the back of my head for a while now, but I keep forgetting about him. Still re-reading Harry Potter series to have time to read real books. Hopefully soon will be done, on HP&GOF now. |
| Enheduanna | (reply to RGirl) posted 1-Jul-2006 12:27pm I certainly don't think less of you for liking them, either! I think it's interesting that you like several authors who write in a similar dark vein, but I certainly realize that it's just a matter of taste. They are also all authors who are very highly regarded by various literary types, and I am not about to say that everyone else is wrong about them! |
| icurok | posted 1-Jul-2006 12:56pm I've heard of most of them, but not read a book by any of them. |
| RainingFeathers | posted 1-Jul-2006 2:17pm I've heard of all of them, but I haven't read any of their work. |
| RGirl | (reply to Enheduanna) posted 1-Jul-2006 2:45pm Ooops. That should have been 'not have depth or culture'. And I have always been drawn to the darker side of things much of the time. |
| Enheduanna | (reply to RGirl) posted 1-Jul-2006 2:50pm I hadn't even noticed! |
| Cain | posted 1-Jul-2006 4:03pm Other - I don't know if I like them because I've never read their work. |
| gambler | posted 1-Jul-2006 5:27pm I have heard of most of these, but not my cup of tea |
| Zang | posted 1-Jul-2006 7:36pm I don't believe I have ever read any of these authors. A couple of the names are familiar. That's about it. |
| Enigma | posted 1-Jul-2006 7:38pm I've had to read most of these authors. Lewis is okay... read him a looonngggg time ago and haven't felt the need to revisit. |
| Biggles | posted 4-Jul-2006 6:21pm I don't think that I've read anything by any of them. |
| kitti723 | posted 8-Jul-2006 3:12pm Jack Kerouac |
