Have you ever had to have your pet put to sleep?

Tonight was very difficult for me and my family.
We had to have our dog "Lady" put to sleep.
She was dying of Kidney Disease and as of tonight her body just couldn't go any farther.
Lady was 15 yrs old.

I'm very sorry about Lady. I've not yet had to do this but at some point I won't have any choice.

Other, a family pet has been put to sleep when I was tiny, so I don't really remember it. He was called Dexter, and I can't remember what was wrong with him. All I remember is my mum coming home and saying he'd been put to sleep. I asked when he was going to wake up.

I'll say no. I did have a pet die, they brought her back to life, then asked me if I wanted them to do it if it happened again. I said no, let her go, but hers was a very sudden incident. She had a massive stroke is what they said. I found a kitten once on the side of the road with broken hind legs. They'd healed broken and they would have to rebreak them with surgery and stuff. I was a teen, couldn't kee a cat and the money for the vet visit was coming out of my pocket. The decision was to have her put to sleep. Better than her starving the death because she couldn't walk at all. So she ended without pain and a name and a record that she did, in fact, exist. We took the remains and buried her in a field. But I'd only had her for about 48hrs so I can't say that counts.

I have 4 dogs. I am prepared to have any of them put to sleep if they are in pain or have no quality of life. It will be tremendously sad, but I couldn't see them in pain. I think it is a blessing your Lady had wonderful owners who were able to make that decision for her.

My brother did that with the kitten I mentioned. It is a horrible thing to explain to a kid. The look in their eyes when they wrap their minds around what you just said is not easy to watch.

I've put a Scottish Terrier to sleep, and two Golden Retrevers.. just what you have to do.

 * frown * We were sat in the garden by his hutch; He was this little ginger rabbit. I guess my mum thought I knew what it meant... harsh situation to have to describe it.

I haven't. I'm so sorry you had to go through this. I know people who have had to put their pets down, and it's never easy, despite the knowledge that it will end your pet's suffering and is the right thing to do.

I'm very sorry to hear about your pet "Lady". I know it is difficult, only time will heal. Remember the wonderful memories of Lady. I, too, have had to put down some pets...very difficult...as they become such a part of our lives. Take care...

I'm sorry * frown * We had to put 'Tip', our cat to sleep. She was 21 and therefore ancient - she also had kidney disease.

I've never had a pet of my own. We had family pets when I was a kid. By the time they had to be put down, I had moved out.

A guy who used to live next to me shot 2 kittens that was actually strays but I did feed them so they was kind of mine. One died under my house the other I had to take to have put down. * angry *
Long story but I almost had to have my cat put down but the emergence vet said I should wait to see if she got better. She did!!
Sorry about Lady, I know that was very painful for you and your family. * frown *

Yes I have put pets 'to sleep.' I can't afford to pay vets to off my pets so I usually do it myself and use a revolver after a last meal and a lot of petting. Doing it yourself does not make it any easier but is does make it less expensive, and I contest, more judicious in application and a more hallowed experience over all. It still sucks though. Sorry for your loss.

Yes, our golden retriever hemorrhaged after she gave birth to her puppy's, so we put her to sleep. She was aware of what was happening around her and just before she got her injection, we placed her four puppies around her face so that they would be the last things she saw before she died. Even as she was dying, she was licking them.

Very sorry about "Lady", and understand the difficulty you and your family are going through. Once when I was much younger, my dog had to be put to sleep, after a massive stroke. He just could not go on. My next dog died during a seizure as I was driving him to an emergency vet on a dark Sunday night. I was very upset, but he had had fifteen good years. In April this year my present dog, Sally, underwent a major operation for a mast cell tumour. She was in a lot of pain immediately after the operation. Fortunately, she pulled through and so far has recovered well and is back to normal.
