There's 14 pounds in a stone and 16 ounces in a pound.

I've had to grit my teeth through more than a few US TV imports (including The Simpsons) where one of the characters makes a reference to how we have the metric system over here.

In shops, because of our membership to the EU all products have to be labeled in kilograms, litres, etc. On the other hand, all road signs give distance in miles, all speed limits are in mph. The vast majority of people think of their height in feet and inches and their weight and stones and pounds.

I do wonder why you guys never adopted the 'stone'. It's an obvious measurement to use. No one ever says, "I'm 70 inches tall". You measure the distance or weight of something by using the largest unit and then expressing the remainder in the next largest.
ROCKMAN
(reply to icurok) posted 14-Jun-2006 10:11am

At one time they ws talk about going to the metric system over here but it didn't ever happen. Now as long as I've been using this system it seems like it would be hard for me to cnvert over to the metric system.
So at 172lbs. I'd be 12 stones 4lbs. right?*smile*

my heaviest was 245lbs. I am 5'9" so i am not going to ever be a tiny thing. but dang I only have 20 lbs left to reach my goal and I am looking good. My goal is to be pure muscle going into my 30's and then all i have to do is work to maintain it for the rest of my life. I don't want to be a stick.. i want tone. I have dropped from a size 20 a year and a half ago down to a size 11/12. Back when i was a swimmer and people thought i was anorexic i was a 9/10. but there is a huge difference between being 9/10 and lean because you swim 8 hrs a day, and being tone because you work out about two hours a day doing cardio and toning. I think I look better now then i have..ever....I have three more years to reach my goal.. but hoping to be there in another year...its a vicious cycle though because when toning, the scale goes up and down all the time...i listen to my clothes and how they fit and drop in size...not the scale.

195 lbs. At least, that's the heaviest I've ever weighed myself. I don't own bathroom scales, but I have a habit of using ones that I encounter, if possible I'll strip right down first. Otherwise I figure about 5 lbs. for clothing and shoes.

My weight has fluctuated quite dramatically over the years. I can remember:

Age 5........50 lbs.
Age 13....100 lbs.
Age 18....135 lbs.
Age 20....105 lbs.
Age 34....195 lbs.
Age 38....175 lbs.

If you search Body Mass Index on the internet, you can find sites that work it out for you - they take your height and weight and chuck out a number that then fits on a scale of underweight, through normal to overweight and obese.

It HAS happened in certain industries. Most state highway projects are designed and built in metric. It's a pain for me since I have to convert everything back to Imperial to relate to cost. Like square meters to square yards, etc. Well, at least there's no metric equivilent for "each".
