Yes, if he wants long hair, why not? He might want it cut when people call him a 'little girl'...or not. |
| Amanda |
I'm totally not sure about this. Caleb's wanting to grow his hair out, but I'm not sure if I'm going to let him or not. |
Enheduanna |
Sure. I see no harm in it. |
southernyankee |
Long hair is out of fashion. This isn't the hippie days or the 1980's. Even women don't like dealing with super long hair. Though the Mormons don't like it when they cut their hair. There was a man named Joephf Smith, dum dum dum dum dum.
I would say it depends on HOW long, plus other factors, like if he gets picked on at school because of it. If he's doing it because he joined some religious cult, then I'd definatly be worried. |

1) Young boys(and even some my age) look like girls with long hair
2) I don't think any guy should be allowed to have hair that goes past his shoulders..unless you are one of the few guys that can pull it off.. |

LindaH |
BIG hair is an 80's thing, and so are the spiky bits and guys using styling gels to make it all wild. Plain ole long hair is a 'never goes out of style' thing, like jeans. |
Iseult |
Depends on the quality of his hair.
I mean, so many guys have a long hair, and don't get me wrong, I love long hair on guys, but not all of them should. If he had good quality hair that looks nice long, I'd let him. |

No, and for good reason. 7 year olds are too young to make decisions that will impact their social lives. It is more important for a young child to fit in and be accepted by the group. If the majority trend were long hair I would say yes.
I't bad enough when parents don't put any effort into what their young children wear. A 7 year old boy with long hair and unique clothes is being set up to fail socially. |

We shouldn't discriminate against people because of their gender. That's called sexism. |
| w_wanderers | | (reply to ausfox) posted 26-Jun-2006 1:48am |
> What's ridiculous about short hair on a woman?
The Bible says short hair for males and long for females. Define "long hair"? Some say shoulder length is "short" because Jesus had it like that and traditional women had very very long hair. Like many things in the Bible it can be taken out of historical and cultural context. So it's only fair to say that if people think long hair for males is ridiculous, then they must say the same about short hair on women, lest they be a hypocrit. |
| w_wanderers |

Maybe if we taught children to make their own decisions and respect differences, rather than being fashion zombies, then there wouldn't be so much prejudice in the world. |
| LuridHope |
I'm far from mainstream w wanders, my opinion is based on experience.
I got an earing when I was 12 and it wasn't 'cool' till I was 16. Up untill that point people just made fun fun of me for it, I had long hair too! People really do mistake you for a girl when you are a young boy with long hair.
Don't get into a conflict of words with me. |

How are we to know what Jesus' hair was like? From what I've heard he wouldn't have been a blonde, blue-eyed, fair skinned man. |
| w_wanderers | | (reply to LuridHope) posted 27-Jun-2006 6:29am |
Well LuridHope I really don't know what to say. You're not the type of person I thought you were. So I don't see how a conflict could start. A boy that hadn't started puberty would get mistaken for a girl but there's really nothing one can do about it if they want to be nonconformist. |
| w_wanderers | | (reply to LuridHope) posted 27-Jun-2006 6:43am |
Calm down, you're jumping to conclusions.
1 Corinthians 11:14-15 Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him? But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.
I'm sorry if I offended you. I was merely presenting the Christian perspective and offering a comment for those that believe the Bible is infallible. That comment is merely, "What measurement defines long hair?" |
| w_wanderers | | (reply to llamamama) posted 27-Jun-2006 6:54am |
But when you say guys shouldn't have long hair because they are guys. Is this not gender discrimination? |
| w_wanderers | | (reply to RGirl) posted 27-Jun-2006 6:57am |

| docgbrown |
Actually it’s more pragmatic and traditional. My haircut, my two son's hair cuts are the same style of my father's, his father's and his father’s haircut. My father, though skilled with barber shears, did not stop going a barber until his wife (my mother) learned to cut our hair the way he likes his own hair cut. It made sense financially and added a paternal tradition that served to strengthen familiar bonds. My wife and I are working towards this same goal.
As to the cut regarding perceived discrepancy from being a Libertarian; Libertarians are strongly in support of the military. Like my father and his father (but not beyond), I am in the military and I expect my sons to find some way to support, defend or lead our country in some way if they want any inheritance from us. Freedom isn't free. I wish all would find a way, be it in the military service, volunteerism or by working in civil service or politics, to ensure freedom in their time. Although I do not agree with all of the Libertarian ideals, I see no hypocrisy or separation from the planks of Libertarian party on this issue. |
| llamamama |
I didn't say that..
I just wouldn't let my 7 year old grow his hair long. |
| w_wanderers | | (reply to docgbrown) posted 28-Jun-2006 9:12pm |
Libertarians support the military? Does that mean compulsory or voluntary service?
Family traditions are okay, as long as they're not being forced on anyone against their will, I see nothing wrong with it.
"Freedom isn't free. I wish all would find a way, be it in the military service, volunteerism or by working in civil service or politics, to ensure freedom in their time."

"I don't think any guy should be allowed to have hair that goes past his shoulders"
You said you don't think it should be allowed. But you said it's fine for those that can pull it off. I think those that can't, should still be allowed, it's just their problem to put up with all the crap they take for it. |

So let's review: You said, "I don't think any guy should be allowed to have hair that goes past his shoulders..unless you are one of the few guys that can pull it off..". Then you say, "I didn't say they couldn't. Frankly I'm not going to stop them."..And later say, "I just wouldn't let my 7 year old grow his hair long".
So basically it's okay for guys to have long hair if they can pull it off and if they are not your son? And even though you think it looks weird, you're not going to try and stop them?
So can I assume that it's not okay for your son because he can't pull it off like these other guys can or is it because he would embarass you? |

| w_wanderers | | (reply to llamamama) posted 2-Jul-2006 3:12am |
But that contradicts saying "one of the few guys". Who cares, I get your point anyway. Okay so basically you think no guy should be allowed to because none of them can pull it off because they all look weird. But you're not going to try to stop them because you can't be bothered? So in a nutshell you think people shouldn't be allowed to do stuff if they look weird but you wouldn't personally try to stop them? |

When I was 7 yrs old, I wanted long hair very much. I didn:t tell my folks as I knew they wouldn't let me. Because that desire was not fulfilled, I wanted long hair more & more. Finally when I was 30 yrs old, I started to let my hair grow, but it never gets long enough to suit me. People know I have long hair but they keep asking how long it is as i keep it up most of the time. So now if I could have my wish of having floor length hair, No one would know , as I love doing all kinds of hairdos that would not reveal the length. If I could have had long hair when I was a child, my desire then may have been satisfied so I would not have needed long hair now. But if a boy wants long hair, they should be taught how to take care of it & keep it put up to look nice & then they would not be teased so much. |
| survey22 | | (reply to hypersky) posted 11-Jul-2006 2:40pm |
I am a fellow, & I wish desperately that I had long hair down below the knees. I wouldn't care how much teasing i got as the sheer pleasure of it would be worth it. Really, I think anyone who teases someone with hair that long, is only jealous that they dont have hair that long. I did have extensions sewn in several times that were knee length, so I know I love it. |

I was kind of joking. The last time I had long hair, I was 12 and I looked like and androgynous Farrah Fawcett. I'm partial to short hair myself, if only for the low maintenance it requires. I like to step out of the shower and walk outside without having to even think about combing and blow drying. I watch my daughters go in the morning and trust me, I don't have the patience to spend all that time taking care of my hair. If you want long hair, be my guest, but I'll stick with my short hair. |
