Yes. These are grown men (sometimes women) who know the risks they are taking. There's risks of injury in all sports. Given the risk is greater in boxing. But, that shouldn't have anything to do with it being acceptable or not. |

Yes. I don't like it, but oh well. |

"Acceptable" can mean different things to a great many people, so I think the question is not bulletproof.
Having said that, I personally don't like the idea of two individuals beating each other up until one calls it quits or is knocked out. Speaking of "acceptable" sports, what about darts, competitive eating and chess, all of which are considered "sports?" |

Well yes I sure do. I love boxing, I love using the heavy bag and the fast bag. I think if people want to box you let them. Why would you want to stop it? Most people who box don't get to the brain damage level. I love watching boxing too.
Now UFC... that I don't like (lol) |

It's a martial art. Nobody kicks up as much of a fuss about Judo, Muay Thai or Capoeira.
There's also a large distinction between professional boxing and amateur boxing (the kind seen at the Olympics). Amateur boxing places a much higher emphasis on technical point scoring and penalises dangerous head blows.
Boxing is also a relatively safe sport in terms of fatalities. College football is more dangerous than boxing. Horse Racing is lethal compared to boxing.
There is a valid concern that, while not causing many fatalities, it can often lead to permanent brain damage. However, many other sports when played professionally over a number of years can lead to degenerative physical conditions such as osteoarthritis. |

If two people want to fight each other in the street, should they be allowed to do that too?
It's not that I'm against boxing, I just think "Because you want to" is not a reasonable test for acceptability. |

Zang | | posted 19-May-2006 4:18pm |
I think you would be hard-pressed to come up with a sport that doesn't involve some risk of injury. We live in enough of a nanny state; we don't need to protect athletes from the sports they engage in. |

I wouldn't consider any of those things to be "sports". Darts and chess are games. Competitive eating is just a silly contest, like a dance marathon.

| hypersky | | (reply to Zang) posted 19-May-2006 9:26pm |
I hear you, but they are promoted as sports by their various leagues and by media. I guess darts could count though, seeing as there's beer and the tossing of sharp, pointy things involved. I guess you have to be a real athlete to muster up the hand-eye coordination while combating the effects of alcohol. |

I'd like to say that everybody should have a choice in what they do, therefore boxing should be legal. However, I find the "sport" barbaric, animalistic and inappropriate. Beat each other until someone passes out. Great! What would the alien beings think of us humans?? |

| cabinfever | | posted 28-May-2006 1:11am |
Sure, why not? Hockey is acceptable, and they use semi-padded gloves in boxing. As for the damage, the people who engage in this sport should be aware of this beforehand, so if they want to have someone beat them into a vegetative state, then more power to them. I just hope they don't add to the gene pool before that happens. |

That is a funny thought! Then I guess playing pool is a sport too, since beer is often involved there too. See my survey:

I love pool, but it's a game to me. Even though there's fine motor skill involved, I don't see it as a sport. |

When I was in college we played a game we made up called Beer Ping Pong. It can be played by 1 to as many as you like. You put your big cup of beer on the table. If some one else gets the ping pong ball into your cup you drink it. Of course, people drank even when it didn't happen. They'd get drunk enough to say 'Close enough' and chug it down. |

I think boxing is stupid and barbaric - but if some idiots want to get in a ring and permenantly damage eachother, that's up to them I guess. |
| Biggles | | posted 12-Jun-2006 11:34pm |
There are different kinds of boxing. I'm not sure I agree with the matches that involve knockouts or hurting your opponent so badly that they can't stand anymore. Boxing for points seems ok. |

When my sons were in their teens, we had a local boys club. They offerred boxing...my husband thought it would be great to have the boys go into boxing. The boys wanted to try it. I had a fit. They fought a few matches, and won....but I refused to go to any matches. They did not stay in boxing long, thank goodness...they decided to go into other saner sports, like baseball, football. I guess my husband's father was a boxer when he was young, and my husband delighted in the thought of my boys going into boxing....no way. Once my sons had a little boxing match in their room, which happened very seldom, but never the less they were fighting in their room, I asked them to stop, they kept going at it.... . I yelled for my husband to come and stop them, he came to the bedroom door, asked him to step in and stop them...he said "oh boys will be boys". He walked away...I was furious. So I bodily got in between them, both of them being much taller than me, and they stopped. I always wanted to teach them to learn to talk things over instead of using their fists...patience is a virtue. |

Boxing is a great sport. In the Olympics, it's based on a different type of point system. In the big money world, it gets barbaric.

Yes, most definetly. Mentally, it takes more to compete in non-team sports because the outcome is entirely up to you. No one to back you up, no one to pick up the slack, no one to help. There's no reliever to take your place when you're having an "off " night. There's no sitting out this round of play. And no one to blame if you lose. But the prize of World Champion is more elite. There are a lot of team sport players that have World Champion rings that didn't contribute nothing on the road to getting there, or even competed in the championship competition. But are considered just as much "champion" as the all-stars that truly made it happen. |
