| they | (reply to cloudhugger) posted 16-Apr-2006 4:36pm I have 4.... Do yours go outside? What's your litter situation? I have two boxes (too few, I know.. but space won't allow for more).... I really only have to scoop every other day even then... My cats are indoors.. but I've been considering building an outdoor cat enclosure. I had one a few years ago that was connected to the house via a kitty door.... they came and went as they pleased....
I'd have to scan a pic of the one I had before... but here's a link for some really cool ones that I used as examples when I drew up my plans for the new one... http://www.just4cats.com/page7.html |
| cloudhugger | (reply to they) posted 16-Apr-2006 4:56pm Two of my boys can go out. They stay pretty close, I had a talk with them and explained the dangers of the great outside. My orange is not a bright boy so he has to stay in. Rosie is Mary's baby and she is the ultimate bedroom kitty. Look, but you can only touch her when she wants you to. The baby is 9 months old, and sweet. she will bolt out the door, freak out and run back in. Just as well, I don't like it when my kitties are out, but they got to do what they got to do.
One litter box in the bedroom. And in the laundry room there are 3 boxes. They share pretty nice, but they do have their favorites. All 3 are next to each other next to the bck door, with the one on the end underneath a stool so I have shelf space on top. They will pee in one, then poop in another. It's pretty funny. I tangled with the idea of having double decker cat boxes, but I figured they would be pretty messy dragging litter all over the house. I put litter trays under them so their little feet don't drag it all through the house. I considered the kitty door with an enclosure, but with the number of coyotes around, it would be too much like bait. It's always an adventure coming and going through the front door watching for bolting kitties. |
| RGirl | (reply to they) posted 16-Apr-2006 5:31pm That first one is an awesome enclosure! I never even thought of doing that. I had a cat that I walked on a leash. |
| RGirl | (reply to cloudhugger) posted 16-Apr-2006 5:32pm I heard that 90% of orange tabbies are male. Have you ever heard that? |
| cloudhugger | (reply to RGirl) posted 16-Apr-2006 7:41pm I may have. That would be a fun statistic to persue. |
| cloudhugger | (reply to they) posted 16-Apr-2006 7:51pm I clicked the link...oooh, got my head going. I would really like to be out there with them, and maybe mosquito netting inside the chicken wire because they love me being out with them, and the skeeters are rough out here. |

> never even thought of doing that. I had a > cat that I walked on a leash. They and I have talked about cat enclosures before. We have an enclosure with a cat door in a ground level basement window. They love it. They just haven't figured out yet that they can use the facilities outside. They come in, go to the litter box, and go back outside. Two cats, Merlyn and Simon Patrick, have always had a harness and lead so that they could play in the yard. We had one dog in the back yard that thought the cats were lunch and this was the only way to keep them safe at the time. When we moved into this house, we had the enclosure built for them. Merlyn still likes to be taken for a walk around the neighborhood on his leash. |

We have 3 cats. One large litter box. Special food for indoor cats that reduces the poop production and smell thereof. We enclosed the space beneath the basement stairs and cut a hole in the hallway wall on one side and put a door on the other. The little box is in there with a ionizer. I scoop twice a day and sprinkle baking soda to help with the smell. Once a week I empty litter, scrub the box, put fresh litter, vacuum inside the space to get all the gravel out and mop twice (once with hot water and bleach, and then with hot water and lysol). It still stinks! What am I doing wrong? |

| they | (reply to iamdonte) posted 17-Apr-2006 12:13pm What kind of litter are you using? I use Tidy Cats small spaces and if I scoop every other day with two boxes, it never smells...... and it's in a closet in the main hallway of my house across from the kitchen... so it's very important to me that I NOT smell it. Also, my sense of smell is very strong. |

| they | (reply to iamdonte) posted 18-Apr-2006 3:08am Someone else said in this thread that their cat uses one for poop and one for pee... Mine do the same thing... Maybe that helps? |
| iamdonte | (reply to they) posted 18-Apr-2006 11:46am That might be it....mine use the center for poop and the corners for pee. |
| RGirl | (reply to they) posted 18-Apr-2006 3:52pm When I had two cats and one litter box one of them started pooping around the house. I asked my vet and she said you should have 1 extra box than the number of cats you have. If you have 1 cat, 2 boxes. 2 cats, 3 boxes. She said to get at one more box because cats often prefer to go #1 in one box and #2 in the other. Cats are weird. |
