| Halifax | posted 10-Apr-2006 10:10pm Vase, Creek, Roof, Wash. I live in Utah so this is a huge problem. Never heard of so many cricks and ruffs. I hate that. I'm actually not sure how to pronounce route. |
| hypersky | posted 10-Apr-2006 10:23pm Vase, Creek, Roof, Wash and Roote. Noo-Klee-er (Nuclear), not New Killer (like Dubya says it) |

| SueBee | posted 10-Apr-2006 11:30pm A couple of them depend on the sentence, I guess. Roof and route I don't always pronounce the same. |

| they | posted 11-Apr-2006 12:47am too bad you didn't have Aunt (ant) and AHHHnt ... but very cool survey |
| Liss | posted 11-Apr-2006 1:31am I say 'vahz', roof, and 'roote'. Neither of the washes are how I say it - wosh. |
| cloudhugger | posted 11-Apr-2006 1:34am It depends on the context of the sentence. It's vase, but it may be vahz if it will sound better in the sentence. It's usually crick, but if it's a creek, than it's a creek. I used to say warsh because no one else did, but now I just say plain old wash. And if it is for directions, I say route. If it is a street, it's called a roote. |
| RGirl | posted 11-Apr-2006 2:42am I've noticed that I will say Route 66 as Root 66, but then when I say 'What route will you be taking?' It's route, not root. |

| CGTREE | posted 12-Apr-2006 11:07pm Interesting....But I think Creek and Crick are totally different things...a Creek to me is a small streem of water. And a Crick is a noise made when walking on an old floor......I've never even heard of "Warsh" |
| CGTREE | (reply to Shadow_Matt) posted 12-Apr-2006 11:08pm Umm...no....a crick is a noise and a creek is a stream of water... |
| CGTREE | (reply to iamdonte) posted 12-Apr-2006 11:09pm It drives me INSANE!!!! when people say idear!!! Clearly it does not have an "R" at the end!!!!! GEES!!! |
| RGirl | (reply to CGTREE) posted 13-Apr-2006 1:12am Trust me, in the US and I know because I have experienced some of them in Misourri that say 'crick' and are talking about what we know as 'creek'. And there is a LOT of 'warshing' going on around here too. |
| iamdonte | (reply to CGTREE) posted 13-Apr-2006 8:50am It sounds so foreign...I would have to really work at it to say idear...I don't think that people realize that it makes them look dumb when they say it. |

| CGTREE | (reply to iamdonte) posted 16-Apr-2006 5:06pm Yeah it does make people seem dumb....this old lady in my carving club says it a lot...I shiver ever time she says it...someday I'll ask her why she says it. |
| iamdonte | (reply to CGTREE) posted 16-Apr-2006 8:16pm More than likely her answer will be "That's the way I've always said it." |

| Oscar | posted 16-Jun-2006 2:39pm All of the above that were followed by the word 'or' |
| littlebritches | posted 8-Aug-2008 12:37pm I loved reading this. It all depends on where you are from. Many in SD, MN & WY say crick while I say creek. In Eastern SD it is ruff not roof, in Eastern SD and Western MN it is warsh not wash. But my personal all time favorite was beg instead of bag - that one always threw me for a loop. It all depends on where one is from and where one is raised. The same can be said for which meal of the day is dinner - for some it is lunch for others it is supper. I got so confused as a kid being raised by a mom from CA in eastern SD that I no longer eat dinner - ever - only lunch and supper. |
