Should California raise the speed limit of semi trucks?

The current speed limit for trucks in California is 55 miles per hour, the cars get to travel 70+ miles per hour, The California Highway Patrol complained to the Governor to raise it to keep up with traffic flow, he declined, what is your opinion?

I don't know, I don't live there to make a valued judgement on the situation. If you were to say out west where the roads are quite open, I say let 'em do 90. But in a city like St louis or Chicago, it might get a little hairy for the rest of the traffic the trucks share the road with. And I do emphasize 'share'.

What do you think Longhaul?

I DO NOT think the limit should be raised. Speed kills, and big trucks could lose control easier. I was in an accident once with a semi, double tank truck once...because she was going too fast. NO keep it at 55!

maybe, what is the rationale for keeping them at 55? is there not a "slow" lane for these trucks?

Yes. It should be just as much as the rest of traffic.

Yes they should raise the speed limit.

Let me guess: longhaultrucker created this survey...

Differences in speed are dangerous. Laws that require or encourage such speed differences then create unsafe conditions on the highway. The dim-bulb who thought it up should be personally liable for the death and destruction caused.

Yes. Although the trucks on I-5 go faster than 55 mph.

No. Semi trucks are scary & blow my little car off the road & blind me when they spray muddy rain water all over my windshield. I just hold on and pray. Gosh, when I had a Festiva it was REALLY bad.

Yes at least to 65 mph. I think the trucks here go whatever the posted speed limit is for cars.

I think I am only going to say maybe... swaying to yes, seeing how even the police ( chips! *lol) are reccommending it.. but only up it a bit more, maybe to 65 perhaps..you know better then me.. do you think they should? My brother and father are long haulers, they drive to Calgary then down through Texas mostly. I'm sure they share your pain.. * smile * They are hardly ever home. * frown * Keep on Truckin. I say yes. It's a pain in the ass with the big rigs going so much slower than the cars. Causes too much interruption to the flow.
Consider too, no one goes the 70 mph limit. Average is 75-85 generally. Throw in trucks doing 60 and you can see the problem.

Yes, I think so. It seems dangerous for them to be going that much slower than other traffic. Here, on interstates, it's 65 for semis and 70 for other vehicles. That seems reasonable.

Maybe raise it to 65 or so...a slow truck is just as dangerous as a fast one.

On my trip to Florida I dont think I ever saw a big rig going the speed limit anyway! On I75 the speed limit is 70, but if you go 70 mph the rigs climb up your ass so your kind of forced to go 80, go with the flow.

There's a speed limit for a reason

A lot of trucks with sleepers are over the road trucks that get paid by the mile, so when their forced to go the speed limit, we lose money, one reason why you did not see them going the speed limit * wink * especially in Florida

Yes. The speed limit should be the same for all vehicles. No sense in forcing a car behind a truck to have to go truck speed.

YES THEY DO NEED TO RAISE IT. FOR THOSE WHO SAY NO YOU SHOULD DO THIS.....GET ON I-15 OR I-40 OR I -80...WHEREVER THE SPEED LIMIT IS 70 MPH AND DO THIS....SET YOUR CRUISE AT 55 MPH IN YOUR CAR AND SEE HOW FAST OTHER CARS PASS YOU. TRUCK DRIVERS FOR THE MOST PART ARE PROFESSIONAL DRIVERS...MABY NOT ALL ARE PERFECT AND THERE ARE A FEW STUPID ONES OUT THERE. BUT IT IS DANGEROUS TO MIX SPEED ESPECIALLY WITH A 15 MPH DIFERENCE. THE AVERAGE SPEED THAT PEOPLE DO OUT IN THE RUAL AREAS IN CALIFORNIA IS 80 MPH. THAT IS 10 MPH OVER THE 70 MPH LAW...SO IF MOST CARS ARE GOING 80 AND A TRUCK IS GOING 55 OR 58 (WHICH MOST DO BECAUSE OF THE OUTRAGEOUS RATES A TRAFFIC FINE WILL GIVE IN A TRUCK) THAT IS DANGEROUS. CALIFORNIA NEEDS TO DO WHAT NEVADA, ARIZONA, COLORADO,NEW MEXICO, UTAH, AND WYOMING DO....SET IT AT 75 FOR BOTH AND THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC JUST GOES AND THERE IS LESS LANE CHANGING FOR CARS TO PASS TRUCKS. AND ON TWO LANE ROADS IT IS EVEN MORE DANGEROUS...THE SING SAYS: AUTOS WITH TRAILERS...TRUCKS...55 MAXIMUM. BUT THE SPEED FOR EVERYONE ELSE IS 65. IF YOU ARE DRIVING ON A TWO LANE ROAD AND YOU COME UP ON A TRUCK DOING 55....WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO? YES THATS RIGHT TRY AND PASS...THIS IS WHERE THE ACCIDENTS HAPPEN...I HAVE SEEN THIS TWICE IN 8 MONTHS BECAUSE SOME DUMB butt-hole DRIVING A CAR TRIED TO PASS A TRUCK THAT WAS GOING 57 MPH AND WHEN THE CAR GETS IN THE OTHER LANE...THE CAR TRAVELING AT 75++ COMMING THE OTHER WAY HITS AND CREATES A HORRIBLE ACCIDENT.....RAISE THE FUDGING SPEED LIMIT. AND A WORD OF ADVISE TO PEOPLE IN A ACCIDENT WITH A TRUCK.....HOW CLOSE WERE YOU? DID YOU TRY TO PASS ON THE RIGHT? DID YOU FLASH YOUR LIGHTS BEFORE PASSING A TRUCK...THAT WILL GET THE TRUCKS ATTENTION SO THAT HE OR SHE SEE'S YOU. MOST ....MOST NOT ALL ACCIDENTS ARE BECAUSE YOU ARE FOLLOWING TO CLOSE OR YOUR NOT PAYING ATTENTION TO YOUR DRIVING.
