| Zang | posted 29-Mar-2006 9:41pm I tend to picture a short chubby woman with a crew cut and no make up wearing a plaid flannel shirt over a white tank top and jeans. Basically, the sort of gals I used to see at the Dufferin back in the eighties. Women that look like PE teachers. |
| romkey | posted 29-Mar-2006 9:56pm Dykes on bikes. |
| cabinfever | posted 29-Mar-2006 10:12pm What comes to mind is a heavyset, short-haired, square-jawed woman that you have a very hard time telling what the sex is. |
| cabinfever | (reply to RGirl) posted 29-Mar-2006 10:13pm Did you ever see that comedienne who did her whole bit on the fact that she is a dyke? I saw her once on Comedy Central three years ago, and she was hysterical. |
| darkshadowsseeker | posted 29-Mar-2006 11:22pm I haven't heard the word in years, but the way I've heard it used means "lesbian". |

| cloudhugger | (reply to RGirl) posted 29-Mar-2006 11:31pm Shall I tell my story, or should I wait a bit? |
| hypersky | posted 29-Mar-2006 11:47pm one of two things: Either a disparaging remark or a term meant to be funny when uttered among friends. Depends on who is saying it and of whom the term "dyke" is being said. |

| RGirl | (reply to cloudhugger) posted 30-Mar-2006 12:19am Tell your story. |
| RGirl | posted 30-Mar-2006 12:32am When I hear the word dyke a lot of things happen at once. Immediately I think of a masculine appearing & behaving lesbian. Very short hair, wallet, jeans, man's watch. Walks with a bit of a strut. Has slightly aggressive body language, like they are looking for a fight. Back when I lived in real society & not this stupid little hamlet when I would go out this is the type of lesbian is who approached me most often, but I just don't find it attractive.
Other than that I see it as a general term that lesbians use amongst themselves as a joke, like, 'What do you expect from a dyke?' and people laugh. I don't see myself as a dyke. I don't like the word lesbian. I think of braless, sandal wearing hippies (oo, could be new survey, maybe I'll do jerk too?) I just say I like girls. To make it easy for some people I say 'I'm gay.' My girlfriend casually calls herself a dyke but she is far from what I imagine a dyke being, in appearance. Now attitude I think she has a bit dyke attitude sometimes. Like doing the money and other responsibilities that make her feel right within herself and I'm lazy enough to let her go with it. And a sort protective attitude which I find charming. Anyway, she doesn't dress like that at all, but she is a very confident & responsible person. |

| cloudhugger | posted 30-Mar-2006 7:52pm When I was working at the nuclear plant, a few years back, we were in an outage. Which meant many contractors were on sight working with us. My job, on midnights, was manning(sic) the tool room with my lesbian friend. It was about 4 am and we were loopy anyway, but here comes 4 large hairy sober looking pipefitters to the window to ask for tools. We stood there staring at each other when the guy blurts out, "Hey, you got a pair of dykes in there?" My friend and I stared at him and then looked at each other and than we ran to the back of the toolroom busting a gut laughing. Dykes, or dikes (?) is a slang term for linemans pliers. We knew that, but OMG it was hilarious. I was literally on my knees holding my sides in from laughing so hard. We scurried over to the bins and each grabbed one of each size and went back to the window, and there they were, just as we left them with these sober looking faces, which made it even funnier because they didn't realize what was happening. We still laugh about that one. I think my lesbian friend and I sort of looked like dykes at the time, too. |

| cabinfever | (reply to ultamate) posted 31-Mar-2006 12:32am No, this woman was not in drag... she was a short-haired blond, rather heavily-built, and wore jeans and a flannel sleeveless shirt. She poked fun at herself and at stereotypes of dykes. She had a very droll way of putting things.... "I was driving to work the other day.... in my truck..." (Rolled eyes) Damn, I know that wasn't funny... you'd just have to see her, it was her delivery as well as what she said. |
