The best I've seen is either Luhrmann's Romeo and Juliet or Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. I've seen all the Harry Potter movies so far, but that one stuck closest to the book.

The Orchid Thief, which was made into the movie Adaptation.
The Last Temptation of Christ is also excellent; it's my favorite movie. But I didn't like the book nearly as much as the movie, so I'm not sure how I'd vote for it as an adapted screenplay. It departs from the book in a lot of major ways, although I think they're good ways.

Amistad is really an eccelent adaptation from the book. One of the best I've seen.

Most Shakespeare plays tranlate very well to screen.

I thought The Dead Zone (yes the movie, not the tv show I haven't seen it) was a great adaptation of the Stephen King novel. Usually I don't enjoy movies based on his books but I heard David Cronenberg made King mad by not accepting his input. I don't know if that's true or not but it may be why I liked it so much. That's the one that came springing to mind anyway.

I don't really keep track if a movie I've watched is adapted from a book. I really don't care if it is or not.

I don't really know. I haven't read all that many books that have been turned into a movie, or vice versa.

The one I am most familiar with is the Harry Potter series, however, I have so many problems with what they did with movie version.

I watch a movie because I want to see it. I don't really care if it's an adapted screenplay or something made up completely by someone.
