Ever since I can remember, I've used the time before falling asleep to make up stories. Mostly fantasy/adventure, with increasingly sophisticated plot lines as I aged. I'm now thinking I should mine 30 years worth of stories and start writing novels. Look for them wherever Harlequins are sold!

I usually fall asleep to the sound of my SO's voice reading out loud to me....or just chatting about various things. It is so soothing.....I have no time to worry or replay or plan or anything because I am fully embracing her voice and drifting away.

Great survey! I've done most of these things at one time or another, but most of the time I think about all the things I have to be happy about. I suppose that sounds kind of cheesy, but it's true. Some nights I lie awake with a song I'm writing running though my head, but that hasn't happened for awhile. And some nights I fall asleep while reading.

My vote was your last choice for a very important reason. You see I am a lucid dreamer. And like one should plan ones activity for the day, the same applies for ones dream time otherwise its wasted..

I think about when I'm going to fall asleep and just where is the point between waking and sleeping. Usually, I end up staying up all night asking myself "Am I asleep yet?" * wink *

A few of these... I should qualify "images" 'cuz I don't do visual imagery, but I often do the equivalent for other sensory modes... hearing voices, for example, or the harder-to-describe sensory experience of "presence."

bluebird1974 - no offense taken! I just feel that it took me so long to learn all the little nuances to nettiquette that I like to pass them on if I think it'll help someone pick them up any quicker than I did.

I think about nothing at all if I actually want to achieve sleep. If I let one little thought about the future, even if it's something as mundane as an errand I have the next day, into the blissful void of my preslumberous mind, any hopes I have of getting a good night's sleep are blown.

I also have this really annoying habit of imagining, like, a stack of pancakes, and then I cut them in half and stack up the halves and then I cut that stack in half and stack up those halves and it keeps going and going and going. Those are the nights I usually can't sleep.

It depends on whether I need to get to sleep or if I'm in bed early. I try not to make plans because then I never get to sleep, but if I'm in bed early it's okay. If I'm desperate to get to sleep and I can't, then I list things starting with each letter of the alphabet (I think that's why I win at Scattergories) until I fall asleep. I hardly ever make it past H.
