Assuming you have one, what is your storage area like?

Neat, messy, or full? How do you handle all your "stuff" that you don't want to store inside your home?

This is an essay survey. Feel free to expound on your state of junk and clutter. And, how you deal with it, or don't!

I try to keep my possessions within reasonable limits. When I get too much clutter, I either throw stuff away or donate it to charity.

I don't have a storage area for such things. There is a storage shed on the property, but it's not used for household items, it's used for tools and gardening supplies.

It's neatly sorted in plastic storage bins. Every year, I force myself to re-evaluate what I must keep and what I don't really need, throwing out or giving away that which does not fit into my life anymore. Everything is more or less replaceable these days.

note: You'd be smart to scan your photos and either post them somewhere or keep a disc of them with someone you trust, if you haven't already. It's one less thing you need to worry about replacing in the event of a natural or unnatural disaster. Those are pretty much the only "things" that can't ever be replaced.

I have over a hundred milk crates filled with books, footwear, videos, and they are in stacks of 6. We also have very small closets in the house, but they mostly have clothing.

We move so much that a lot of junk ends up staying in boxes around different areas forever. We have plastic Frito Lays boxes full of stuff that needs to be sorted through. Some are in my room, some are in the den and some in the laundry room. The laundry room is a total mess right now because I was making a huge box house with my daughter and I got busy so it's sitting in there taking up space. I might clean the closet out in there and put it in the closet. Hey this survey motivated me to get it cleaned up! * grin * We just took the Christmas boxes out of the closet anyway. I'll put the box house stuff in and when we put Christmas boxes away, they can go under the desk in there... * grin * (they take up less space)

"Storage area"...hmmm. On the boat, we have a small store room downstairs. You must pass through the workshop area and go forward. We have a bunch of stuff stored there. Aft of the workshop area is the engine room.

In our house in Georgia, we don't have any type of storage area. We do have some stuff stored in plastic boxes in our basement. There are also 3 cars down there (soon to be 4 as my husband bought me a Jeep Wrangler for Christmas).

Oh, almost forgot. My husband has had a bunch of stuff in an actual storage locker in Old Saybrook, CT for the last 14 years. I have a few things there as well. I bet it's all rodent/weather damaged. Maybe we'll actually make it to CT this summer and clear it out.

scotty organizes and takes care of the crap in the garage and in the moldy spider infested nasty-ass storage shed behind the house. i haven't a clue as to what is out there, (besides the lawn mower of course), or what type of condition it is in.
the laundry room/back room we both take care of....it's kind of in a state of disarray.

I have 3; 2 in the apartment and one rented (that one is neat- everything is packed). One in the apartment is neat 'cause my freezer is in it as well as food and the other has the tools and could use a little of attention...

Well, back when I had the house, when we had trouble opening the car doors in the garage, something had to be done! There were big fir trees next door, and between having the car covered in fir needles and rearranging stuff, cleaning out the garage won.

Once I got things repacked, organized, or tossed, it was easier to stay neat. I was more selective about what I kept and how I kept it.

When you have to make a path getting what you need or can barely see the garden rake against the shed's back wall, it might be time to rearrange the overflow. Outside sheds can be especially vulnerable. I think the "out of sight out of mind" philosophy takes over. When we moved, I couldn't believe how much was stored outside.

I, personally, didn't need all that junk. I downsized from a house, basement, and garage to a 36' boat and 16 boxes. I feel lucky to be so unencumbered, but admit, I do miss some things I gave away or sold... but I couldn't move them and wouldn't pay for storage, so, as Alice says, "There 'ya go."

I have also found that garden tools spawn and will take over a whole corner!

Now I have all my boxes in my room. The stack in the corner is draped with a lace tablecloth we got in Spain and I use some as tables.

What I hated most about any storage area was the very real possibility of spiders. I loved your description.

I neither have nor do I need a storage area. My lifestyle is fairly minimalist and I don't have, nor do I want a lot of junk and clutter in my life or my apartment. I live in a tiny studio apartment, and by keeping my possessions to a minimum, I feel I have more room.

if i had to look at all of my crap all out in the open everyday, i would do what you did...drape them w/ cool fabrics and things. * grin *

you know, i don't really mind spiders....but over the summer, we found quite a few relatively large interestingly frightening spiders around the outside of the house and in/around that shed...seriously, just their bodies were the size of quarters!!!! ew...that is all i can say.
we should have taken photos of them, but i guess we were too hypnotized/mesmerized by their absolute weirdness to actually think about something else

I don't have one anymore. When I did have one, it was moderately neat but very packed-in, since it was mostly boxes and furniture piled in such a fashion that it would fit in the storage room. I almost never went and got anything out of it, so it pretty much stayed that way until I emptied it. It did get really dusty, though. I've also stored things in a basement, and they stayed moderately neat there, too, sitting in big plastic bins on shelves.

I am conflicted.

I'm a packrat who detests clutter.

Therefore, I save everything... but about once a year, I go through all of it and give to Goodwill..

I have several storage areas. There is a shed at the end of my driveway, an outdoor closet attached to the back of the house, an attic, and a a few closets that are used for storage. Everything is stored neatly.

We don't have a storage room per say, I use the back bedroom for storage area. There's a lot of crap in there (emphasis on crap) that I don't know what to do with so I keep it.
There's also a pantry in the kitchen that I use for storage. There's a pile of tools on the floor of it.
Needless to say, I don't let anyone open either of those doors.
I should clean it and organize it..
