No, I think this is a really silly notion. I'm severely myopic and have a degenerative eye condition, neither of which are caused by reading too much. Nearly everyone in my family is nearsighted so it's likely an inherited or genetic predispostion.

Wearing glasses show one thing... you can afford them.

no. I've known too many dumb people who happened to wear glasses to know thats not true.

No way. I know people who don't wear glasses that are very intelligent and people who do wear glasses who aren't exactly the sharpest tool in the shed.

No. Unless you're talking about people who should wear them and don't. Then the people who wear them are obviously more intelligent. It's pretty stupid not to wear glasses (or contacts) if you need them.

maybe I'm being totally wrong here but I think it wearing glasses means you have poorer eye sight?

No, it just means their eyesight is worse. It may even mean that their eyes are less intelligent than the eyes of those who don't need glasses. Hey, I wear glasses, take that back! (oh-oh! time for my medication again...)

I think that people who wear glasses have worse eyesight without them than those who don't... and have done something about it.

No, I don't think so. I just view them as either they can't be bothered with contact lenses or they are comfortable wearing glasses. I wear glasses the odd time and I don't think I have been judged as 'smarter' in any way. In fact, at the neighborhood convenience store, the female clerk once said I look way better without glasses. I took that as an literal insult. I picked the frames myself and they are rather trendy. *cool grin*

Okay, so... I wear glasses, and I'm more intelligent than, well, everybody, therefore... yes...?

...or severely need them. Or, can't afford contacts or corrective surgery. Or aren't vain enough to take the above mentioned methods. I actually look at it from the opposite perspective, glasses are more symbolic of the working class. *pusheshis frames back up on his nose*

i know...check it out. i was a resale shop many months ago, (this place is super cheap), and i found a really cool pair of glasses, the frames are excellent, and the lenses are non-perscription. so i got them to wear if i have to make a "smart" first impression...(proceed to place embarassed emoticon thingie here)

I just got my new glasses this week. I've had bi-focals for years, but with my "mid range" so bad, I now have tri-focals and absolutely LOVE them! Instantly added my new picture of me in red.
thevelvetcure
(reply to patarnone) posted 13-Oct-2005 2:53pm

I can't imagine having Bifocals, & keeping the images aligned correctly, though I suppose it's something that one would get used to with use. I'm guessing the adjustment time between bifocals & trifocals aren't that bad then.
bball52

no,because i wear glasses, and even though I'm a genius, doesn't mean everyone who wears glasses is.
patarnone
(reply to thevelvetcure) posted 13-Oct-2005 3:00pm

I adapted instantly! I had verilux lineless bifocals, but had to go with free welfare glasses this time, the ones with lines. I absolutely love them. My midrange was so bad, it was difficult to do computer stuff, now I see great everywhere!
thevelvetcure
(reply to patarnone) posted 13-Oct-2005 3:03pm

Perhaps that's what my grandfather ought to look into. He has glasses for the computer, but in order for them to work properly, he has to sit perfectly upright and at a specific distance away from the monitor, which is highly unlikely as he spends about 12 hrs at the computer in tech rooms.
patarnone
(reply to thevelvetcure) posted 13-Oct-2005 3:24pm

I have to adjust my head to view what I see correctly, but it's not a problem.

Ridiculous. I wear glasses and lenses, have done so since I was in grade 3... obviously it has nothing to do with your intelligence but just that you have poor eyesight of course! Yes, I have terrible vision and wear corrective lenses..& I'm as dumb as a plank.. *laughing out loud*

glasses always give the appearance of being smarter...although in some cases the person is not always brillant. I always like to debate whether or not intelligent women are intimidating to men...what does everyone think of that?
uptowngirl
(reply to ScubaScott) posted 14-Oct-2005 2:17pm

hey scubaScott,
poor eyesight means you read a lot thus causing your eyesight to go funky. Therefore, if you read a lot you are intelligent.

Not at all. A lot of people say to me when I'm wearing glasses - 'you must read a lot!'. Or, it could be that I have a lazy eye and the eye that has to compensate has gone slightly short sighted. Nothing to do with reading at all.

I don't, but I know others do, so on job interviews I wear a pair of vanity frames. *snicker* Interviewers are looking for smart people, and the stigma with glasses is still "bookworm", so why not use stereotypes in your favor whenever possible?

Well I have always wondered what people did before glasses had been invented you would think it would die out "Survival of the fittest" I mean if your blind from birth your chances of survival in the harsh Neanderthal Era is very unlikely unless you have adapted and really used your brain. So this theory says that most people with bad eyes probably have intelligent ancestors.

What does having bad eyesight have to do with being intelligent?
It's just a myth.
There's very smart people with glasses, but also very stupid ones.
