Everything sounds yummy except for the beets, cauliflower and broccoli. But I'll have seconds of everything else! * smile * What time is dinner? Should I bring anything?

Everything but the beets and the turkey. I only mention the turkey because I seldom, if ever, eat meat or poultry. My digestive tract doesn't handle them very well, but everything else sounds delicious.

You forgot the green bean casserole! And I'd use yams instead of spaghetti squash, and I'd leave off the last three things. And I'd include cranberry sauce.

Love spahetti squash, but I am not sure about it being sweet, never tried it like that, but I would be honored to try yours. Gotta pass on the cauliflower.
So how do you get jarred beets? Drop them a couple of times, or pound them against the counter???
And I will save the optional cheese sauce for my slice of apple pie.

Nope. I don't eat any birds. It's not that I don't like the taste. It's because when I was little, we had chickens and a turkey. They became like pets. So, now it's a mind thing with me. If I eat chicken or turkey, I feel like I'm eating my pet.

Ohhhhh ok....I totally understand....Last year or so I wanted to try duck meat...so my mother and I bought a duck from the grocery store and I put it in the oven......well my mother is a bit of a bird watcher...and she really likes watching ducks.....so she couldn't even carve the duck when it was ready....she started to cry as she was cutting it and she couldn't eat any of it......I felt bad for that......so I ate the duck....I just wanted to try something new.. I've never bought another one since though....and besides it tastes exactly like roast beef.

Sounds great to me, if a touch heavy on the veggies... and you are missing jelled cranberry sauce. But not everyone likes cranberry sauce. Any bread? I love those King's Hawaiian rolls... yummy! I've never had spaghetti squash, but I do love acorn and butternut. Is is similar in flavor, anyone know?

I have heard quite a few times about people eating cheese with apples or with apple pie, but I've never tried it... just doesn't sound right. But then, my hubby thinks I'm strange for eating peanut butter with my apples or peanut butter and banana sandwiches.
Amanda
(reply to cabinfever) posted 2-Nov-2005 10:33pm
I like peanut butter with apples. Now that I think of it, I remember my grandfather eating red rind cheese with apples. He also ate cottage cheese with peaches. Yuck!
cabinfever
(reply to Amanda) posted 2-Nov-2005 11:04pm
Hey, peaches are great with cottage cheese! I also use jelly with my biscuits and gravy, preferably grape. An old friend did the ol' "don't knock it 'til you try it" on me, and so I did, and I loved it... One of the other posters suggested the green bean casserole for the dinner, yuck there for me. Besides the fact that fried onions don't agree with me.
Amanda
(reply to cabinfever) posted 2-Nov-2005 11:11pm
I either do biscuits and jelly or biscuits and gravy. I've never had all three together. Just doesn't seem American to put jelly with biscuits and gravy! * wink * I can't eat cottage cheese unless it's cooked in something. The texture and smell bother me. I do like green bean casserole. Yummy! Makes me miss my mom just thinking about it. She always made it at Thanksgiving and Christmas and also at family cook-outs. Now, I'm the official green bean casserole maker, but somehow, it never taste quite like hers did.
cabinfever
(reply to Amanda) posted 2-Nov-2005 11:21pm
What's not American about it? Isn't that pretty much the basis for this whole country, to be able to try new things of our own volition? What I do is order b&g, then put bites of jelly with it as I want it. Putting the jelly on first and then putting the gravy over it makes the jelly melt and run.
Luckily for me, my family isn't big on the gb casserole. Whenever the fam gets together, it's usually BBQ, even in winter. Or we'll go out to Old Country Buffet. We don't have any family recipes to pass down. But from what I've heard when people say that it doesn't taste like mom's is that there's nothing wrong with the food, it's the fact that the loving person isn't making it anymore. Sounds like it's that way with you...
Amanda
(reply to cabinfever) posted 2-Nov-2005 11:28pm
Was just picking about it not being American. However, I live in the deep south. I'd probably get shot if someone saw me eating biscuits and gravy with jelly. You just don't screw with the biscuits and gravy. * grin * We usually do the BBQ thing, too, but grean bean casserole goes great with it, believe it or not. There's tons of recipes that have been passed down in my family. I've got some that were handwritten 4 and 5 generations ago. It's awesome to think about the history of it when cooking those. Yeah, everyone tells me my green bean casserole is great, but to me, it'll never be the same. There's lots of things my mother cooked that I cook now and they never taste quite right to me. You're probably right that it's just because she's not the one making it, pouring her love into it. Gosh, I miss her so much.
cabinfever
(reply to Amanda) posted 2-Nov-2005 11:43pm
You may be right about getting shot.... at least you aren't making grits out of a box, or adding jelly to those. You could try b&g w/jelly in your own home * wink * ... I won't tell, and it's quite addicting. My sister does have a very old small notebook with a few recipes in it that was our great-grandmother's, but she keeps it sealed away so that it won't deteriorate further, and I don't know what's in it. I only remember some of the measurements being "handful" of this or "two pinches" of that. I'm sorry you miss your mom. The only thing I could think of regarding the casserole is maybe changing the recipe slightly, like adding garlic salt or something, to make it your 'own', but it would still also be your mom's, because she taught you how to make it originally.
Amanda
(reply to cabinfever) posted 3-Nov-2005 5:59pm
My mom was an awesome cook. She rarely, if ever, used recipes. She kept it all in her head. When we realized she wasn't going to make it, she told me a lot of her recipes, so I could write them down. Everyone in the family has a favorite that my mom made. The last two years, on the anniversary of her death, I make everyone's favorite and we all eat dinner together. We sit around the table, eating our favorite "mom" food, telling stories, laughing, and crying. It's our little yearly memorial. We're planning it again this year. The 29th of this month will be 3 years since she passed away.

Grits...gross. I think I'm the only southerner that doesn't eat grits. When I tell people I don't do the whole grits thing, they look at me like I'm crazy. I hate them, always have. The texture grosses me out, not to mention the taste (or lack thereof).

Were you born in the South? Or are you a transplant? I've never tried grits. Thought about it, but just haven't done it. The texture's kind of grainy, isn't it?
Sorry your mom is gone, but the yearly memorial thing is sweet.

I'm far from a transplant. I've lived in the south all my life. A born and raised southern girl. Yeah, grits are just what they're called. They are very grainy and gritty. Very nasty.

What do you think of my Thanksgiving menu (this Thursday)?

Roast turkey
Baked Ham
Stuffing
Mashed potatoes
Rolls
Gravy
Relish tray (carrot sticks, black olives, dill pickles)
Tossed salad with add-ins of chopped tomatoes, grated cheese & croutons
Corn
Pumpkin pie with optional whipped topping
Assorted beverages....soft drinks, milk & apple cider

I'm cooking for 5 people instead of the usual 2 this year. My son invited 3 of his friends to dinner. That's why I'm making a turkey & a ham. They are all young adults with healthy appetites.
