| pandora | posted 20-May-1999 3:16pm If I never heard anything about this movie or it's counterparts (probably wrong word choice) again, it would be too soon. That about sums up my feelings for it. |
| supplicant | posted 20-May-1999 3:16pm You forgot "I'll wait more than a month, but will see it at the cinema" (as opposed to video). And you should probably have negative options even for simple statements, ie "I don't think the film will be a critical success" because some people won't check it because they just don't have an opinion, not because they believe the negative. Still, it was a good, comprehensive and interesting survey. ObSurvey: It hasn't opened here yet and I won't be seeing it till quite a while after it opens, but I will definitely see it. |
| bill | posted 20-May-1999 3:18pm As a matter of fact, I'm working on creating a "Survey Central Hell" right now... be patient though; Hell is all about waiting. |
| cpierson | posted 20-May-1999 3:32pm First time I saw it, I disliked it -- and I'm a huge SW fan from way back. It was depressing. Second time, I fell in love. I've never had my opinion of a movie turn around like this, and I'm so happy it has. I'm far from the only one to experience this, too. I've talked to a couple friends and coworkers who felt the same way, and there are many people on the newsgroup who went through it too. I think it has to do with going in the first time with too many unreasonable expectations, too many bad vibes from the critics, and too much anxiety overall. The second time, my shields were down, and it won me over. Hell, I even find Jar Jar a little charming now (after the third time I saw it), and I was _convinced_ I'd hate him. For the record, I still think the movie was flawed. But I liked it, almost all my friends liked it, I want to see it again and again, and I cannot _wait_ for Episode II and III. All the naysayers won't be able to change that. |
| gilly | posted 20-May-1999 3:36pm It opened yesterday and you've already seen it three times? Y'know, you can get professional help for that... |
| Pooh_Bear | posted 20-May-1999 3:42pm Will the insanity never end???? |
| dpolicar | posted 20-May-1999 3:46pm This and the 13th floor are currently at the top of my list. Next time I go to the theatre, if they are still showing, I'll likely see one or ther other of them. If I don't get to a theatre before they stop showing, I'll probably rent them some day. It's a movie. I'm psyched about it, but really, it's a movie. |
| fooyun | posted 20-May-1999 4:10pm Obi-Wan is so cute! :) |
| mandy | posted 20-May-1999 4:55pm we will probably take the little one and go and see it this weekend. I will be there for the popcorn, as usual. |
| mandy | posted 20-May-1999 5:03pm bill...as for SC hell...If you need any help or advice during the creation process....I know a gurl with some inside contacts who would be happy to offer her opinion! |
| magbast | posted 20-May-1999 7:00pm the hype is crazy..i think it will be a financial success, but a critical failure...and i will wait for video IF i do see it |
| Wicksy | posted 21-May-1999 5:06am How about explaining who he is before creating a dull and dreary list !!!! |
| Frostbrand | posted 21-May-1999 1:08pm I never listen to the hype. |
| hunter | posted 21-May-1999 1:19pm Wicksy, The Phantom Menace is Episode I of the Star Wars series (a prequel to the previously released trilogy, which was Episodes IV - VI). The hype about it in the US is so intense that I guess the creator assumed we'd all know what it is. It opened on Wednesday, May 19th. |
| laylah93 | posted 21-May-1999 2:58pm Oops. US-centric. Mea Culpa. Bill, hurry up with SC hell. |
| cpierson | posted 21-May-1999 4:21pm Gilly -- you're out of touch. These days, the stock, kewl response to someone doing something you don't approve of is "get a life," not "you need professional help." Keep up with the times, bub. Incidentally, I saw it three times, as follows: 1. Ticket to charity premiere for CF research on Sunday, given to me as a birthday present by thoughtful parents. 2. Opening night, midnight, with most of my friends and coworkers -- about 70 of us in all. 3. Wednesday, 7 PM, because I wanted to see it again with a couple other friends. Yep. Sure looks like I'm mentally ill. |
| supplicant | posted 22-May-1999 3:52am cpierson -- You're out of touch. These days the word 'kewl' and the phrase 'get a life' are actually old cliches. The stock standard response would probably just be to laugh in your face :) Keep up with the times, bub :P |
| mandy | posted 22-May-1999 1:49pm bub? |
| gilly | posted 22-May-1999 11:54pm Oops, how embarrassing. Guess I need to get a life! ;) |
| mandy | posted 23-May-1999 11:58pm Breathtaking digital effects! I was in awe! |
| SueBee | posted 24-May-1999 1:34am WOW! Just got back from the theater...it was AWESOME!! I want to see it again! |
| Wicksy | posted 24-May-1999 4:23am thanks hunter |
| eris | posted 24-May-1999 7:35pm I will wait an indeterminate amount of time. |
| Gamera | posted 24-May-1999 9:09pm "composite overall impression" is a good way to express that quality... |
| bill | posted 25-May-1999 4:30pm I saw it Sunday. I liked it. I thought that the characters weren't as compelling as Luke, Leia and Han. I thought the queen and evil master's deception was transparent. The pod race scene was great though, and the kid who played young Vader was good (kids in movies are often really annoying). I wished there was more dialog during the light saber fights. The other movies had great dialog during the light saber battles... |
| milktree | posted 26-May-1999 3:26pm I was disapointed. It felt formulaic and predictable. I'm going to reserve final judgement until I see it again. |
| bill | posted 26-May-1999 6:23pm It's so creepy how people often talk about seeing this movie more than once as some kind of foregone conclusion. Especially when they didn't like it the first time. |
| mandy | posted 26-May-1999 7:20pm We are going again this weekend.....There is so much going on on the screen at once...you need to see it at least a couple of times to take in all the eye candy...... |
