| romkey | posted 24-Aug-2005 11:20pm There are two things to watch out for when purchasing moving insurance.
The first is the deductible - it's likely that the deductible is high enough that small items (the most likely to be broken) would be of lesser value than the deductible. The second is that they'll probably pay you the current value of the item, not the replacement value. I wouldn't bother. I'd just expect that, hey, you're moving, it's not unlikely that something will be damaged in the course of moving it. If there's negligence or a pattern of damage then I'd say there's a problem; if one small thing gets broken, it's not too suprising. If however I had $6000 in damages then whether or not I had mover's insurance, I'd try to get them to pay for it, and if they refused, I'd get a good attorney. |
| ROCKMAN | posted 25-Aug-2005 6:14am I've always moved my own stuff. I'm guessing you should have gotten the ins. How much would it have been? |
| moonstone | posted 25-Aug-2005 6:58am it depends on what it is, obviously if it's some old cherished family heirloom that can't be replaced the least they could do would be give you a monetary replacement. if its something like you're printer, they should definitely
either buy you a new one or give you the money for a new one. on the other hand, if there was no insurance bought, then they really aren't liable to reimburse you in any way. insurance sucks. |
| judgescratch | posted 25-Aug-2005 8:10am Other.
You need to read the terms the company set up and comply. If buying insurance is the only way to truly protect the value of your stuff, then the two options are to either buy the insurance or use a moving company who has a set of terms which is more accomadating to your needs. BTW, what was the cost of the insurance? |
| Jody | posted 25-Aug-2005 8:54am I think if you don't buy the insurance, you have to accept the risk that there might be damage and it won't be covered. I'm sure it was all spelled out in the paperwork you signed. The moving company I used a few years ago required at least minimal insurance, and it was very affordable ($60). Perhaps next time you could shop around for a company with lower insurance costs, or a company whose services cost less so you'd have additional money to cover insurance. |
| gambler | posted 25-Aug-2005 9:13am No, they shouldn't (full value)....You have the option to buy Movers ins........... and which one of you used the movers 2nd?.......... Not buying it AFTER they damaged your friends stuff was stupid, no?.its the nature of the business, thats why they offer it. |
| Zang | posted 25-Aug-2005 10:49am I've never used a moving company. I used to do moves as part of a job I once had, but we didn't offer insurance and we never broke anything. We didn't pack the stuff either, so I suppose if something did get broken we would have denied responsibility.
It sounds to me like one of those "you pays your money - you take your chances" kind of situations. Considering the fact that the moving company is offering insurance and in both of the examples it wasn't used, you should count yourself lucky that they were willing to offer any renumeration at all. |
| cerealkiller | posted 25-Aug-2005 12:08pm I mentioned twice in Qual that the question and the answers don't match.
1. If you don't get insurance then it's your tough luck if something gets broken. 2. If they break something old they only owe you the depreciated value unless you buy full replacement insurance. 3. They have the option of repairing the item, replacing it or giving you cash. 4. Movers always break something. |
| Enheduanna | posted 25-Aug-2005 12:29pm If you didn't pay for the insurance, then I don't think they should have do pay any more than they paid. |
| teatree | (reply to cerealkiller) posted 25-Aug-2005 1:50pm Judging by her past surveys, it looks as though she doesn't pay much attention to suggestions that would improve her surveys. |
| cerealkiller | (reply to teatree) posted 25-Aug-2005 2:11pm Yeah, and she complained to bill in feedback and he seems to agree that it's okay to make mistakes and bad surveys. I've repeatedly stated I think this site is going downhill and the surveys getting worse but that's my opinion. |
| mve17 | posted 25-Aug-2005 3:52pm thats insane, get insurance and get the full whack back.. |
| TheSpanishFly | posted 25-Aug-2005 5:12pm me and my buddys do all the moving. do you know how much those frigin movers ask for? |
| teatree | (reply to cerealkiller) posted 25-Aug-2005 6:05pm To a certain extent, I agree. |
| they | posted 25-Aug-2005 7:42pm I move my own stuff... I've heard too many stories about this happening. |
| Irene007 | posted 26-Aug-2005 12:06am They shouldn't replace full value no more than an insurance company will replace your stolen car with a new one.
A used $120 printer is not worth more than $25. |
| LindaH | posted 26-Aug-2005 1:10am I've never used a moving company. It's easier to hold friends and relatives accountable. |
| gsummers | posted 26-Aug-2005 3:04pm Although I have never hired movers..I think if they damage something valuable they should replace it or give the customer at least some money for what its worth.. thats an off the cuff answer but thats my reaction to that. |
| gsummers | posted 26-Aug-2005 3:23pm yes..me too.. friends and family, much easier to blame.. good answer. |
| freebird | posted 26-Aug-2005 5:54pm moving companies are always screwing up. I move everything myself. As a matter of fact, I just had an interview in my hometown and may be moving back. I will definitely move my own crap. |
| Dino | posted 26-Aug-2005 7:00pm What about wear and tear on a product? It must be very frustrating though. That's why they have mover insurance. |
| ROCKMAN | (reply to LindaH) posted 28-Aug-2005 12:01pm > I've never used a moving company. It's easier > to hold friends and relatives accountable. > I help move some things for a friend of mine a couple years ago and broke his mower. I bought him a new one, even a better one then he had. Also his mower was a couple years old. I probably should have went to a yard sale and got him one but I'm to damn nice I guess. |
| LindaH | (reply to ROCKMAN) posted 28-Aug-2005 12:23pm I'll call you if I ever move. |
| ROCKMAN | (reply to LindaH) posted 28-Aug-2005 12:39pm I get asked all the time to help someone move and truthfully I'm about done helping everyone. I bet I get asked every other week to move or haul something. I have to much of my own stuff to do. |
| LindaH | (reply to ROCKMAN) posted 28-Aug-2005 12:41pm But....... what if I want you to break my computer? |
| ROCKMAN | (reply to LindaH) posted 28-Aug-2005 12:46pm |
| LindaH | (reply to ROCKMAN) posted 28-Aug-2005 12:47pm oh well. |
| ROCKMAN | (reply to LindaH) posted 28-Aug-2005 1:09pm I bet you could find someone local there who is careless enough to break it for you. Just remember to get the ins. and kick-em back a few bucks to break it for you. |
| LindaH | (reply to ROCKMAN) posted 28-Aug-2005 1:13pm |
| ROCKMAN | (reply to LindaH) posted 28-Aug-2005 1:33pm Just a thought! Got to get going and do some riding, my horse is out front waiting on me and some other friends are supposed to be here shortly. |
| patarnone | posted 28-Aug-2005 3:06pm Read the fine print. Limits of liability and all that rot. If you value your stuff, pay to have it arrive safely.
Insurance seems a waste of money... until something goes wrong. |
| iwish40 | (reply to gambler) posted 28-Aug-2005 11:26pm We used the Moving co. 1st. We didn't know that he used the same company until he got down here.
Also, the Moving company that got paid, left out the fact and it was not in there paperwork that they were not the actual moving company..they were only the Broker. |
| iwish40 | (reply to cerealkiller) posted 28-Aug-2005 11:32pm Is all you do is whine and complain?...If this site is so "Down hill" then why don't you go and create your own survey site.
Seems to me that Bill did agree that your a pain in the ASS! |
| thevelvetcure | posted 29-Aug-2005 2:03am If you're entrusting someone else with your goods, you should have Ins. |
| cloudhugger | posted 29-Aug-2005 5:32pm I would think so, that they would be responsible. Doesn't seem like good business practices. Perhaps some moving companies do offer this, and that is what I would look for. Someone who takes responsiblity for their employees. |
| gambler | (reply to iwish40) posted 29-Aug-2005 6:39pm Ah.......... i gotcha ya |
| autumnlight | posted 30-Aug-2005 5:28pm They should, but then you did get the option to get insurance. You should have just rented a van and moved it yourself and saved yourself a lot of money. |

This, however, is one of the reasons I am making many 700 mile trips to NC carrying loads that I do not want to entrust to movers. I'm carrying anything and everything valuable.
