Keep watching the TV, where the sounds obviously came from.

My ears would perk up and I would listen for more. I used to live alot closer to the city, and potentially there was a high risk factor of guns going off where they should not. Now I am near where there is alot of hunting (legal) so when I do hear it, I am alert so I take extra caution not to walk the dogs towards that direction.

I don't do anything usually.
It would depend too on how close it was and where I was.

I don't do anything. I hear gunshots quite often. A lot of times I won't even notice them until someone else brings it to my attention. Growing up where I did, around the people I did, hearing gunshots became a natural part of life that you don't really think about. If I were in town and heard gunshots and could figure out where they were coming from, I might report it to the police.

The only time I've ever heard gunshot sounds is at the gun club where they belong. I wouldn't mistake a car backfiring or any other sound with that as I am familiar with it.

Think it is probably fireworks or a car backfiring and usually ignore it. Especially figure it's fireworks around the times of New Year, Chinese New Year, or other Chinese celebrations, since I live near Chinatown.

Ask someone what it sounded like
I do something else...just stop and ponder and listen for a few moments more to see if I can assess with more clarity what the sound was.

This time of year, assume it's fireworks. Other times of the year, assume it's hunters.

Guess about what it could be... It's not very likely to be gun shots but sometimes I wonder.

That's only when you're in the bush! What happens at the Senate?? Huh? Ever think of that? Can't you just see all the RCMP come screaming in?

That's not really funny but it sure gives us a little insight on what you experience regularly... well, maybe in the past.

Hey Irene, I am out of context here, but I need to ask you something and that chatroom was frustrating. When you get a chance could you email me dleas21@yahoo.com. It concerns one of the kitty names you suggested.

I've never heard sounds of gun shots. ( except for T.V ) but if I did hear that sort of noise I would probably just jump a little with a start.

Hit the deck!

Yell, "Duck, they're not ours!"

Return fire.

Usually in that order.

I'd call the police if it was during hunting season. There has always been a problem with hunters trespassing onto my property even though it's posted. The police average at least three arrests each and every deer season just from my property alone. I'd call the police if I heard gunfire off season, too. I've also had problems with poachers, people hunting out of season and those who use the wooded area for target practice.

I recently experienced this after Hurricane Rita. There was marshall law and some looting from what I understand. I was lying in bed the night after the hurricane passed, hot, no electricity, not safe enough to open the windows, too many mosquitos anyway and sure enough, gunshot. unmistakeably. i took another sedative.

It depends... if it sounds REALLY close, I get away from the windows. If it sounds like it's in the distance... I continue with whatever it is that I'm doing.
