I wish they'd hurry up and announce the 99 winner. I'm getting antsy.

I've read a few of them and have a few more of them here waiting to be read. I'm an SF/F fan, so eventually I'll do the traditional thing and work my way down the list :)

Brian: The next Worldcon is still four months away, so I suggest you prepare to wait ;)

Someone has WAY too much time on their hands. Long surveys bore me.

I think there's a difference between a long survey and a survey with a lot of options - it's not like these options actually take thought "Have I read this?" "What about this?" is not exactly challenging, it's not like "If in hypothetical situation Y would I behave in X manner? and if so why? or perhaps I'd behave more like Z manner...?"

This is an aside. I don't like Science Fiction, but the Hugo is presented at the World Science Fiction Convention every year, and that's a hell of a party. If it comes to your area, don't miss it. You just THINK people on the net are weird. Wait until you see people strolling around a mall in chain mail.

I changed this survey to be sorted, and I reformatted to the answers to have more spacing so the page would stretch better.

"I didn't like any of them" seems like an odd single opinion (vs. experience) option to add in.

There are very few of these that I haven't read that I want to read. I've started a couple of them and put them down unfinished. Like most of these kind of awards, the Hugos are more of a popularity contest than a good-writing award.

The Diamond Age. And a lot of the others are "on my list"... just haven't gotten to them yet.

BTW: Good survey.

Some of the ones I've read were amazingly great and remain on my best books list, others were OK (and I wondered why they were so highly rated).

I've read about 40% of these, and I liked all the ones I read.

I didn't mean to imply that there aren't some very good books on here, just that it's not a list I'm trying to complete. In fact, a couple of my all-time faves are on here (Speaker for the Dead and The Dispossessed). I'm curious about Fritz Leiber, but it looks like this is a bad place to ask about his work :)

Interesting: I've read and enjoyed '82 -'88 but very few before and none since.

What are the Hugo Awards? I would have thought it to be a good survey, except that should have been defined a little better.

they, the Hugo Awards are voted on by the paying members of the annual World Science Fiction Convention (i.e. anyone who wants to pay $100+ to vote and/or go to the con) and are presented in various categories (novel, novella, short story, film/TV, etc.). The above choices are the winners in the "novel" category.

Not One... What are they, Sci Fi? Help????

hunter: I'm not sure I really agree that the Hugo awards are a popularity contest entirely. There is certainly a bit of that, like "Hmmm... this novel wasn't very good, but their other novels are so I'll vote for them" but I think it is less of a popularity contest than something like the Oscars, which is kind of ironic since the Hugos are voted by a bunch of fans, whereas the Oscars are voted by the industry :) (I would also say the Nebulas suffer the same problem as the Oscars)
