I usually wear all my clothes until they are totally worn out and falling apart, then I throw them away. Things that don't fit comfortably or I've decided I don't really like get donated to the thrift shop.

Some stuff I save forever... The rest of the stuff is gone through by my friends, and then sent to the Goodwill. It's pretty fitting since I get a lot of my clothes at thrift stores anyway...

By the time I don't want to wear something, it is so holey and worn it isn't much good even as a rag. My mother has other ideas though...

Fun game for two: put on old ratty outfits that aren't fit to be worn in public any more and then cut or tear each others' outfits to pieces.

I throw away stuff that is ruined, donate the rest. Several different charitable organizations call me on the phone a lot to arrange for pick-up. It's very convenient. None of my clothes are very old (I think).

If someone my size is around when I'm winnowing my closets, they get first dibs. Most of my former housemates have clothes of mine. I'm the youngest and smallest of my sisters, so I tend to be the familial hand-me-down terminus, which has been very cool most of my life and I miss it now that we're geographically separated. If there are clothes no one is interested or available to take, I take them to a consignment shop near here. They pick out the ones they think will sell and give me a receipt for them. The rest they take to women's shelters for me. After two months I get 50% store credit or 40% cash of the sale price on anything that's sold. It's a good deal for me.

Other: they're all still sitting in my closet or dresser. Except shoes -- I chuck shoes, because they get really nasty.

I'm trying to get rid of some before I move. Anyone know of a good group in Boston that will pick stuff up?

It's all in the back of my closet.

I don't "don't want" until they're really unwearable, so at that point they're not really good enough for charity donations, Sometimes they'll end up as rags for cleaning or the like.

I saw a comedian once talking about how her father wore his boxers to rags and that once her mother had taken a pair and been using them as a rag for a while when he found them and started wearing them again. She said her mother noticed because not only did he smell of lemon Pledge, but she could see her face reflected in his butt :)

Hunter, your comment reminds me of Libby Gelman-Waxner's review of "Universal Soldier", where she says that Jean-Claude Van Damme's rear looks like it's been polished "with love and Lemon Pledge" * smile *

I put them in a big pile which I intend to bring to charity but don't. From time to time, if someone needs a rag or a paint shirt, I'll raid the pile.

We have a program here in our town that helps displaced homemakers(women and men whose work experience has only *"only" meaning no work experience elsewhere...not "only" meaning homemaking is somehow less important or requires less skill* included raising children and caring for a household) find work after being widowed, divorced or some other instance where they would need to find work. It helps them take all those skills they have used so well to run a family and transfer them into actual usable experience to list on a resume and find work outside the home. I usually donate any really nice clothing items to this program. Many of the women in the program do not have the resources to buy nice clothing for job interviews. The rest of my used clothes go to the Humane Society Thrift Store.

...currently in the middle of a project to reincarnate my favorite jeans from 3 years ago... i'm cutting up one pair of jeans that I don't like and sewing patches underneath the little worn holes in the 'good' jeans.... maybe then they'll last another 6 months!
