How many people with the each of the following names do you currently know?

(I am aware that it's hard to define 'knowing' someone, and you may chose to interpret it in your own way. However, if you wish guidelines, they are as follows: either someone you know really well, like a good friend or a family members, somebody you can just call up to chat, somebody you meet on diurnal basis.)

What I have compiled here is the 10 most common first names in North America. What you have to do for each name is tell me how many from each name you know (eg. I know four Daves).

The names:
James (Jamie)
John (Jon, Jonathan, Johnny)
Robert (Bob, Bobby)
Mary
Michael (Mike, Mikey)
William (Will, Bill, Billie, Willy)
David (Dave)
Richard (Dick)
Charles (Charlie)
Joseph (Joe)

I know at least 2 charlies/charleses. I think I might know a Richard (Richy to be exact) but no one uses the nickname "dick" anymore. I know a Jamie, I know at least 3 Jonathans and maybe even a Johnny. I know maybe one Robert, but I do know a lot of "Roberts" as a last name. (btw: I dont think I know of any Bob's.) I definatly know a Michale or two. I know a Will and a few Bills (I had no idea there was a connection).

And why do I get the feeling that this is a caviartaste survey?

I know a lot of all of these names. It would take me o long to count them all up for each name. Dave, Mike, and John would be the most. Like I know probably without counting them 20 Johns and 20 Mikes. I know a lot of people and see a lot of them all the time. Hell I know 6 other Randys that I see all the time. As a matter of fact we all know each other too.

I'm assuming middle names don't count and defining "knowing" as seeing them on a reasonably regular basis...

James/Jamie - 2, but one of those is stretching it a bit.
John - 0
Robert - 1
Mary - 0
Michael - 0
William - 0
David - 2, but again one of those is stretching it.
Richard - 0
Charles - 0
Joseph - 1.

Interesting that 3 of the 6 I know are close family members.

I don't think that it matters that you know a female Johnnie. I know a girl named Charlie and I still counted her. Many male names these days are unisex.

I see. I see so many people that I know on a regular basis because of my businesses and hobbies and things. Saturday I went on a poker run with my Harley and there were about a hundred Bikers there and I knew over half of them. That's only part of my Biker Buddy crowd. Then there's my horseback riding crowd of friends. Then I have a couple other big groups of friends. I know a ton of people!!

Chris is a split between Christopher, Christian, and myriad other names from which it can be derived. The list that I used for this dealt with proper names not nicknames.
Do you want to have a common name?

Not entirely, I only mentioned Chris for the reason you mentioned. Throughout 1st grade - high school, there were always at least one other 'Chris' or some such derivative, and often there were two others.

Christopher (4)
Kris (1)
