Queens: Matty comes from Matthew, but is very much an atypical derivation; the pronunciation of "Matty" is more commonly associated with "Maddy" for Maddeline. However, it is common in the City of New York for a "y" to be put at the end of a masculine name when that person is especially beloved or notable in his neighborhood. Petey, Pauly, Mikey, Sally, Matty, etc. I go home a lot and am still a preson of note where I grew up. Some people these days call me "Matty, the Fed."

I heard Spiegelglas by Gottfried von Strassburg. So begun my love with the legend of Tristan and Isolde. It is also my favourite opera by one of my favourite composers.

"Iseult was the daughter of King Anguish of Ireland who was the intended bride of King Mark of Cornwall, but as a result of drinking a love-potion, hopelessly enamoured of Tristan. When she heard of Tristan's death, Iseult died of a broken heart."

I always assumed your uname came from Star Trek. In one of the Next generation episodes, the Borg massacred the Federation fleet at Wolf 359. I bet the writers for Star Trek also liked that Outer Limits episode.

I've never watched Star Trek, The Next Generation except for maybe a few episodes. I'm a committed original Star Trek fan myself. However, I have been told that the name is from that show by others, but I agree with you that someone must have taken it from the OL episode...maybe someone who was a fan of the episode as I am. Now Locutus...I did see that episode and know where he likely got his user name, the same going for Strider (who used to go by his real name).

*smile* You're never too old, but you have to start with the right ones. You have to really be a fan to get much from the later ones that were churned out at a really high rate. Pretty much anything published before 1945 is worth reading, although the pre-1940 ones are generally the best. That said, the later books might appeal to you more than me having a rather stereotypical English lord as a major character.

Biggles
(reply to Iseult) posted 13-Apr-2005 1:55pm

Some of them were written in the 1930s - they weren't the most enlightened times - and there was a tendency towards racism at times. By the later books, Biggles was a reformed man - the final, unfinished novel even had him getting a new recruit of Native American heritage. There were also accusations of homosexuality - obviously, you can't have a group of unmarried men living together or really caring for one another unless they're all gay...(actually, I think one of the characters is gay - but the others all had relationships with women). Then there was the swearing - at one time, phrases like "what the hell" and even "by Jove" were considered too risque for children's books. They also highlight British imperialism and that was very unpopular at one point as well.

Oh, also Biggles was a complete cigarette addict - as was his second in command (but he seemed to tone his smoking down later on). In the later books it's freely acknowledged as a bad habit - but I suppose librarians didn't approve of heroes with flaws. There was also mentions of alcohol that were censored out in some editions of the books - during the first war, Biggles gets a bit of a dependence on alcohol because his nerves go to pieces - it seems that wasn't on either.

I was making a joke when I said Joan Collins had bigger breasts than I did and I did make the connection. I just chose to be silly when replying but I also thought that if you had looked at my user profile you would have seen that it said I was male. As to drinks, about the only thing I drink is a beer from time to time. I'm just not that fond of alcoholic drinks. I'd much rather have coffee, iced tea or juice. They taste better to me than alcoholic drinks.
Wolfgang
(reply to bcollins) posted 21-Apr-2005 1:18pm

Rockman should hear a lecture from you. Collins is the last name of certain alcoholic beverages, though they are rather archaic...and do not know if they even exist any longer. Here are some ice tea specialties....for you!!

Boil fresh water in Kettle. Do not underboil or overboil.
Wash pot with little warm water, add Nathmulls Tea Leaves (one teaspoon per cup and one extra for the pot).
Pour boiled water into pot and keep covered for 3 to 5 minutes, to allow brewing.
Stir, strain, add milk and sugar to taste and sip in the goodness of Nathmulls Exotic Darjeeling Teas.
Bcollins, please note these simple variations. Everyone will love you forever after sipping these gems. I think as far as ice tea goes...more is better!

Prepare hot Darjeeling Tea the normal way. Add a few drops of fresh lemon juice with a little sugar to taste. Stir and sip in the richness of Nathmulls Lemon Darjeeling Tea.

Brew Tea the normal way using two teaspoons of tea per person. While serving, fill half of a tall glass with ice cubes and pour the tea liquor into the glass. Add a few drops of fresh lemon juice, a couple of slices of lemon and some sugar to taste. A sprig of mint enhances the taste. Cool for a few minutes and enjoy the magic of Nathmulls Iced Tea.

Mix a cup each of milk and water in a kettle and put to boil. Grind a clove, a stick of cinnamon, a pod of cardamom with a few strands of saffron and put into the boiling mixture. Add two teaspoons of strong Nathmulls Assam C.T.C. Tea and sugar to taste. Boil for a couple of minutes till the mixture becomes caramel coloured. Strain and serve hot.

(reply to Wolfgang) posted 21-Apr-2005 9:55pm

As much as I like iced tea, that's too much for lazy me to make. I generally have iced tea when I'm eating out. I don't think I've ever made it at home. In fact, I don't think I even have a container that I could put it in. I'm such a bachelor! I don't own a tea kettle or tea pot either. I have little use for those because I don't care for hot tea and never make it. My cookware is very basic. Just a couple of skillets and a couple of saucepans. I don't do much 'real' cooking.
