| bill | posted 17-Apr-1999 12:27pm Some of these I've seen because I was specifically looking for them. On our honeymoon, my wife and I were in a Canadian park (Banff/Jasper), we made several trips just to look for various animals. I even have some pictures of them. We saw bald eagles, a black bear, a pair of Moose, elk everywhere, and bighorn sheep. |
| romkey | posted 17-Apr-1999 2:15pm wild turkeys! |
| magbast | posted 17-Apr-1999 2:56pm i've lived in the country most of my life..so most of these are common place.... |
| mandy | posted 17-Apr-1999 3:13pm Raccoons come to our doorstep to eat cat food! We also have a lot of bald eagles where we live. |
| miykal | posted 17-Apr-1999 6:44pm You're a north American arn't you? I've seen them all, and kangaroo, ostrich, lion, tiger, elephant, llama, snakes lots of snakes, etc etc etc etc.................................................michael |
| jonathan | posted 17-Apr-1999 8:16pm I've also seen bison, Dall sheep, lots of rodents (beavers, woodchucks, mice, rats, raccoons - yeah they're not officially rodents but you try cleaning up after they've gotten into the garbage, etc.), whales, birds, insects and reptiles. |
| supplicant | posted 18-Apr-1999 2:21am Kangaroo, Koala, Wallaby, Wombat, Snake... our bush is a tad different to American woods ;) |
| Pomeranian | posted 18-Apr-1999 3:24am I have actually seen wild house-cat sized cats. At Umass Amherst, there was (and may still be), a shack that a person could crawl under. If you did then you would see about a hundred cats without owners hanging around. I suspect they lived off the kindness of humans who would give them food but mostly by chasing mice in the nearby woods. Rumor has it that they are the offspring of house cats who have been abandoned by students. If you were *very* still and very patient, the cats might approach you. |
| North79 | posted 18-Apr-1999 12:50pm Let's see..deer, bear, rabbit, duck, goose, porcupine, fox, wolf, squirrel, woodpecker, skunk, moose, salamander, frog, toad, tadpole on this list. Also saw several snakes in Hong Kong and wallabies in Australia. |
| pandora | posted 18-Apr-1999 1:53pm I've seen a dead armadillo while on vacation, but no live ones. |
| they | posted 18-Apr-1999 2:16pm I petted a toad in the woods just yesterday. :) |
| cpierson | posted 18-Apr-1999 6:54pm Been up close to a skunk when it was ready to spritz the family dog. Dunno how I got out of that one unscathed. Also, for the long-legged bird category, I had a blue heron nearly land on me once when I was relaxing in the pool. Crap, those suckers are _big_. |
| bill | posted 19-Apr-1999 7:55am I saw a dead opossum on the side of the road yesterday, does that count? |
| steve | posted 19-Apr-1999 5:40pm Prairie dogs. |
| phi | posted 19-Apr-1999 11:20pm Coons. Wild boars. Many bird species, the most interesting of which are flamingos, condors, parrots, hawks, and wild turkeys. |
| DigbyOBare | posted 20-Apr-1999 11:23am Raccoons too! |
| grmbrand | posted 20-Apr-1999 4:49pm Wild horses, lots of marine life that wasn't listed at all, etc... |
| Mattias | posted 20-Apr-1999 7:53pm I won't make a list of all the animals I've seen; but I can mention beaver as on of them that wasn't on the list. |
| eris | posted 22-Apr-1999 3:06pm Pika, marmot, elk, lizard (non-iguana), raccoon... and now, having read other people's responses, many birds and fish, Dall sheep, goats, humpback whales, dolphins, sea turtles, various snakes. |
| seth | posted 25-Apr-1999 3:51pm also elk, buffalo, various snakes including rattlesnake, raccoon (of course), bighorn sheep, mice, rats, and something similar to a groundhog but I can't remember the name. Probably lots more I don't remember off the top of my head. |
| seth | posted 25-Apr-1999 4:04pm Marmot! That was it. Thanks, eris. Owls, bald eagles, and a dolphin too. Oh, and sea lions and elephant seals. Elephant seals are BIG. |
| gilly | posted 26-Apr-1999 12:40pm Dolphin, right--I forgot about swimming with them in the wild. That was pretty incredible. |
| eris | posted 26-Apr-1999 6:48pm Ooh! Something just reminded me. I forgot "sea otter"! It was a truly rapturous experience - I was wading in the Pacific in high wind and moderately heavy surf, and there it was just a few yards away, looking right at me! |
| SueBee | posted 8-May-1999 3:11pm Many of those listed as well as bald eagles, owls, rattlesnakes (and others), Orcas, sting rays, crabs, starfish, and other sea life, etc., etc., etc... Fun survey! |
| bluebird1974 | posted 13-Jun-1999 10:31am I am so glad you put armadillo!!!!!!! It was the most fascinating animal I HAVE EVER SEEN IN THE WILD AND I WAS JUST WONDERING DID YOU PUT THIS OPTION FOR ME? |
| they | posted 15-Jun-1999 10:13pm I put armadillo as an option because in ohio, most of the dead animals you see on the road are opossums... it was odd to me that when I went down south, the opossums were replaced by armadillos. |
| bluebird1974 | posted 17-Jun-1999 10:54pm I never saw an armadillo till I went to Florida and I was very excited about it. Really no opossums? |
