| dab | (reply to icurok) posted 26-Jan-2005 10:08am Forbidding 'emotional harm' opens the door for all sorts of problems. "It distresses me to know that those two men are living together in sin. It therefore must be forbidden" That sort of thing. |
| icurok | (reply to dab) posted 26-Jan-2005 11:06am I think there's a difference between mere distress and actual emotional harm. I've been distressed by footage of the tsunami but I wouldn't say I've suffered emotional harm as a result.
Either way, I'll introduce a corollary to the previous law. Anyone claiming to suffer genuine emotional harm as a result of the imagined actions of a pair of consenting adults in the privacy of their own home will have their claims verified by two independent clinical psychiatrists, to be appointed by the court. If the claim is found to be bogus, they will be fined for wasting the court's time and pay all legal costs. If the claim is found to be genuine, they are to be thrown off a bridge. How does that sound? |

Yeah... I worked with this girl who cried when her phone wasn't installed on a Saturday as she expected (she was from Lebanon - I guess if you have the money there; they'll do it! In North America? NOT!) and she cried when the British embassy kept her on hold too long when trying to arrange a trip back home (it was a long distance call) and she cried when her knees ached from constant exercise (she exercised every night - she was sexually frustrated...) then she cried when the doctor told her to lay off the exercise for a while. She cried when she had a urinary infection and had to stay overnight at the hospital then came back and told everyone how she saw death (while my boss was being treated for cancer of the colon and she never, ever complained!). She cried when she screwed up a job and felt like everyone was "ganging up" on her. She cried when she told me about the boyfriend she left back home... She was there only a year and was I ever glad when she quit!! Then she was replaced with another one who had OCD tendencies... I like working alone... (The nutty customers, thankfully, don't come in day after day!) |

| cesibon | posted 1-Feb-2005 3:37pm my law would be Treat All Living Things As You Wish To Be Treated - that means not leaving your dog in a hot car on summer days, not cutting a tree down just because it obstructs your "view", using deterrents instead of traps for "pests", kids/physically challenged/deaf are people too - respecting life, any and all life, is important - it's all around us, in everything - it is also ephemeral and NEVER lasts forever, despite what your Grandpa told you when you were 6 years old (you know who you are!) so we have to care for it as best we can while it's here |
