If you had one wish, would you give it up for humanity?

Starting 3-4 years ago, I began the superstitious practice of wishing on the first star of the night, or a falling star. The wish has always been the same : a better world and the spiritual evolution of humanity. Peace on Earth, in a nutshell. If you had a REAL wish that you knew would come true, would you ask the same, or would you ask for money, fame, an easy life, etc.
Be honest.
There is no other, you have only this moment to decide.

if i really, really had one wish, that would really come true, i'd wish for a butt load of money. fudge it.

i've always done the wishing on the first star of the night, too. i remember wishing for a baby brother or sister when i was about 6 years old.....and then along came colin. for the longest time i thought it was all because of me. * smile *

Right now, if I could have one thing, I'd go for a new pair of glassess with which I could actually see properly. My eyesight has been worse and worse. All those nights of reading with only one small light have taken its toll.

I've become wary of projecting my own will upon others. Even if that will is good intentioned like world peace, it would still be forcing other people to do something that I wanted without their consent. Also, if you think about it, what does world peace really mean? Most conflict breaks down to a battle over resources. That's just life, nature itself. It's naive to think we can somehow wish that process into being harmonious. Conflict and struggle are what life is all about, it's the crucible that enables our evolution... without it, we'd be stagnant and dead.

On a meta-level, I think wishes are not meant to be taken literally. Wishes and prayers are tools that allow us to understand ourselves. If you're wishing for world peace, ask yourself why, dig deeper, know yourself. If you're wishing for more money, there's nothing wrong with that. But why... Knowing why, knowing yourself will help guide your life.

Actual before I read your explanation I was going to reply that I would make things better for all humanity. For in doing so I would benefit also. A wish for money has no imagination, and who wants fame? But life would be more pleasant with out sickness and war. No poverty, what else could you want

what in the WORLD is the spiritual evolution of humanity? destroying itself is what first came to mind when I read that.... The only spiritual direction humanity or an individual moves to without God is destruction. There will never be Peace on Earth. Instead of "wishing" on a star, I think I would spend my energy praying.
That is what my decision is..... to pray....instead of wishing. To have Peace on Earth, one would have to undo millions of years of human wrongs and go back to the very first one - when Eve fell - if you could REVERSE that - then there might be Peace on Earth....otherwise - no.
a wish is often a figure of speech for me though I try not to let it be......so I made a prayer a long time ago that anytime I spoke of wishes that God would know the true nature of my heart as I spoke it and take it as a prayer if the wish was like that.... ......since I made that prayer, you'd be suprized how many times I've said casually that I wished something would happen and it did.....

no b/c if there was peace on earth then it wouldn't be so interesting. If I had one wish it would be just to make it on Broadway. That's my life goal. I know it sounds stupid & immature but I just can not explain my passion to any one. It's all I think about and all I want to do.

Perhaps "world piece" is a better way to write it. The world, everyone wants a piece of it. I know I want me piece. No, there's nothing wrong with wanting world peace or healing... it's noble to want the world to be better. Though, I assume most people want this. Even people who want the big pile of money, may take that money and use it in a way that helps others. Even just buying stuff with it could be seen to help others by fueling the economy and providing jobs. Things are so interconnected, and there are billions of perspectives. I think what we do in our day to day lives is the most important. Being loving and supportive of your family is the best way to heal the world.

i have a feeling that wishes of this nature reflect oneself. your my age, maybe you can understand what i mean. i've been here a long time. ill be dead someday, no doubt about that, and what pisses me off more than my innability to get what i want out of life is the whole collective mess. the whole system of humanity is based on wrongness. i'm still selfish. what i want to do, i will do, but the point is, i am insignificant, and so are you. this world is old, and will go on for much longer than anybody thinks. if i could sacrifice my happiness for the future happiness of this world, why wouldnt i do it? im just a speck. it doesnt matter anymore that i cant find my place in the world, it matters that the world should find a place in itself. i would honestly die to bring about the means of a better earth, not like there is a scenario where that would take place, but...
see my point? we're all selfish, but is anybody so selfish they would forsake the world and all lives to come for some years of luxury? and then to die? whats the point of that, its completely contemptuous.
heyzeus1

and i dont want a piece of the world. i do get jealous once in a while looking at other people, seeing their possesions, and supposed ease, compared to my constant struggle just to have a home and eat, but....that is just insignificant. maybe i just dont belong here. more likely i think i always belonged here, and i have seen my home 'invaded' and 'wrecked' and i am feeling territorially defensive. this mother earth is more important than the people on it. if the 'people' are so selfish trhey would destroy it, than i dont even want to be counted as a member of humanity.

just look at the results of this survey. if we could assume (like most polls do) that this represents everybody, than most people on this earth only care about bettering themselves over bettering the whole world (which happens to also include themselves). so, while you are right that humanity can better the world, this small poll suggests that the majority doesnt want to.

Not really. If someone gave me the choice of whether I could save a country of starving people or take $25 million in cash I wouldn't have to think about that at all. Give me the money.
On the other hand, if I see a homeless person or someone needing help I give them money. There's one guy who 'lives' in the grocery store parking lot. He actually acts embarassed when you try to help him. I buy him food sometimes. I don't, however support the ones holding "will work for food" signs. Around here it's known that they make up to $100 a day doing that. It's their 'job'. They have been seen after a day of taking hand-outs walking down the street, get into their nice car and drive away.

I didn't see the point on throwing away a wish on something I believe is improving anyway. I have problems with the idea anyway - maybe the genie would decide it would be best for humanity to evolve into beings incapable of love. I'd rather humanity controlled its own destiny. If I had a wish, I'd use it for something more specific than this. Maybe "I wish we had an effective vaccine for HIV" or that kind of thing. Voting no doesn't mean you're selfish.
