| southernyankee | posted 9-Dec-2004 3:10pm i havent compeletely moved out just yet. I probabbly wont have their help though, cause by then, I wont have too much junk to move with me |
| darkshadowsseeker | posted 9-Dec-2004 3:17pm My grandmother gave me some pots, pans, skillets, cooking utensils, dishes, flatware, towels, sheets, bedding, etc. She had tons of this stuff because she used to live on a farm and cooked not only for her family, but the hired hands as well, plus the seasonal threshing crew. I bought a few things myself such as a handmixer and toaster, but most of my stuff came from my grandmother. My first place was furnished as to furniture (bed, chairs, table, living room furniture), stove, fridge. |
| Enheduanna | posted 9-Dec-2004 3:54pm Yes, sort of. They bought me a couple items of furniture, although they were really birthday presents. They've always helped me out with things I needed. |
| BerrieGrrl | posted 9-Dec-2004 4:56pm no, not like right away as presents or anything. she'd occasionally pick up something if she'd see it, like dish towels or whatever. |
| Lahdee | posted 9-Dec-2004 5:37pm My ex-step mom gave me some of her old stuff. I guess that counts. |
| autumnlight | posted 9-Dec-2004 6:44pm Kind of. They gave me some plates and pans, but only because they had recently replaced their old ones. I bought absolutely everything else myself, which I was happy to do cos I wanted my stuff for my place. |
| juliw | posted 9-Dec-2004 7:09pm I still live with my Mom and sister. We lived in the same house all my life. (Until his death, my Dad lived there, too.) He and my Mom moved into that house when they were first married (in 1949). I was born in 1954. My sister was born in 1960. About a month and a half ago, the three of us moved into an apartment. We brought many things from the house. Mom bought a new living room set, and bedroom sets for me and my sister. My sister bought some things for her own room and the bathroom she shares with Mom. She also bought some things for the apartment (a new crock pot, a TV stand, etc.) I bought my bedding and some things for my private bathroom. I plan to buy some more things for all of us to share, and some more things for myself. |
| ASexyBabe | posted 9-Dec-2004 8:50pm When I was getting ready to move out my mom got me dishes and pots and pans and other kitchen stuff, cleaning stuff, garbage cans, laundry basket and towels. My step daughter will be 18 in April and I made a long list of things to get by then to give to her to help her out. The list basically has everything imaginable on it you need to start a home besides furniture. She already has a bedroom set, desk and a recliner. I always thought it was very cool of my mom to get me all those things so I wanted to continue the tradition. She will have many many gifts to open for her birthday. |
| Galomorro | posted 9-Dec-2004 9:39pm My mom made me a pillow cover and some curtains for my front door. They didn't do much of this though. |
| caviartaste | posted 9-Dec-2004 10:21pm yeah - all the essentials for college....there was sort of a collection that seems to just naturally "occur" between all of my mom's family...and all of the "stuff" just magically appears before anyone goes off to school.....you're set... |
| iamdonte | posted 9-Dec-2004 10:26pm nope - I moved from my parents house into a dorm. Later, moved in with my SO whom I later married. |
| kirst | posted 9-Dec-2004 10:47pm No, I don't think so. My mom bought me that kind of stuff at Christmas, but I don't remember her giving me anything specific when I first left. (She did buy me some stuff when I went to college, though. I just don't consider that when I left home to be "out on my own".) |
| Iseult | posted 9-Dec-2004 11:09pm I haven't moved out on my own yet, I live in the dorms, but I'll depend on my parents for at least next ten years, until I'm done my PhD because, quite frankly, who is going to support them when they're old? |
| romkey | posted 10-Dec-2004 12:33am When I first moved out, I moved into a dorm room at MIT and didn't really need anything.
|
| ROCKMAN | posted 10-Dec-2004 5:49am Yes my Mom set me up with an old set of dishes and some pots and pans. Just recently I got her a new set of cookware. I have a crapload of stuff now cause I do a hell of a lot of cooking/grilling/smoking. |
| Zang | posted 10-Dec-2004 9:37am As I recall, just food and small amounts of cash. That was over 23 years ago, so it is a little foggy. My mother still gives me little care packages now and then. The last time I saw them it was some peanut butter cookies. My dad still shoots me small amounts of cash now and then too! I think the last time it was $20 or $40. |
| Jemmy | posted 10-Dec-2004 1:14pm I still live with my mom. |
| thresholdking | posted 10-Dec-2004 6:49pm They got me nothing, if I had moved closer they probably would have though. |
| they | posted 11-Dec-2004 12:09am Yep. |
| heyzeus1 | posted 11-Dec-2004 2:48am hell no |
| gambler | posted 11-Dec-2004 1:46pm No not really, but anything I wanted they would have helped had I asked |
| Glassa | posted 11-Dec-2004 7:39pm My husband's parents bought us a washer & dryer. We still currently live in their duplex, although not for free. |
| lily333 | posted 11-Dec-2004 8:29pm I think my mom gave me a few things like old towels and a few dishes as far as I remember. I don't think she was thrilled about my moving out two weeks after my graduation with my boyfriend. |
| ashwini | posted 12-Dec-2004 6:56am they want me to grow as an individual |
| iwish40 | posted 12-Dec-2004 2:39pm I from Florida to California, my dad was so upset with me..he wouldn't even speak to me at the airport while we were waiting for the plane to come in. |
| kitti_723 | posted 12-Dec-2004 8:54pm my parents have never helped me when I have moved out. My dad gave me a table when my boyfriend died. |
| columbia | posted 12-Dec-2004 10:10pm I'm a poor college student. They gave me stuff for my dorm but that's all. Ohh the joy's of going home for christmas. |
| columbia | (reply to caviartaste) posted 12-Dec-2004 10:13pm WOW not true!!! The stuff never appeared for me!!! See it's b/c I'm not Ashley (just kidding). I think I got cheated though. Sad |
| caviartaste | (reply to columbia) posted 12-Dec-2004 10:52pm is there something you need? |
| columbia | (reply to caviartaste) posted 12-Dec-2004 11:02pm no I already bought it all |
| caviartaste | (reply to columbia) posted 13-Dec-2004 7:09am now, see...... that's where you gotta learn the lessons they don't teach you in school!!!!
If somebody asks you "is there something you need?" You say "YES!!!" and then you proceed to give them your grocery list, and/or shopping list, and/or Christmas list and/or book list, and/or birthday list and/or To do list and/or Roadtrip list, and or DramaClub list and/or Sorority outing list ....etc, etc.... capisci? You NEVER EVER don't have a list!!!!! |
| Irene007 | posted 14-Dec-2004 1:11am Not really but they did co-sign for a loan for me to buy second-hand furniture;
A brass bed (the head only) A "Colonial" livingroom set - ( I will never own that kind of furniture again) and other stuff I've forgotten about. All for $700. I wish I could remember the rest of the "stuff" was because $700 seems like an awful lot for such cheap crap... |
| sades | posted 14-Dec-2004 10:41am i had already bought what i needed but my mom did give me a lot of house plants that didn't last too long. although the we plucked daily |
| moviesnob | posted 16-Dec-2004 6:04am I got laundry bags, towels, dishes, cleaning stuff, all that jazz. It was nice. |
| Maarten | posted 21-Dec-2004 8:31am Yes, kitchen essentials, bed linnen, an old bed, cupboards, an old bank and a chair. |
| RaveDevil | posted 28-Dec-2004 6:12pm Haven't moved out yet. I feel really funny about still living with my parents, immature mostly. But, if there is one good thing about it, you save ALOT of money. |
| Updown | posted 11-Jan-2005 5:06pm I graduated college and my Pop gave me $1,000.00. That helped, but I was pretty much on my own by that time.
