| fiore | posted 2-Feb-1998 1:11pm I think life is unfair from what I see around me, but life can definitely be what you make it. If you strive hard you can accomplish anything in life. |
| bill | posted 2-Feb-1998 1:54pm I think that once you find your groove, once you learn to follow your bliss, once you "just be" - that life flows into you and through you and you end up having a great time. I believe this is a Taoist notion. |
| steve | posted 2-Feb-1998 2:54pm Life is not fair. Life is also not plaid. "Fair" just doesn't apply to life. |
| Atzilut | posted 2-Feb-1998 2:59pm Life is. It just is. It's merely an objective fact, you can't apply normative statements like 'fair' or 'unfair' to it. |
| Twanger | posted 2-Feb-1998 5:30pm Life is unfair (in general, mine's not so bad), and i'd say i'm looking at a high two pair, maybe a low straight. Stuff is pretty cool for me compared to, say, starving children in Iraq right now, and I would be pretty ignorant not to see that. **very well stated elijahB |

| mozzer | posted 3-Feb-1998 12:35pm If life was fair Aphex Twin would be no 1 in the charts. |
| Huixian | posted 5-Feb-1998 3:44am life is what you personally make it out to be, for better or worse |
| Dahlia | posted 9-Feb-1998 4:59am When I was a child, life was what was made for me.. but now that I am on my own.. life is whatever I choose to make of it. |
| zoomie | posted 10-Feb-1998 12:26am Life can be very unfair. It's a major lesson I learned, while whining about the unfairness of life in general to a counselor many years ago. (I was very young) I was complaining that ' it's not fair' and she said, 'whoever said life was fair?' It was a moment of enlightenment, which does sound very dumb in the retelling. I don't personally see that the statement 'life is what you make it' has much to do with the fair/unfair part. Sometimes, no matter what you do, life is unfair. It's not always what you make it, or something you can control, or change. That's what's unfair. |
| missy | posted 10-Feb-1998 4:38pm life can be good or it can be bad, its all about attitude and the way you handle situations. |
| booker | posted 12-Feb-1998 11:57pm bullcrap. If you are born sick and poor in some third world country, sold by your parents to a slave master who beats you up, and worked 18 hours a day chained to a factory machine, "attitude and the way you handle situations" ain't gonna get you too far. |
| mcarlos | posted 13-Feb-1998 2:57am life is. <- (period) ... it is a complex web of non-freedoms resolving into something that already exists embrionically. life is an unfolding. see the hopi conception of 'time' in whorf (yes i know he was supposedly disproven - he was just too early for postmodernism, which is also supposedly poppycock). |
| Artemis | posted 15-Feb-1998 9:13pm Life is unfair sometimes but it's also what you make of it. Why can't you pick more than one? |
| hunter | posted 16-Feb-1998 6:38pm steve stole my line, but I'll expand on it. Fair and unfair are human perspectives and values, they don't have anything to do with the underlying reality. And besides, wouldn't it suck if life were fair? Do you *deserve* a wonderful lover? Do you *deserve* to have a satisfying job? Do you *deserve* the food you eat every day? Does anyone *deserve* to starve, to die of crippling disease, to be raped? I'd say no to all of the above. It's not that life's unfair, it's that fair has nothing to do with it. |
| elijahblue | posted 17-Feb-1998 8:05pm It isn't really fair or unfair. The "you can do anything if you work hard enough" philosophy helps people to feel less nervous about their prospects, but it's not true. |
| Gamera | posted 3-Mar-1998 1:46am yes. I think life is.... exactly. |
| daver | posted 15-May-1998 12:25pm Completely indifferent to you or me... |
| jjg | posted 17-May-1998 4:27pm Life is neither fair nor unfair. Life is simply life. So just deal with it, you have little choice. |
| reality | posted 26-Jun-1998 7:59pm it is what you make of it. this is heavily influenced by where/how you are raised, your nature and the opportunies you have given and those that you make for yourself. |
