I have a fair amount of musical talent and nearly no visual artistic talent.

I reckon this rule often applies. However, in extreme cases, it is rubbish. Mendlessohn, the Romantic musical composer also painted pictures for his native Art Galleries

interesting... I don't actually find this claim to be unreasonable. I can think of several examples of people who seem to have one or the other, but not both. Well, I can think of a few exceptions.

I've composed & performed music and done rock & theatre lighting (which is a mostly visual art) on a semi-pro basis. My work now requires a lot of analysis, but I do a lot of my thinking on whiteboards. So I'd say I have both.

I can see some truth to this idea, though - it sounds like a variation on the left brain/right brain comparisons. When I've taken quizzes on left/right orientation I've ended up in the middle.

I'm not terribly accomplished in either, but I have some talent at both.

I enjoy a variety of non-musical arts, and am fairly adept at a couple. The only musical art I have had any success with is singing, though.

What means 'musical talent'? The ability to play music accurately? The ability to artistically express myself in music? The ability to appreciate and see depth in music?

While this is true in my case, I do know quite a few people that are talented in both.

I have no musical talent what so ever. Though I am not an artist in the sense Topper is an artist, I think of myself as being quite creative.

This is so true for me. Plenty of musical talent, but I can't draw or sculpt or anything like that.

I can carry a tune okay, and have a decent sense of rhythm, but I don't consider myself to have musical talent because I'm not musically creative. I have no visual artistic talent whatsoever. I'm creative with food, but I didn't count that as "artistic talent".

isn't music art?

I've noticed that a lot of people with very fine singing voices tend to be a little slow, while people who play a musical instrument are often very smart.

Me neither. My brother, good at both.

Milktree -- As I see it music is art when you are composing it. Playing music is more a skill.

Sorry but that explanation isn't enough for me - I have musical talent and writing talent, writing is an art but maybe (probably) not the type this question refers to. I have never tried pottery, I'm not too bad at clay sculpting (not too good either), I totally suck at painting and drawing :) (I have an eye for it, but I can't actually do it)

I played the saxophone from about grade 6 through the end of high school. I could have been much better if I had practiced.
I can't draw, but I have a decent imagination and I think I do well with stories.

Well, both or neither..I have never felt a stronger aptitude to one or the other. I can't sing terribly well but I can play an instrument..and I can do things like pottery but not painting.

It's true for me. I have natural abilities with music, but can't draw or do anything "artistic" at all.

Is it possible that some people tend to nurture their talents in one area and ignore the others, thereby letting them fizzle out, just because they're more interested in one thing than the other? with me I think maybe I got positive attention for tinkering on the piano as a small child, where maybe my drawings didn't get me any positive attention, so I never practiced drawing and never got good at it. MAYBE I could have done both, but we'll never know.
