Academic/linguistic; specifically Hebrew Bible/ancient Israel and associated languages. This is something I would love to do! An alum of my program who teaches at UCLA did this for the movie "Stigmata."

That must have been a cool experience for your friend. It must be great to be in a working environment where everyone needs to continuously soak your knowledge and to be so reliant upon the same.

Theoretically that's what it's like in a university, too!
I'm not sure how much time he really spent doing it. I get the feeling from most movies that it's not that much, considering how much they get wrong!

Haha. I know what you mean. A friend and I were watching "Sum of All Fears" and he was catching them left and right. He was saying pretty technical stuff like "that's wrong. ICBMs are better for distance and they will cover a wide range target too" and "no. The such-and-such plane doesn't load such-and-such missiles". Stuff like that. I told him he should be one of those consultants. Haha.

I wouldn't be interested. Besides, does it really matter if something is accurate or not? It's only TV.

I could see myself doing this as primarily a historical advisor covering aspects like costume, sets, hairstyles and such and keeping an eye out for anachronisms in dialogue. I would still need to do a little research probably, but that is one thing that I find annoying in a lot of historical films is that they very often get the furnishings and hairstyles way wrong!!!

My friend did something that's equivalent of SWAT training here in Canada, and he tells me he can't watch action movies anymore because they do so many things wrong.

You did not list news broadcasting. This involves electronic news gathering, editing, production, and then the broadcasting or transmitting for public consumption. This is what I do currently as an engineer, not as a consultant. I consider myself pretty good at it . Besides your basic canned news we also have some talk shows, and public service programs. It is pretty cool. But I assure you the glamor seen on tv does not exist on the back side of the camera. It is work like any other job.

The job I'm asking about is not one that is performed but one that is consulted to stay within the proper boundaries for portrayal. I think you're answering another question that asks, "What tasks could you perform for movies and television productions?" I admire your industry so I'm envious of you in any case.
