| thevelvetcure | posted 11-Oct-2004 12:44am Simple Pyramids of Giza...and the Great Wall of China which is ommitted.
There's actually two sets of wonders, these are of the 'modern' time, and another in which I forget. The 7 that you listed are of the ancient world |
| icurok | posted 11-Oct-2004 5:40am The Great Pyramid is the only wonder that remains.
The other 6 succumbed to various fates. Gradual decline and neglect, purposeful destruction by an invading force and natural disaster. |
| icurok | (reply to thevelvetcure) posted 11-Oct-2004 5:43am The Great Wall is not omitted. It was never on the list. The list was drawn up by the Greeks. Had they known it existed, it may have been 8 wonders. Had they known of Stone Henge's existence, it may have been 9. |
| thevelvetcure | (reply to icurok) posted 11-Oct-2004 6:00am We'll just put it this way, there's too many lists. Apparently there's 4 lists.
Ancient (the known world at the time to the Greeks) 'Ancient Expanded' - All civilization thus including The Wall, Stonehenge, etc Modern Natural |
| Biggles | posted 11-Oct-2004 6:29am Probably only the Great Pyramid? |
| icurok | (reply to thevelvetcure) posted 11-Oct-2004 6:44am There may be four categories, but other than the original Greek effort I don't think there's any definitive, authoritative or officially recognised list for any of the other three categories. I've seen nominations from the Hoover Dam to the microchip for modern wonders.
Seemingly, no one can agree. Perhaps because the idea of only 7 wonders is so restrictive. |
| bill | posted 11-Oct-2004 7:18am Of these, I wish the Colossus of Rhodes was still around. |
| Maarten | (reply to EyesOfCharisma) posted 11-Oct-2004 9:18am You have never heard of the pyramids in Egypt??? |
| EyesOfCharisma | (reply to Maarten) posted 11-Oct-2004 9:29am I have heard of pyramids...but nothing named Giza... |
| Maarten | (reply to EyesOfCharisma) posted 11-Oct-2004 9:57am OIC. Well, they are the same things. |
| EyesOfCharisma | (reply to Maarten) posted 11-Oct-2004 9:59am ya learn something new every day!!! |
| icurok | (reply to EyesOfCharisma) posted 11-Oct-2004 10:42am Giza isn't the name of the pyramid, it's the name of place (hence 'the Pyramid at Giza'). It's a small town on the other side of the River Nile from downtown Cairo and it's the site of all the major pharoah monuments.
Think of it like the Statue of Liberty. Everyone's heard of it, most people know it's in New York, but not everyone has heard of Ellis Island. |
| romkey | posted 11-Oct-2004 11:42am The Great Pyramid. I've been inside it. |
| caviartaste | posted 11-Oct-2004 12:34pm I would have to guess at least the Great Pyramid and the Lighthouse. I know the hanging gardens are long gone, and also the statue of Zeus. I don't know about the others. |
| Iseult | posted 11-Oct-2004 1:59pm I am sure about the Pyramid, and I think it's also Zeus at Olympus. I am sure the Lighthouse is gone. |
| Enheduanna | posted 11-Oct-2004 5:26pm Definitely the Pyramids. And at least the remains of the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, although I guess that doesn't really count as "standing." Definitely not the Hanging Gardens or the Colossus, and I think also the Lighthouse. I'm not sure about the Mausoleum and the Statue of Zeus. |
| southernyankee | posted 11-Oct-2004 7:52pm I am guessing all of htem except the Zeus statute. |
| dora | posted 12-Oct-2004 12:38pm The Pyramid.
I believe the rest is gone. The Pyramids are the oldest BTW and they're still standing. |
| thevelvetcure | (reply to dora) posted 12-Oct-2004 9:02pm Of course, it's a massive 'mound of stones', very intricately might I add, unlike stone sculptures and structures. |
