| thevelvetcure | posted 29-Sep-2004 12:58am I'm a two spacer. This actually started with me even when printing, and was solidified all the more when I took a mandatory typing course for school and learned on electronic typewriters. |
| gilibij | posted 29-Sep-2004 1:06am I usually do one, but if I'm sending it off and trying to look professional, I use two. |
| kirst | posted 29-Sep-2004 6:04am two |
| ROCKMAN | posted 29-Sep-2004 7:17am I almost always just put one. |
| icurok | posted 29-Sep-2004 7:26am Just the one. |
| iamdonte | posted 29-Sep-2004 7:39am I usually do two spaces....not sure why I got into that habit but I didn. |
| bill | posted 29-Sep-2004 8:18am two... even though much of the time HTML swallows the second space. |
| moviesnob | posted 29-Sep-2004 8:36am I almost always put two spaces. |

| juliw | posted 29-Sep-2004 9:39am Most of the time, I put two spaces, because that is the correct way. Sometimes, when chatting online with friends, or posting replies in Survey Central, I am a little sloppy with my grammar and punctuation. |

| Danger | posted 29-Sep-2004 11:12am I always put two. |
| judgescratch | posted 29-Sep-2004 12:02pm I always put two spaces. |
| Enheduanna | posted 29-Sep-2004 1:28pm Almost always two. That's what I was taught in high school, although I've heard that it's been changed to one. I've also noticed that SC always just makes however many spaces you have into what looks like one space. |
| Enheduanna | (reply to bill) posted 29-Sep-2004 1:30pm I didn't realize that was an HTML thing, since I almost never post things in HTML anywhere else! |
| leahdoll | posted 29-Sep-2004 2:07pm Two, but I have heard that the new, correct way is one space. |
| cerealkiller | posted 29-Sep-2004 2:57pm Been typing for over 30 years. It's always been two spaces after a period, and to me always will be regardless of these new-fangled fonts and computers. |
| bill | (reply to Enheduanna) posted 29-Sep-2004 3:03pm well, I guess it's a little more complicated with sites that let you post text... SC's program converts the text you enter to some degree. Like new-lines are converted to tags. But, I don't have it try to convert double-spaces or tabs for that matter (so they fall through and just get eaten by HTML interpretation). In HTML, all "white space" is converted to a single space, white space includes spaces, tabs, newlines, etc. Though, there are exceptions (HTML tags for pre-formated text).... sorry, I'm not sure exactly why I'm explaining this to you. |
| Enheduanna | (reply to bill) posted 29-Sep-2004 3:12pm You're an explainer!
I learned a little bit of HTML once several years ago, but I've forgotten most of it. Most of the academic webpage programs (like for course pages) now do all the formatting for you. Very handy. |
| caviartaste | posted 29-Sep-2004 4:51pm I put 2 spaces |
| ASB | posted 29-Sep-2004 11:39pm huh? |
| thevelvetcure | (reply to bill) posted 30-Sep-2004 4:35am you're explaining it to Enheduanna, so I can eaves drop. Now, knowing that bit of info, I can hopefully find the tags to manipulate the white spaces that get eaten |
| bill | (reply to thevelvetcure) posted 30-Sep-2004 8:16am I think I have a *space* tag you can use to space things out. So, you could add one after each sentence, but it seems like a bit of a pain in the butt to do that (also, it's ugly) |
| bill | (reply to thevelvetcure) posted 30-Sep-2004 8:17am It would look like this (note spacing after sentences):
I do not like green eggs and ham. Sam, Sam, I am. I will not eat them on a bus. |
| Zang | posted 30-Sep-2004 10:54am Just the one. Always. |
| thevelvetcure | (reply to bill) posted 30-Sep-2004 11:40am Yeah, so it looks normal Honestly bill, I most likely wouldn't use it for this site, but for another site (game) and I would use the spacings for helping me make lists. I can't tell you how horrid this looks when you spend the time to tab everything out on MS Word to get it presentable...Here's a sample, I'm going to assume it appears in the same manner. Capo nevermind 5 Capo kreivas 4 MM MikasMegstaPica 11 MM TangO 5 |
| msgman | posted 30-Sep-2004 2:18pm I use one space. The two-space convention only applies to monospaced fonts (like old typewriters); it's never been correct for proportional spacing (where the kerning takes care of things for you). |
| bill | (reply to thevelvetcure) posted 30-Sep-2004 2:38pm Oh, with things that are spaced-out like that, you can use {pre} tags around it like this:
|
| thevelvetcure | (reply to bill) posted 30-Sep-2004 5:00pm So it would be ...
Capo { pre}nevermind{ pre} { pre}5{ pre} without the spaces? Capo nevermind 5 |
| thevelvetcure | (reply to bill) posted 30-Sep-2004 5:01pm |
| bill | (reply to thevelvetcure) posted 1-Oct-2004 8:47am do a quoted reply to my message to see how it's done... basically you put pre tags around the whole section... yes, it tends to block the section out with new lines as well. |

| mitachoo | posted 2-Oct-2004 11:23pm I did one space for years until I got reamed by a secretary at a place I worked at. |
| Biggles | posted 3-Oct-2004 12:08pm One. Like this. Do you see? |
| Iseult | posted 7-Oct-2004 1:33am I was taught to put two. I set my spellcheck to two, also. |
| ElvisFan67 | posted 8-Oct-2004 11:17pm I've learned in typing class back in high school that you should always put two spaces after the end of a sentence--if that's what you mean. |
