I'm a two spacer. This actually started with me even when printing, and was solidified all the more when I took a mandatory typing course for school and learned on electronic typewriters.

I usually do one, but if I'm sending it off and trying to look professional, I use two.

two... even though much of the time HTML swallows the second space.

Most of the time, I put two spaces, because that is the correct way. Sometimes, when chatting online with friends, or posting replies in Survey Central, I am a little sloppy with my grammar and punctuation.

Almost always two. That's what I was taught in high school, although I've heard that it's been changed to one. I've also noticed that SC always just makes however many spaces you have into what looks like one space.

I didn't realize that was an HTML thing, since I almost never post things in HTML anywhere else!

Two, but I have heard that the new, correct way is one space.

Been typing for over 30 years. It's always been two spaces after a period, and to me always will be regardless of these new-fangled fonts and computers.

well, I guess it's a little more complicated with sites that let you post text... SC's program converts the text you enter to some degree. Like new-lines are converted to
tags. But, I don't have it try to convert double-spaces or tabs for that matter (so they fall through and just get eaten by HTML interpretation). In HTML, all "white space" is converted to a single space, white space includes spaces, tabs, newlines, etc. Though, there are exceptions (HTML tags for pre-formated text).... sorry, I'm not sure exactly why I'm explaining this to you.

You're an explainer!
I learned a little bit of HTML once several years ago, but I've forgotten most of it. Most of the academic webpage programs (like for course pages) now do all the formatting for you. Very handy.

you're explaining it to Enheduanna, so I can eaves drop. Now, knowing that bit of info, I can hopefully find the tags to manipulate the white spaces that get eaten * angry *

I think I have a *space* tag you can use to space things out. So, you could add one after each sentence, but it seems like a bit of a pain in the butt to do that (also, it's ugly)

It would look like this (note spacing after sentences):

I do not like green eggs and ham.   Sam, Sam, I am.   I will not eat them on a bus.

Yeah, so it looks normal * grin *

Honestly bill, I most likely wouldn't use it for this site, but for another site (game) and I would use the spacings for helping me make lists. I can't tell you how horrid this looks when you spend the time to tab everything out on MS Word to get it presentable...Here's a sample, I'm going to assume it appears in the same manner.

I use one space. The two-space convention only applies to monospaced fonts (like old typewriters); it's never been correct for proportional spacing (where the kerning takes care of things for you).

Oh, with things that are spaced-out like that, you can use {pre} tags around it like this:

Capo nevermind 5
Capo kreivas 4
MM MikasMegstaPica 11
MM TangO 5
thevelvetcure
(reply to bill) posted 30-Sep-2004 5:00pm
So it would be ...

Capo { pre}nevermind{ pre} { pre}5{ pre}
without the spaces?
Capo
nevermind
5

do a quoted reply to my message to see how it's done... basically you put pre tags around the whole section... yes, it tends to block the section out with new lines as well.

I've learned in typing class back in high school that you should always put two spaces after the end of a sentence--if that's what you mean. * smile *
