| thevelvetcure | posted 28-Sep-2004 3:13pm ...eventually it does, though it takes the same exact time as if the pot is not watched. Time is relative, if you're doing nothing, then the seconds crawl. |
| dora | posted 28-Sep-2004 3:42pm ohhh yes |
| Enheduanna | posted 28-Sep-2004 4:09pm No; physics always prevails. |
| judgescratch | posted 28-Sep-2004 5:14pm Yup. |
| Zang | posted 28-Sep-2004 5:24pm No. I tested that theory and the watched pot does boil. In fact using identical pots of water I compared to see if the watched pot even took longer to come to a boil, and the results were the same; both pots boiled at precisely the same time. It was around this time that I decided that my mother was completely full of crap! |
| MacGregor | posted 28-Sep-2004 5:34pm Yes. And in my case, the unwatched pot doesn't boil either because my stove is very old and doesn't heat very well. |
| ASB | posted 28-Sep-2004 7:29pm It seems like it will take forever but it does boil as long as you put enough heat under it. |
| moonstone | posted 28-Sep-2004 8:25pm no |
| EyesOfCharisma | posted 28-Sep-2004 11:07pm true.....no, because it will eventually boil... |

| thevelvetcure | (reply to EyesOfCharisma) posted 29-Sep-2004 8:14am what if your watching it so intently that you acidentaly blow out the flame...or even forget to turn on the burner...will it still boil? |
| bill | posted 29-Sep-2004 8:25am The expression is not meant to be taken literally. It's hyperbole; "never" is an exaggeration to make the point that it seems to take forever when you do nothing but wait for it. |
| icurok | posted 29-Sep-2004 8:47am No, it isn't true. It's the same as the 'statistic' about married men living longer. They don't. It just *feels* longer. |

| Zang | (reply to icurok) posted 30-Sep-2004 10:28am Actually that one is true. I think it has something to do with the typical bachelor's diet of lager and greasy take-away...and their tendency to engage in dangerous sports and diversions followed by the avoidance of medical care. |
