If you believed professional athletes salaries are too high, why would you think this?

The reason they get paid so much is because advertiser pay for time and billboards there, (because so many people watch it) and because so many people buy tickets to see the games. If sports weren't very popular, athletes wouldn't get paid so much.

Because they are paid better than the average school teacher who not only helps form the minds of our children, which are our future, but many professional athletes are poor role models as well.

Because they are way, way out of proportion with non-professional athletes' salaries.

No person deserves multi-million dollars a year to play stupid games. The President of the United States only makes $400,000 a year, the most powerful position in the world.
I argued this with a sports professional once. He said they were "entertainers" in reality and should make just as much as other entertainers and movie stars do.

Other entertainers and movie stars get paid that much because people viewers and advertisers pay for it. I personally think sports and entertainment are highly over-rated. If people paid more attention to things that are more important, sports and entertainment figures wouldn't be paid so much.

You've got it so right!
Teachers don't generate revenue. Nobody buys tickets to watch someone teach a class. Nobody buys a billboard saying "Watch Mrs. Smith teach Billy how to read" oooh, exciting!

And teachers also don't bring more revenue to a city with the hundreds of people coming to watch them.

I would think it because they get paid more than doctors, nurses, paramedics, etc. despite providing entertainment rather than a vital service.

Because they don't really do anything. But then again, actors and directors, and producers, and managers, and those bloody CEO don't do all that much either.

no, they are worth whatever the owners are willing to pay them and the public is willing to tolerate!! obviously that is A LOT!!
otherwise we would boycott going to see these professional sports, the owners would lose money and the salaries would possibly come down. we as a viewing public seem to be gluttons for punishment, even after strikes we run back for more!
all just my opinion of course!!

they wouldn't make so much if people didn't flock to see them........... it is true!! the demand is there. if we as a viewing public didn't run to see them, even after a strike(when they don't care about their viewing public), the fans rush back...... crazy!!! it also shows in the billions that cities are willing to pay to build a stadium at almost no cost to the owner of the team( but just to hold on to a team). over time the cost to cities is amazing, but the citizens don't recognize it!! they just want the team to stay!!!! i live in jacksonville, florida and the people here would do anything to hold onto the jaguars, it is crazy!!! and now we spent millions to renovate the stadium to get the superbowl here................ the city will make money but not everything they have spent over the years(again all at no cost to the owner). also, we no longer hold stadium concerts in the stadium because when U2 was here about 5 yrs ago, it rained and the field had some damage and the owner went crazy.......so no more concerts because the owner said(you know, the concerts would help make up some of the city's cost!!!)

you are right in a monetary sense.................. they do bring in a revenue for families and for the country as far as having an educated ,intelligent and employable population but it is all about the money to everyone, even many parents!!!
teachers should be some of our highest paid workers but???
it's like working in the hospital, nurses aren't well paid but the hospital would come to a stand still if they walked out but their work isn't billable, they don't pay for themselves in billing so they aren't paid well. their work is some of the most important in the hospital but because you can show it on a diagram, chart or on a bill...................... crazy!!!

I'm concerned that one two scores.

Players should be picked to join clubs on talent and not on who can afford that talent.
Soccer (my thought-pattern) worries me because clubs like Man Utd. have lost their soul.

Also, it means only the well off can do football matches - its no longer a working man's game..

Finally, there are people doing less well off - starving even. Lets spead it about a bit.

it depends on where you work(city wise) but comparatively in the hospital, money wise they are medium to low on the scale and hospitals will treat nurses and environmental staff(the cleaning staff) like they are replaceable, when the hospital would grind to a halt without them!

I have a rule on what salary is too high. Take the median income for the nation, multiply it by ten, and whichever citizen makes more than that has too high of a salary. I would never say one's life is worth ten times more than the rest, why should money be so different? Sports, business, entertainment, whatever, it's all the same to me. What I'd like to see is prices drop or employee salaries raise. This is by no means a rule I expect the world to embrace. I don't hate the rich for being rich, I just think they should spread the wealth.

I tend to agree with the way they might treat them sometimes at some places. I think she ended up in a good place and seems to like it, so she might be in the minority.

So are many teachers.
In about 13 years of schooling you will probably find one or two good teachers.

(reply to dora) posted 23-Sep-2004 6:44pm

I was lucky to have several really good teachers throughout my schooling. Sadly, one of the best and my personal favorite teacher no longer teaches. He went into politics and for awhile was a local mayor. He told me that he made more money which he needed to send his children through college.

Of course they are too high. The players salaries have ruined the integrity of the sport, and turned it into a business.

I think this simply because they are. If you're asking WHY they are too high, I would say those in control don't have their priorities straight. Yeah, pay the athlete, but most of that money can go somewhere else, like education.

Because people buy the tickets & owners pay the salaries.
