Considering I haven't watched Formula One racing since the late 80's or the early 90's, I'm going on name recognition alone...Michael Schumacher |

Nope, I remember this from my dad telling me when I was little.
NASCAR - the cars were originally stock cars, like those we purchase off of a lot, with only extra safety features added. In the modern day, they only resemble normal cars.
Indy - They look like jets and only make left turns, racing on ovals only
Formula 1 - Their appearance is that of the Indy car, but they often race on street courses, making left and right turns |

Ooookkkk. Ironically, I'm not a racing fan. Even though my grandpa owns a race track in my hometown and raced cars for a long time. |

Kimi Raikkonen! THE best driver in F1. McLaren is the team I support. |

I wouldn't have called myself a fan, but as I imagine, most guys watched it when they were wee ones. |

I hate Formula One. Any sport that has a driver called "Jenson Button" *has* to be evil! |
icurok | | (reply to Biggles) posted 12-Sep-2004 7:38am |
I hate Formula 1 too since the commentary for every race always seems to sound something like this....
".... and It's Schumacher! Closely followed by Barrichello! Followed by Fisichella, Alonso and Button! Schumacher's held it all the way... it's veeeery difficult to see how he can lose the lead now. Ye-no! Yes! I'm righ-. Yes! I was right, he's *still* in the lead, Schumacher is *still* in the lead.. followed by Barrichello, Fisichella, Alonso and Button... and some others.. behind them... er some... foreign .. but quite good .. racing drivers... er.. following him.. amazing... er.. but here comes.. Schumacher! He's *still* in the lead, with Barrichello and Fisichella and Alo- just like before! .. it's the *same* row and Schumacher looks like he's going to win... through the chicane.. and now all the others.. through the chicane.... amazing.... Shumacher! Barrichello! Fisi- just the same ! Amazing.... through the chicane... through the chicane.... amazing... " |

Yes, that's really annoying. Also the droning sound constantly for hours on end - it drives me mad. If you watch it, might as well have it muted. My grandfather likes it (or used to when he could see better pre-stroke) but didn't have great hearing so would turn it all the way up. I always used to go home with a headache after spending the day there. |
icurok | | (reply to Biggles) posted 12-Sep-2004 8:23am |
My dad likes it, but not as much as he used to. He prefers rally car racing since the lead swaps over more often and drivers are less bothered about nudging each other on corners. |
| Biggles | | (reply to icurok) posted 12-Sep-2004 8:26am |
Rally car racing looks like more fun, and the spectators often seem to get sprayed with mud |
icurok | | (reply to Biggles) posted 12-Sep-2004 8:34am |
Sorry, I meant Touring Car. The one where they're all driving souped up Alfa Romeos and Cosworths round Donnington.
Although he likes Rally car aswell. I got him the latest Colin McRae game for his PC and he loves it! |

I used to like driving games on the Amiga (Lotus something was the one I played most) and even on the Spectrum - Turbo Esprit! |
icurok | | (reply to Biggles) posted 12-Sep-2004 8:48am |
Lotus Espirit Turbo Challenge.... bloody hell! That's a blast from the past. My Amiga is up my parent's loft! I wonder if it still work? |
| Biggles | | (reply to icurok) posted 12-Sep-2004 11:56am |
We had our Amiga in the area under our house (not really a cellar as it's really just a space with no inside access) which is damp and dirty and it still works fine. We pull it out from time to time - the Spectrum too, although not all the keys work anymore |
| uible | | posted 13-Sep-2004 8:04am |
I've heard of Jaguar, Renault, Toyota and Ferrari, but none of the drivers. No favourite drivers, don't follow FO don't really know of its existence at all. |
icurok | | (reply to Biggles) posted 13-Sep-2004 9:00am |
We didn't have a Spectrum or a Commodore 64 (although my best mate did and we used to take turns playing Manic Miner).
We skipped straight to the Amiga from the old Atari system (the one with TV remote like controllers with number pads and analogue sticks and chunky black telephone wire linking it to the machine, which had aluminium and a faux-wood trim).
One of the cartridges we had was called something like "Olympic Challenge". It was a bit of a rip-off really, because you could only play hockey, tennis, table tennis, squash, badminton or any other sport which the programmers could write a 'slightly' different version of Pong. Oh, the 70s! |
| Biggles | | (reply to icurok) posted 13-Sep-2004 9:30am |
Ah, Manic Miner - what a game! I get it confused with Jetset Willy though. We were slightly too young to have ever had the Atari (my older brother is only 2 years older than me) but we had the Spectrum as long as I can remember. I used to like the text adventures, although there was one that insisted on calling me "Wanker" (As in, "what are you going to do now, wanker?") much to my bemusement and my mother's mirth.
Ah, the 80s more like!
I've seen the Atari Pong game though...it actually looks like fun to say I spent hours playing similar games even on our PC! It's like that Halloween episode of The Simpsons where the aliens are really proud to have invented Pong |

My mate had the text adventure for LOTR on his Commodore. You're always at the mercy of the primitive parser though, so I don't think I've ever completed one. There tends to be a point in any game where something like this happens:
> You see a ship docked in the harbour
GET ON SHIP
>What?
WALK ON SHIP
> What?
ENTER SHIP
>You are on the deck of a ship
SET SAIL
>That doesn't work
SAIL SHIP
>What do you mean to "SAIL SHIP"?
WEIGH ANCHOR
> About 500lbs I'd say
FUDGE OFF AND DIE
> I don't know how to do that.
I liked them better when it started to get point and click like Monkey Island. |
| Biggles | | (reply to icurok) posted 13-Sep-2004 10:18am |
I love point and click games, I've played most of the best ones but I'm always on the look out for more. I tend to have to buy them a few years after they come out because £30 is really too much for a game that isn't very replayable. Monkey Islands one and two are great and I really enjoy the Broken Sword games, even though the critics were really snooty about them at first. Beneath a Steel Sky is probably my all time favourite but the Blade Runner game is just so amazing that my jaw drops every time I start playing it. It really creates the atmosphere of the film *and* there are about 6 different endings determined by the choices you make throughout the game. I've only completed it once and it wasn't the happiest possible ending, though perhaps the closest to the film (directors cut). I also like the really cheesy, bad ones like Hand of Fate and Flight of the Amazon Queen. Sheesh, it would be really nice if a new adventure game came out, nice and cheap! I have The Longest Journey waiting for me at home. I bought it at Easter but it won't run on my laptop. Should run on my brother's fancy new computer though |
icurok | | (reply to Biggles) posted 13-Sep-2004 11:09am |
If you're looking at satisfying your fix before you get back home, there are a lot of web-based adventure games around now.
Obviously their scale is not as large as PC games, but they're a nice distraction. Sometimes they'll end with a "To Be Continued" and get new chapters added over time.
I can recommend Samorost, MOTAS, A Case of the Crabs, The Crimson/Viridian Room, The Dead Case and Exmortis (all of which should be googleable if you want to find them). |
| Biggles | | (reply to icurok) posted 13-Sep-2004 1:32pm |
Ooh, I've played most of those, but not The Dead Case or Exmortis. There's a new version of the Crimson Room out now - The Blue Chamber which isn't as buggy (ie having to click the exact right pixel) but there isn't much to it either.
Beneath a Steel Sky, Flight of the Amazon Queen and Lure of the Temptress are all available online now too. If you haven't seen Beneath a Steel Sky then that is definitely worth downloading! http://www.revolution.co.uk/_display.php?id=16 |
