Generally, I don't. I might watch an important England football game because there's a sense of the whole country watching it - everyone with their little flags on their cars and hanging out of their windows *smile* I like that from time to time.

I watched some of the Olympics through the BBC website because I was ill and not up to doing much. I enjoyed watching Amir Khan box, but I missed the final. I hate knockout boxing, but doing it for points seemed a lot better.

I watch sport during the Olympic Games for the spectacle of it and because I like to support team GB.
I watch football because I like the game and enjoy watching talented players playing it. I also support my local team (Stoke City FC).

Perhaps Leeds ought to 'win' a prize if they don't go bankrupt this season *wink* . By the way, are you happy for Alan Smith and the way he's playing now he's at Man Utd? Do you think he should've stayed?

I don't. I avoid it like the plague. Unless it's gymnastics, it's a waste of air time.

Conversely I dislike Gymnastics (although I wouldn't go as far as saying it's "a waste of air time"), since the winner has to be subjectively determined by a panel of 'experts' whose opinions often differ wildly from each other!
I want to see the ball cross the line. I want to see a person lift the most weight. I want to see a person reach the finishing line first.

To make gymnastics objective, you would have to set up motion capture cameras around the apparatus that could recognise different move sets and compare them to what they should look like when done perfectly. Similar technology to that used to create Gollum for the Lord of the Rings. Competitors would then be scored on how much they deviated from perfect line and form whilst performing each move.
Obviously it's difficult to program a computer to rate artistic interpretation, so you probably couldn't use it for something like the floor exercise. But you don't do the parallel bars to music.

For everything except Hockey I watch it because someone else has it on TV and I happen to be in the room.

Oh, that guy's so hot!

I think anyone who leaves any of my favourite teams is a bloody traitor (although he did get app 7m ... opposed to what Rooney got... something around 20m), but it IS Premiership. I think he's gonna do fine.
I won't be able to watch it anymore once I go to uni. I'll have to rely on my soccer news from BBC.com That sucks. But, on the other hand, I'll be playing soccer myself.

I don't usually, but if I do, it's for the team where I went to colllege, or I attend a game where I went to school.....My husband is for my schools rivalry which makes things interesting during football season. Alabama is the worst state in the nation for football rivalry. He watches it alot and I usually try to find something else to do so that we don't have "issues" about it. It's almost worse than religion here. Once you cross the Alabama state line - you have to "declare"....so it's been said!!

I generally don't. It's a rare time when I watch sports and then it's usually something like floor gymnastics or diving.

I watch football, basketball, baseball and hockey, mainly because it's fun. Do I need a better reason than that? Also, whether you're participating or just watching, sports has a way of bringing people together.

My sister likes him too *smile*

The difference between him and Rooney is mostly down to circumstances and prestige. Rooney played and scored in Euro 2004 and was named by UEFA in the tournament All-Star team. Everton could effectively name their price. Leeds are massively in debt and under pressure to offload their best players at below their true value just to get the wage bill down.
I can recommend the football pages on the Guardian website if you want another source of football news.
By the way, what position do you prefer to play in?

I prefer playing defense, although I should be a golly since I'm tall. But I figured out since I'm not going to be playing for any profit or anything like it, I might as well play what I like. I think I'll do fine as a left back.
icurok
(reply to Iseult) posted 3-Sep-2004 5:25pm

I tend to play at right back. But then I'm not left handed or ambidextrous so I couldn't hit a barn door with my left foot!

And I think you meant goalie. Golly is an expression of mild surprise like gosh or crikey (one of those words that hasn't actually been used for 50 years and is only kept alive by Hugh Grant).

I don't much. My preference would be to play myself, not that I do that a lot. I don't watch television, and on those rare occasions when I do, sports isn't a big favourite, although I did enjoy seeing some of the Olympics. In terms of watching sports, I'd most enjoy seeing someone I know playing than watching professionals on TV.

Because I support a country, team, or individual. I don't watch much sports, though--mostly Olympics and the occasional World Series or Super Bowl, depending on who's playing.

The ONLY time I watch sports on television is when someone else is watching it and it would be beyond rude to leave or switch the channel (SO does watch some sports). The last time I saw a sporting event in person was . . . about 16 years ago - I went with some friends to a minor league baseball game, it was more of a party that happened to be in a stadium. The time before that was probably about 16 years before that.

I don't watch sports.
