Name as many UK counties as you can!

Most people seem to have done very well naming US states in this survey. It's time for a bigger challenge!

This includes counties in England (47), Scotland (32), Wales (22) and Northern Ireland (6).

Devonshire, Shropshire...OK, that's all I can think of for England. For Scotland, I have no idea. Wales I also have no idea--the names are probably like Chlydhlgieylchys (pronounced "Cull") or something. Ireland there's Ulster (maybe?) and...um...OK, I have no idea here either.

Two. Hampshire because I've heard that one on TV. And Kent, because that's the same county I live in here in Michigan and for some reason that stuck. That's about it! I should have studied!!!

N-Ireland: I am sure of: Armagh, Fermanagh, Derry, Down, Tyrone and Antrim.

Cymru/Wales: I am sure of: Cardiff and Conwy. I know these because I have been there. Can't think of any other. Probably Llanfairpwlltychogogoch as well? *smile*

Scotland: I am sure of: Fife and Inverness.
I know these because they are football clubs as well.
Others maybe: Glasgow, Edinburgh... or are they just cities? The Shetlands perhaps?

England: I am sure of: Yorkshire, Essex, Middlesex, Sussex, Lancashire, Isle of Man, Cornwall, Nottingham and Kent.
Others maybe: Greater London, Guernsey, Jersey, Isle of Wight.

Ok, you asked for it!

Let's start off with the easiest. The 6 Ulster counties that make up Northern Ireland are:

County Antrim, Country Armagh, County Down, County Fermanagh, County Londonderry (not Derry, which is the official name of the council) and County Tyrone.

(County Cavan, County Donegal and County Monaghan are part of Ulster, but are actually in Eire)

They changed Wales from 8 counties to 22 recently. The 8 used to be:

Gwynedd, Gwent, Clwyd, Powys, Dyfedd, Mid Glamorgan, West Glamorgan and South Glamorgan.

I'm not sure which of these still exist. But I'm pretty sure that at least some of them have been split up into Anglesey, Monmouthshire, Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire and a whole bunch of others.

Onto England which should be the easiest for me.
Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, Cheshire, Cornwall, Cumbria, Derbyshire, Devon, Dorset, East Riding of Yorkshire, East Sussex, Essex, Gloucestershire, Greater London, Greater Manchester, Hampshire, Herefordshire, Hertfordshire, Isle of Wight, Kent, Lancashire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Merseyside, Norfolk, Northamptonshire, Northumberland, North Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Rutland, Shropshire, Somerset, South Yorkshire, Staffordshire <-- me, Suffolk, Surrey, Warwickshire, West Midlands, West Sussex, West Yorkshire, Wiltshire, Worcestershire. That's 44.

And Scotland is a tough one too.
Midlothian, West Lothian, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dumfries and Galloway, Highlands, Aberdeenshire, Perth and Kinross, Lanarkshire, Shetlands, Orkneys, Dumbartonshire, Angus, Fife, Borders, Stirling, Dundee, Falkirk.. 18.

England: Country Durham, Northumberland, Humberside, South Yorkshire, North Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, East Riding of Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Leicestershire, Lancashire, Greater Manchester, Kent, Dover, Devon, Cornwall, Somerset, Essex, Staffordshire, Shropshire, Cumbria, Oxfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Derbyshire, Cheshire, Nottinghamshire, Wessex (? I don't think that exists anymore), Northamptonshire, Norfolk, Gloucestershire, Worcestershire (that must be made up!) , London (???), Greater London (??????)

N.Ireland: (I won't get any of these - I get counties of Ireland mixed up with NI) Antrim,

Wales: Anglesey, Gwynnned, Ceredignon (that might be a town), Powys (I think that's just Welsh for Wales), there's another one starting with C....

Scotland: I have no idea.

OK, so this is my survey and I'm not very good at this!

Rutland's been a county for 100s of years, but it was absorbed into Leicestershire in the 1970s. Growing up I hadn't really heard of it, except for geographical references like Rutland Water and cultural references like Eric Idle's Rutland Weekend Television. But I remember when they reinstated it's county status in the 90s. It was really big deal for the locals, even though its barely over 150sq miles. Balmoral's back garden is probably bigger than that!

The Northeast of England is probably the area I know the least about as I've never been, so although I'm kicking myself for missing Durham, I'm not that surprised. I was nearly going to say Cleveland.

Westmorland is one of the three areas that make up the county of Cumbria. The other two are Cumberland (like the sausage) and Furness (which is quite possibly the most depressingly bleak area in all of England). Think Flint, Michigan.
Westmorland is by contrast really nice, as it forms most of the Lake District and is the most mountainous region in England.
One of the biggest towns in Westmorland is Kendall, which has a mint cake named after it that apparently rock climbers use as a snackfood (as it's practically 100% sugar). Given it's remote location, it's also the type of place where when you walk into a newsagent in the high street, Cosmopolitan magazine is on the top shelf. They don't have multiple orgasms in Kendall.
There's also a hospital called Westmorland General Hospital. I know this because I was once rushed there after having a massive asthma attack whilst staying at a friend's rented farmhouse (which was huge and had no central heating). God bless the NHS *smile* .

I had two exams and was really worried about one and less about the other so I focused my revision on the one that scared me. Had the effect of letting me do much better than expected on the hard one and worse than I hoped for on the easier one! It balances out ok, but I shall have to work hard next year so that I don't lose out on the degree classification that I want. My average for this year was 62% (56% and 68%) and I need 60%+ overall at the end of my degree to get a 2:1 (the second highest).
