Not till now.
It's not much of a theory.
It doesn't propose any reason that olive oil might be good and other vegetable oils bad.
The article doesn't discuss at all why there would be problems processing some oils and not others.
The article doesn't discuss at all any other factors. How much oil are the affected people consuming? Is it hydrogenated? Is their trans- intact too high? Is their omega-3/omega-6 balance out of whack?
The article doesn't give any reason to support this claim other than the word of very concerned Dr. Beaumont. |

Until I see more proof that this is true, I plan to make no changes as to oils in my diet. One study does not a fact make. |

I already use olive oil (evo) primarily, so yay, I guess I wont go blind.
I use evo because it's suppose to be healthier, but at the moment, I'm forgetting why exactly.
Frankly, I find the way this scientific studies are presented in the media to be unhelpful... are we expected to change everytime we read one of these things? |

no, i haven't heard of this.
but i can assume that it's caused from all that scary hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated stuff |

yeah....
like the whole debate on eggs
on year they say, "EAT EGGS". then the next year they say, "don't ever eat eggs!". and then the next year, they say, "EAT EGGS".
i just don't get it. |

Don't even get me started on margarine vs. butter... |

I'd never heard it before. I'm not inclined to believe it. |

Not until I saw this survey in qualification. I think it would be more accurate to say that a study revealed a correlation between the consumption of certain types of cooking oils and the incidence of a particular condition which can result in blindness. I'm usually pretty skeptical about such things. If that were the case, there should be a hell of a lot more blind people in the world. |

As pointed out in the article vegetable oil is in many types of food, so I think it's unlikely that the solution is that simple. They also makes a big mixup in the article and says that margarine and vegetable oil is the same. I'm quite sceptical of this type of alarms. |

I almost always use olive oil anyways. |

I have read it now. It seems to me that nothing has yet been conclusively shown. If it is, I might consider changing my diet. |

Macular degeneration in countries that do not use vegetable oils is lower than in countries that do. |
moviesnob | | posted 17-Aug-2004 1:18pm |
I am now aware, but it's not changing anything. |

It seems to be a very limited study. I'll reserve judgement and any plans to change my cooking oil until I get more conclusive proof. It seems to be that this is a lot like the butter vs margarine arguments that have been going on for years. People were told to switch to margarine, which was bad advice because it's trans fats are far worse for you than butter's saturated fats. Frankly, I'm getting tired of all the misinformation and scare tactics that these "scientists" keep putting out. |
