I find the idea of youth rugby repellant in the first place. It's a dangerous sport and if you don't want to run the risk of your child getting seriously hurt, encourage them to participate in another activity! |

Yes, but with people his size.

I don't follow rugby--I'm not European. Sorry. |

They should really go by weight. It's obvious that Nigel (going by the photo in the article) is considerably taller and heavier than those of his age on his current team. BTW-how tall in feet and inches is 1.73m? He should definitely be allowed to play, but I don't think it's right to place him with older boys who would probably have more advanced playing skills and be advanced more emotionally. He is, after all, still just an 11 year old despite his size and would probably be a lot happier playing with boys whose skill/emotional levels are similar. |

Sure, if Nigel wants to play rugby, let Nigel play rugby. |

He should try Ballet |

let him play. sports always get ruined when more petty rules are added. |

Yes, but not against children so much smaller than him. If he won't play against boys his own size then he shouldn't be able to play. Perhaps he should take up a non-contact sport like football for a while? |

Rugby's really not very dangerous. You might think it would be more dangerous than American football because they don't wear padding but it's actually less so for precisely that reason. No padding means they weigh less, don't have hard metal parts to smack into people and if you tackle too hard it hurts you as well as your opponent. Plus, it's a "gentlemen's game" and the rules prohibit certain kinds of tackle that are likely to cause injury. Cauliflower ears seem to be common and the occasional broken nose but anything worse than that is very rare. My dad bent his nose out of shape playing rugby as a boy. I wouldn't let a child of mine play American Football or ice hockey because they're such vicious, violent, dangerous sports. But rugby? Run off and play dear...! |

I guess my only personal (not even that, but..) experience with it was seeing my friend naked a few weeks after she had joined her college rugby team. I've never seen colors like that on a human body, before or since! Of course I wouldn't be big on my children playing rough contact sports of any kind. |

Ah, it'll make you a man Never a convincing argument I think! Dinnerladies used to tell me I should eat my crusts because it would put hairs on my chest! Needless to say, my crusts always went to the ducks... |

He should be upgraded to the over 11's. Maybe they need to change their category to be much like boxing. |

We're only making plans for Nigel.
We only want what's best for him.
If he's 11, then he probably shouldn't be in the under-11 league. Let him play with the big boys if he wants to play. |

You don't have to be European. Almost the whole world plays rugby. |

I know. Here in the U.S., it's called football. But I don't know if the game is played quite the same over there, but I love it here--it's one of my favorite sports.
But if you really want an answer, I don't see why Nigel shouldn't be allowed to play. |

I'm supposed to care if a kid plays rugby on the other side of the planet?!! I don't think so! |
| leahdoll | | posted 14-Jun-2004 1:20pm |
Nigel should play but with a team of older boys closer to his weight. |
| moonstone | | posted 25-Jun-2004 3:10pm |
Rugby is all about getting hurt. The other kids just better toughen up if they're playing against Nigel! |
| Biggles | | (reply to moonstone) posted 25-Jun-2004 7:14pm |
It's really, really not. It's about skill and weaving and running and passing just as they're about to catch you. People who play rugby properly don't really get hurt very much. |

I was sort of kidding...my brother plays rugby...and my cousin does too. |
