| Enheduanna | posted 7-Jun-2004 9:27pm 70? On average? It really depends on the person and their physical condition. |
| southernyankee | posted 7-Jun-2004 9:40pm 75 is my best guess. But consider that everyone is different, and that people are living longer these days, by the time I get that age, this wont apply to me.
unless off course I keep eating the same crap I am eating right now |
| darkshadowsseeker | posted 7-Jun-2004 10:12pm Your as young or as old as you feel. To me "elderly" is a relative term. |
| iamdonte | posted 7-Jun-2004 10:29pm I don't relate it to a chronological age...I think elderly is when you are at that age where taking care of your needs such as cooking, cleaning, driving, walking (without falling), making decisions, etc becomes difficult or weakened. |
| BerrieGrrl | posted 7-Jun-2004 11:40pm i don't think of an age, just when one's only topic of discussion entails complaining about all their aches and pains |
| heyzeus1 | posted 8-Jun-2004 1:02am when it is too painful to move
and you have an earhorn and say 'eeeh?' a lot |
| heyzeus1 | (reply to darkshadowsseeker) posted 8-Jun-2004 1:03am thats sounds like something an elderly person would say! |
| dora | posted 8-Jun-2004 1:26am 65.
|
| dora | posted 8-Jun-2004 1:26am but if you're a rock star or something then about 70-75.

| thevelvetcure | posted 8-Jun-2004 6:52am elderly is almost senile...which occurs at different ages for everyone |
| moonstone | posted 8-Jun-2004 8:59am Somewhere around 65-70 maybe? |
| skylark | posted 8-Jun-2004 9:31am I could say it begins somewhere between 75 and 80 years BUT I still don't think "elderly" can be defined based on peoples' age only. I've met and known really bright and agile older people whom I could have believed to be decades younger than their actual physical age. And then, some people are just the opposite. |
| Galomorro | posted 8-Jun-2004 9:43am "Elderly" is not something I relate to chronological age. There are people over 65 who regularly jog, ride bicycles, hike, etc. who don't "act their age" or sometimes even look it. Some people will never feel "old." "Old" is a state of mind as well as physically. Why "act your age?" -- that is an old-fashioned idea -- in old movies, say, of older women wearing "sensible shoes" and long dresses and older men in those cardigan sweaters that think they have to dress a certain way because they're older. |
| caviartaste | posted 8-Jun-2004 11:40am Elderly is not something I relate in chronological age - to me it has to do with a persons health condition and/or how they "act" |
| Biggles | posted 8-Jun-2004 3:52pm When they really start to deteriorate. Can be at all sorts of ages. |
| mimind | posted 8-Jun-2004 8:01pm not by age...elderly has negative connotations that go with it in the U.S. so i would have to say its more a "quality of life" issue |
| ElvisFan67 | posted 8-Jun-2004 8:21pm 75 and beyond. |
| MssAmericat | posted 9-Jun-2004 12:37am I don't relate it to an age but the person...my dad's friend was still up working on his roof at 93 so sure wouldn't call him elderly then I have seen ppl my age (41) act VERY old... |
| MssAmericat | (reply to heyzeus1) posted 9-Jun-2004 12:38am Eeeeh? |
| romkey | posted 9-Jun-2004 9:26am I think of "elderly" as being an age where your ability to take care of yourself is seriously decreasing. For most people I think that would be sometime in their 70's, but there are plenty of people younger than that who I'd consider "elderly" and plenty of people who are older than that who I wouldn't consider "elderly". We have neighbors down the road who are in their late 80's, live on their own, still operate their farm. I don't consider them elderly. |
| heyzeus1 | (reply to MssAmericat) posted 9-Jun-2004 10:23am golfound curdnambit! |
| heyzeus1 | (reply to MssAmericat) posted 9-Jun-2004 10:26am oh yeah seeing your comment, i should note my grandpa is in his mid80's and still continues to build on his property. i helped him put in and bury a 1500 gallon cistern when i went to visit in march. so far he built the house (2 stories basement and greenhouse addition), 3 storage sheds, a number of gardens and greenhouses. |
| ASB | (reply to romkey) posted 9-Jun-2004 10:32am Have you been on a trip? |

That is great about your grandpa...we should all follow him |
| Violet | posted 10-Jun-2004 3:52am I would say 70. I think once upon a time I would have said 60, but as my mom approaches that age, I have a very hard time thinking of her as elderly. I will likely re-evaluate my choice many times in the future... |
| romkey | (reply to ASB) posted 10-Jun-2004 9:38am nope... just been busy... |
| ASB | (reply to romkey) posted 10-Jun-2004 12:06pm welcome back |
| cerealkiller | posted 12-Jun-2004 8:12pm I think 60, but don't know what I'll think in 9 years when I get there. Definitely no older that 65 would be the start of being an elderly person. |
| Dino | posted 13-Jun-2004 9:29am Can depend on the person.
I'll say at 65 |
| nasale | posted 13-Jun-2004 2:08pm The older I get, the more I push the number back..Age is relative, I think. Some people are a gonner when they are sixty and others are spry in their eighties. |
| ROCKMAN | posted 28-Jun-2004 9:30am It really depends on the person and how good of shape they're in. I |
