| they | posted 6-Mar-1999 9:52pm Spades and Shanghai Rummy are my favorite. |
| they | posted 6-Mar-1999 9:54pm Someone just told me that Pinochle has specially printed cards, my apologies if this is true... I have never played it. |
| romkey | posted 6-Mar-1999 10:31pm Mao |
| Pomeranian | posted 7-Mar-1999 3:57am Recently, a very sweet young man taught me to play gin rummy to pass the time away on a long plane trip. That was fun. I do love card games, and they are a great way to socialize with old friends and make new ones. romkey: what is Mao? It sounds interesting... |
| supplicant | posted 7-Mar-1999 6:53am With one or two players read a book or go to sleep :) With three players Euchre is perfect, with four players two teams of two for 500, with five players "Oh Crap!" is good (known by about five other names), for six: three teams of two for 500. Seven+ we don't normally get, so don't know about that... perhaps Oh Crap. |
| romkey | posted 7-Mar-1999 9:56am Pomeranian - it's a game played with four decks of cards shuffled together and a whole lot of esoteric rules which if I tried to explain them would probably cause a game to start, so I won't. Best taken with lots of gin and tonics, but it's not a drinking game. |
| jefff | posted 7-Mar-1999 12:36pm Pinochle, euchre, canasta, et al are played with modified 'traditional' decks - usually some subset of the numbers with multiple copies of each card (I don't remember them all, but pinochle is played with the 8-Ace of two decks, for instance). Of the above listed, I'd say Bridge, although I haven't played it in a coon's age (literally). My favorite of *all* card games is War of the Flowers - a Japanese card game that is played by three people. The deck has 48 (or 51 depending on the deck) cards, each one associated with a month of the year. Beautiful and challenging. |

| North79 | posted 7-Mar-1999 2:07pm "butt-hole"..nobody plays butt-hole? Thats all I DID through most of Junior high and half of high school. |
| Jane | posted 7-Mar-1999 3:08pm Egyptian Rat Screw! Has anyone heard of that? Its a variation on "War" |
| they | posted 7-Mar-1999 3:54pm Jane... how do you play? North79.. my SO says he's played butt-hole before, but I had never heard of it. |
| milktree | posted 7-Mar-1999 4:41pm I like bridge, but I don't know enough of the conventions to really play, it's also harder to find people to play than most of the games on this list. |
| bill | posted 7-Mar-1999 4:54pm Spades and "Pitch" (similar trump game) are fun but I forgot how to play! Oh, and Trumpet (technically a "board game") is also very good. |
| they | posted 7-Mar-1999 4:57pm Bill.. spades is a lot like the game Rook, that you have to buy special cards for. Although I prefer spades. |
| Dolemite | posted 7-Mar-1999 6:43pm My roommates an I play poker every Friday. It's a ritual. |
| Jane | posted 7-Mar-1999 7:06pm they- You play it like "War" basically. When a player puts down a face card, the next person has a certain number of chances to put down another face card, or else the first player gets the pile. If the second player puts down a face card, then the person after them has to beat that card. You also slap doubles. The object is to get the most cards. Hope that all made sense. My friends and I play it all the time. Its really easy once you get the hang if it. |
| supplicant | posted 7-Mar-1999 9:33pm I might go look up the rules but it sounds too basic to be much fun to me, unless you get drunk first ;) One of the things I like about Euchre and Oh Crap! is that you have to take risks not only on how many tricks you can take, but on what cards are out there since half the cards aren't even in play :) And 500 for similar reasons - you are taking risks on what your partner has and will be able to take. |
| Wicksy | posted 8-Mar-1999 4:58am cheat is great as well |
| lizzie | posted 8-Mar-1999 9:33am you forgot slap jack! what a hoot. And pitch (setback, as we called it) My mom taught me a game called Knuckles, where you try to get the lowest number of points in your hand. Jacks are 0, Aces 1, Twos 2, etc. If you get 4 jacks and an ace, you rap your knuckles on the table, and win the game. Otherwise whoever has the lowest number of points in their hand when the deck is done wins. |
| Jody | posted 8-Mar-1999 10:26am Other fun games are "I doubt it" (sometimes also known as bull$#it). I have also enjoyed russian bank and whist and fantan (which I once knew how to play, and have sadly forgotten). |
| doom | posted 8-Mar-1999 10:33am whist is my favorite but I can't find 3 others to play with. |
| grmbrand | posted 8-Mar-1999 5:25pm I used to be a normal person. Then I discovered Cribbage. |
| steve | posted 8-Mar-1999 6:01pm I like cribbage and Mao. (Mao is related to Crazy Eights.) The only modifications to the deck for canasta are the inclusion of Jokers and the mandatory use of two decks. |
| they | posted 8-Mar-1999 7:11pm Steve... I use jokers in spades... they are higher than aces. |

| bluebird1974 | posted 22-Jul-1999 12:08am Spades I am addicted I play on 4 different sites online. They you forgot Crap or opishaw (sp?). |
| SueBee | posted 24-Aug-1999 1:04am I really enjoy Spades but haven't played it for several years. I love Blackjack, but never play at the casinos around here because the minimum bets are too rich for my blood. I like the $2 tables in Nevada. A fun one my family used to play is 99 (similar to Uno but with regular cards). Each player put 75 cents in the pot, then somebody won it all. Not big stakes (that 75 cent game lasted a whole evening) but enough to add a little excitement. |
| bill | posted 24-Aug-1999 8:03am We used to play a game called guts. You get 2 cards each, with point scores similar to poker rules. Everyone antes. Then you either stay in or fold. If only one person stays in they get the pot and you ante again next round. If more than one person stays in, the winner gets the pot and the losers replace the pot. The pot can thus double and triple, and for a small initial ante you can stay in for several rounds. It's best played with a lot of people. |
| SueBee | posted 24-Aug-1999 11:39pm Bill - Who wins? Just high cards, or is a pair better? |
| bill | posted 26-Aug-1999 5:54pm I can't remember. It would seem that a straight or flush would be way to easy to get (I think). Still, the 2 card aspect isn't the essential part. You can play (5 or 7 card) poker with the same pot replacement rule. Jeez, now I really want to play poker. |

| SueBee | posted 31-Oct-1999 9:04pm I haven't heard of any of those. I guess my drinking game days have long since passed. |

| Analog | posted 12-Jun-2000 11:22pm I like trick-taking games. Except for Bridge. Bridge boggles my mind with all its anti-social communications restrictions. I'd like to find people to play Tarot with me. Some of the Tarot variants look like fun. |
