Recently, a very sweet young man taught me to play gin rummy to pass the time away on a long plane trip. That was fun. I do love card games, and they are a great way to socialize with old friends and make new ones.
romkey: what is Mao? It sounds interesting...

With one or two players read a book or go to sleep :) With three players Euchre is perfect, with four players two teams of two for 500, with five players "Oh Crap!" is good (known by about five other names), for six: three teams of two for 500. Seven+ we don't normally get, so don't know about that... perhaps Oh Crap.

Pomeranian - it's a game played with four decks of cards shuffled together and a whole lot of esoteric rules which if I tried to explain them would probably cause a game to start, so I won't. Best taken with lots of gin and tonics, but it's not a drinking game.

Pinochle, euchre, canasta, et al are played with modified 'traditional' decks - usually some subset of the numbers with multiple copies of each card (I don't remember them all, but pinochle is played with the 8-Ace of two decks, for instance).

Of the above listed, I'd say Bridge, although I haven't played it in a coon's age (literally).

My favorite of *all* card games is War of the Flowers - a Japanese card game that is played by three people. The deck has 48 (or 51 depending on the deck) cards, each one associated with a month of the year. Beautiful and challenging.

they- You play it like "War" basically. When a player puts down a face card, the next person has a certain number of chances to put down another face card, or else the first player gets the pile. If the second player puts down a face card, then the person after them has to beat that card. You also slap doubles. The object is to get the most cards.

Hope that all made sense. My friends and I play it all the time. Its really easy once you get the hang if it.

I might go look up the rules but it sounds too basic to be much fun to me, unless you get drunk first ;)

One of the things I like about Euchre and Oh Crap! is that you have to take risks not only on how many tricks you can take, but on what cards are out there since half the cards aren't even in play :) And 500 for similar reasons - you are taking risks on what your partner has and will be able to take.

you forgot slap jack! what a hoot. And pitch (setback, as we called it) My mom taught me a game called Knuckles, where you try to get the lowest number of points in your hand. Jacks are 0, Aces 1, Twos 2, etc. If you get 4 jacks and an ace, you rap your knuckles on the table, and win the game. Otherwise whoever has the lowest number of points in their hand when the deck is done wins.

The only modifications to the deck for canasta are the inclusion of Jokers and the mandatory use of two decks.

I really enjoy Spades but haven't played it for several years. I love Blackjack, but never play at the casinos around here because the minimum bets are too rich for my blood. I like the $2 tables in Nevada.

A fun one my family used to play is 99 (similar to Uno but with regular cards). Each player put 75 cents in the pot, then somebody won it all. Not big stakes (that 75 cent game lasted a whole evening) but enough to add a little excitement.

We used to play a game called guts. You get 2 cards each, with point scores similar to poker rules. Everyone antes. Then you either stay in or fold. If only one person stays in they get the pot and you ante again next round. If more than one person stays in, the winner gets the pot and the losers replace the pot. The pot can thus double and triple, and for a small initial ante you can stay in for several rounds. It's best played with a lot of people.

Bill - Who wins? Just high cards, or is a pair better?
bill Survey Central Gold SubscriberSilver Star Survey Creator

I can't remember. It would seem that a straight or flush would be way to easy to get (I think). Still, the 2 card aspect isn't the essential part. You can play (5 or 7 card) poker with the same pot replacement rule.
Jeez, now I really want to play poker.

I'd like to find people to play Tarot with me. Some of the Tarot variants look like fun.
