If you had to donate a million US dollars to charity, which ones would they be?

I left this in essay form because I cannot possibly list all charities. Let's assume that you have the entire million earmarked for charity alone. (Hey you are rich and want to save some tax dollars--OK?) Just tell me your thoughts on this. If you would and to whom the money goes. * smile *

Diseases that have no cure like Alzheimer's, AIDS, cancer; Autism/Asperger's research; local animal protection associations; associations that really help homeless and disabled people find jobs and homes; I'd like to help poor/lower middle class people buy their own homes since homebuying is so expensive where I live. Of course I'd have to research all these foundations to see if they're legit. These are a few I can think of right now.

Sheffield Youth Theatre, Red Cross, Medecins sans Frontieres (sp?). I might choose other small charities to give a little to as well.

I would donate $500,000 to The Hunger Site and $500,000 to Feed the Children. It's criminal to allow children to go hungry in this world when there is so much food.

Planned Parenthood, Animal Rescue League of Boston, Sierra Club, The Nature Conservancy, NPR. That's all I can think of right now, but there would probably be others.

I donate to a charity founded by an Australian woman that helps release Chinese bile-farmed bears from cages they are welded into for all their lives, then establishes sanctuaries. They are also involved in education of Chinese about animal welfare and empathy. I would give them the money.

hym, good question.

probabbly some *local* charity or local event, soup kitchen. Nothing national or big, but in a smaller area where the $$ would actually make a visible change. Or donate it for some good local cause like fixing up a school or buying lots of cheap computers for either poor getho kids living in the inter-city or the poor "white trash" trailer park people living along the river. If not local, then at least the state level (hell, we need it) or at the very least the natinal level, since I believe that charity starts at home, and we have enough problems at home. Sorry, but dont particuallry care too much for AIDS stricken starving Etheopian kids thousands of miles away.

Mostly the ones I've already donated money to - various civil liberties groups, women's (and general) shelters, AIDS support groups, a local animal shelter, some arts foundations.

I'd prefer not to set up my own foundation because I don't want to deal with the complications involved in doing so.

I would want to research various organizations I was considering giving to; I don't like supporting organizations that use a lot of the money donated to raise more money. I prefer to support organizations where a large percentage of every dollar given goes to the actual cause they're supposed to be doing.

The 12 St. reconstruction society. My house needs plenty of repair. Otherwise I would consult with my sister because she is politically aware and up on global events. If she was unavailable I would consult w. Zang. He seems to be and expert in those areas as well.

In the broad meaning of "charity" something like:

10% Center for Science in the Public Interest
10% Wikipedia
30% National Youth Rights Association
20% Immortality Research
30% Planned Parenthood
