| Biggles | posted 1-May-2004 1:01pm Not yet, but I will once I get my hands on it. |
| Enheduanna | posted 1-May-2004 1:14pm Yes, I read it and liked it a lot. It was The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. Thanks for the recommendation, caviartaste! |

| bill | posted 1-May-2004 2:11pm I must have been grumpy for the last survey, I would try to play along if we did this again. I've been reading more recently and I might be game for reading something different. |
| Zang | posted 1-May-2004 2:24pm Yes, in fact it took less than eight days from the time I said I would participate, until the time I announced completion! Can anyone beat that? |
| Enheduanna | (reply to Zang) posted 1-May-2004 8:21pm I can't beat that, but I can beat you! With a stick!
*runs after Zang with a stick* That's for looking at my bodacious ta-tas! |
| kitti723 | (reply to Zang) posted 1-May-2004 10:03pm I bet you're super smart. It makes me sick. My sister's like that and she let's you know it. Just like you. Jealous? Yes. It takes me a while to read a book but I do read. I don't have alot of spare time on my hands so sometimes it takes me a while to get through something but I am usually digging into 2 or more books at a time. I'd rather read than watch TV or go to the movies. I work in a movie store. *Not intended to insult. |
| iamdonte | posted 1-May-2004 11:39pm I didn't see that survey....too bad. I love reading...just won't have much time to read until summer (unless it is a book on tape). |
| Dino | posted 2-May-2004 6:38am I did not participate in that survey.
However, I did get recommended - on a seperate occasion by 'they' to read: 'A Blessing on the Moon' by Joseph Skibel. I went and ordered it on Amazon and I enjoyed it. (Thank you 'they') |
| ROCKMAN | posted 2-May-2004 8:34am I didn't sign up for a book in that survey. I still don't have time to sit and read a book either. |
| Irene007 | (reply to iamdonte) posted 2-May-2004 9:33am I love books on tape! I use them for long rides, it really passes the time and I find that I'll even slow down so I don't get to my destination too quickly just to hear more!! |
| iamdonte | (reply to Irene007) posted 2-May-2004 11:23am I know what you mean. I listen to at least 1 book a week in my commute to and from work everyday. I have about a 25 minute drive each morning and I have been known to sit in the parking lot for an additional 10 minutes or so to hear more. When I bought my truck, one of the things I told them that it had to have was a tape player. Since most of them no come equiped standard with cd players finding one that contained a tape player was a real challenge. It took them several hours to locate one and, luckily, it had both in it. I had told the guy at the dealership that I would not do business there if they could not get a tape player because I wasn't about to give up my books! |
| Irene007 | (reply to iamdonte) posted 2-May-2004 1:37pm Do you listen to them over and over? I don't so I find them quite expensive to buy. I'd like to find a place that buys used ones to re-sell, then I'd get more. I'm trying to turn my brother on to them, he's an avid reader (as we all are in the family) and we're always trading books. He travels a lot so I gave him one of my CD books recently (The Summons by John Grisham) and I hope that he'll get addicted - then I'll have someone to trade with!!
PS: I perfectly understand you sitting in the parking lot - I've done it too!! |
| iamdonte | (reply to Irene007) posted 2-May-2004 7:49pm I get all my books on tape through the public library. I have a few that I have bought over the years but most of what I listen to comes from the library. They have hundreds of books on tape. I think it originally started as books for the blind or for those who could not read. Now many people do what I do and listen to them in the car on the way to work or wherever. When you don't have time to sit and read much, this is the best way to go! |
| Irene007 | (reply to iamdonte) posted 3-May-2004 7:04am Ah... Sometimes it really bugs me to live in a French community! The local library probably doesn't have any English ones, I'd have to go downtown for that. Although, I have bought a French series "Le Roi Maudit" (The Damned King") - lots of intrigue, infidelity, cruelty and such.
Last one we bought (on my husband's insistence) was Dean Koontz "One Door Away From Heaven", it was stupid... and he didn't even listen to it!! |
| Zang | (reply to Enheduanna) posted 3-May-2004 11:27am Let's see those tat-tas again! |
| Zang | (reply to kitti723) posted 3-May-2004 11:32am I figured that if I was going to do it, I had better make a concerted effort. Otherwise I am liable to procrastinate. I make regular trips to the library and I'm quite a voracious reader. It doesn't take me very long to whip through a book. I think that one took me a couple of days. I usually read myself to sleep at night. Sometimes I will spend a good part of a weekend with my nose buried in a book. |
| Enheduanna | (reply to Zang) posted 3-May-2004 12:00pm *beats you more* |
| judgescratch | posted 3-May-2004 12:34pm Yes, I read it and it was OK.
A Whiff of Death by Asminov. |
| Iseult | posted 3-May-2004 5:12pm No, although I tried to. I was assigned a Stephen King book and I did buy it, but I could not get past first ten pages. King depresses me and makes me all gooey, so I decided to not to continue trying reading it. He reminds me of the time I tried reading James Morrow's "The Eternal Footman" or Aleister McLeod's "No Great Mischief" and ended up crying my eyes out. |
| Iseult | (reply to Enheduanna) posted 3-May-2004 5:14pm I read that book, too, some six years ago. I generally like Paolo Coelho, but I just can't enjoy it too much because not much happens. I like strong plotlines. |
| Iseult | (reply to Zang) posted 3-May-2004 5:15pm What book was it? |
| Enheduanna | (reply to Iseult) posted 3-May-2004 7:26pm I thought it had a great plot! Not your usual action-packed plot, but still definitely a plot. I know what you mean, but I like books that are a little more contemplative as well. |
| Zang | (reply to Enheduanna) posted 3-May-2004 10:45pm Has anyone ever told you that you're beautiful when you're angry? |
| Zang | (reply to Iseult) posted 3-May-2004 10:46pm Evening News by Marly Swick. It was okay, but I think it would appeal more to a parent. |
| iamdonte | (reply to Irene007) posted 4-May-2004 12:00am Too bad you can't get more books. When I find the rest of a set (I think I have two or three on tape) of Janet Evanovich's private eye novels, I'll get an address and send them to you, you are welcome to them. (Now, where did I put them?) It'll be summer time before I can do a real search for them, if you can wait that long. |
| Irene007 | (reply to iamdonte) posted 4-May-2004 2:04am I'd be more than happy and I certainly can wait!! I don't often get a chance to pick them up - last time was because we came upon a clearance sale from a chain store in Ottawa that was closing! If I can get Ben to listen to his stoopid Dean Koontz, I'll gladly send that one to you!! Write me at chateaushack@hotmail.com. |
| Enheduanna | (reply to Zang) posted 4-May-2004 9:16am Are you saying I'm not beautiful when I'm not angry?!
*brandishes stick again* |
| Zang | (reply to Enheduanna) posted 4-May-2004 9:30pm I just can't win can I? |
| iamdonte | (reply to Irene007) posted 4-May-2004 10:18pm Great. I'll send you an e-mail shortly. |
| Enheduanna | (reply to Zang) posted 4-May-2004 10:31pm Do you really want to? |
| mimind | posted 5-May-2004 12:12am wasnt here for that one but ive read lots latley |
| moonstone | posted 7-May-2004 1:53pm No, I didn't participate. |
| kitti723 | (reply to Zang) posted 8-May-2004 10:23am Admirable, I wish to be more educated. I have a hard time focusing. |
| Zang | (reply to kitti723) posted 8-May-2004 1:07pm I suppose it all comes down to priorities... |
| kitti723 | (reply to Zang) posted 11-May-2004 11:07am My mind does not allow me to follow through with all intentions. I have lots of plans but not many things solidify. I am working on this. I may even see a doctor. I am rather phobic of them and I always say I will then I cancel my appointments. See what I mean by not solidifying? What should I do? |
| Zang | (reply to kitti723) posted 11-May-2004 5:16pm I find that going out with my friends, having a few cocktails, and then unburdening myself of my problems is often helpful. |
| kitti723 | (reply to Zang) posted 11-May-2004 10:17pm I try that and then I get anxious in social settings and end up drinking too much too fast and staying out too late & feeling really bad about myself the next day cause I can't remember somethings and my SO doesn't drink at all & feel bad for coming so late. He is really tolerant & I am lucky to still have him since I used to do this too often. I only do this occasionally now, maybe once every 3-4 months. |
| Zang | (reply to kitti723) posted 12-May-2004 9:37am Maybe going out for coffee would be better then... |
| freebird | posted 14-May-2004 6:41pm nobody gave me a book to read |
| nasale | posted 22-May-2004 4:59pm I just got done reading The Stand (again) and Shogun (again). I love the big thick books. I'm in the middle of 'Atlas Shrugged' but I find it tedious. I like Bellefleur and am planning on rereading it too. I am a bookaholic! |
| rtvN8geo265 | posted 29-Jun-2004 1:40pm what survey!?!?... oh, wait. that survey. |
| Zang | (reply to Biggles) posted 18-Jul-2004 12:52am Have you got your hands on it yet? |
| Biggles | (reply to Zang) posted 16-Aug-2004 9:58am No |
| Zang | (reply to Biggles) posted 16-Aug-2004 11:06am Okay. I understand if you've got more than enough reading to do for school... |
| Biggles | (reply to Zang) posted 16-Aug-2004 11:24am Well supposedly, but I seem to find plenty of time for extra reading too |
| Zang | (reply to Biggles) posted 16-Aug-2004 11:29am Wow! That must be some attic! |
| Biggles | (reply to Zang) posted 16-Aug-2004 11:33am It's pretty small, but absolutely packed in a really disorganised way. My dad has a habit of findng bags on the landing, presuming they're destined for the attic and putting them up. I found a watch that I bought about 8 years ago, had for about 2 days and then "lost". It must have been sent upstairs ina bag with other bits and pieces, and then being swooped on by my father. I even found a bag of all my old notes from school - I'd bagged them up to be thrown away! |
| Zang | (reply to Biggles) posted 16-Aug-2004 10:31pm ...and let me guess, Dad's the last one to get involved in anything resembling "cleaning out the attic"? His job is stuffing things in there? |
| Biggles | (reply to Zang) posted 17-Aug-2004 5:38am At the moment he's working 4 jobs and is about a smidge off having a heart attack or turning into a total alcoholic |
| Zang | (reply to Biggles) posted 18-Aug-2004 9:33am |

| icurok | posted 27-Aug-2004 2:11pm This was before my time....or after it, whichever way you look at it. |
