Never, in part because I don't have a printer and in part because there is a post office about 2 blocks from where I work and I can also buy stamps at a nearby ACE checkcashing store. |

I looked into doing this at my previous job and it was not as easy as the postage machine we had. I hardly use stamps so I can pick them up once a year or so at the post office. |
| ASexyBabe | | posted 25-Apr-2004 7:45am |
Oh and I can also buy stamps through the ATM machine. |

Nope-I usually buy postage stamps from the post office counter at the mall. |

I tried it and decided that it wasn't worth the extra expense. |

No because I don't use postage stamps very often and I've never heard of this until now and it sounds like something I couldn't use anyway. |

I was going to try it, but you have to download their software and they don't have a Mac version available. I thought maybe I could start mailing stuff from our store without having to make a trip to the post office since we get a lot of customers from the islands that are always asking if we ship so they can avoid a ferry trip. |

Does the postage cost more than if you go to the P. O. or do they charge a monthly fee or something? |

You can rent postage meters/scales from places like pitney bowes where you prepay postage and then when you use the postage on the meter you can call over the phone and refill it or send a check in the mail. I don't know if you have looked into UPS or Fedex they will pick the items up and I am sure your store could get an account there. At the place I used to work we used all of these methods to ship things. We would have to call fedex or ups and tell them we had a pickup. UPS and Fedex would send the company a bill each month. You can also schedule them online I think. You can always get shipping costs before the item is sent and bill the customer ahead of time or charge their credit card. If any of these methods charge you fees you could always have a handling fee along with the shipping fee to cover costs. |

Thanks for the info! My boss is very CHEAP and always wants to keep expenses down (which is a good thing, but he takes it to the extreme). The stamps.com place had a special where you could get a free postage scale, which I figured my boss couldn't gripe about. There's no way he'd go for the cost of the Pitney Bowes meter. Also, I'm hesitant to get into this big because I'm not sure it would be worthwhile. I'm afraid we'll either not get enough call for it to make it worth investing in the equipment, or we'll have so many people wanting us to ship stuff that we won't have the manpower to get it done. I looked into UPS and I seem to recall they don't deliver out to the islands where we get most of our requests. Either that or it was slow or really expensive, I just remember it was a dead end. |

there's a monthly fee... they give you a startup credit (or did when I signed up) but then there's something like a $5 month fee, plus you have to pay for the stamp paper... so it ends up costing more, which is okay to me if you're using it a lot and need lots of stamps and it's really convenient... but it just wasn't convenient enough to be worth it to me |

if you end up doing something like UPS or Fedex, Fedex at least lets you do everything on the web, keep an address book, and just print out the fedex form - waaaay better than having to fill in the forms by hand. |

Ah, well, we have no computer at work, much less an internet connection, so we're pretty much stuck doing things by hand. |
| ASexyBabe | | (reply to SueBee) posted 25-Apr-2004 10:32pm |
Sounds like maybe you are stuck with going to the post office |
SueBee | | (reply to ASexyBabe) posted 25-Apr-2004 11:32pm |
Yep. And we don't have time to do that, so I guess our customers will just have to come to us. |
| freebird | | posted 26-Apr-2004 4:11pm |
No, Never. I just buy them at the grocery store or at the post office when I am taking in our office mail to be sent. |
