| ASB | (reply to Kristal_Rose) posted 25-Apr-2004 10:12pm They are smoked and sometimes roasted and dehydrated. Roasting or maybe even smoking might cause carmalization which would be sweet. I have not seen these at my local grocery. I will have to keep an eye out for them so ASBT can try them |

| ASB | (reply to SueBee) posted 25-Apr-2004 10:15pm I bet it would be too hot for me. I suffer great pains to cook for ASBT that pepper juice will not wash off sometimes. If I touch my face I am in for hours of pain |
| Enigma | posted 25-Apr-2004 10:31pm Decidedly odd |
| SueBee | (reply to ASB) posted 25-Apr-2004 11:41pm You haven't tried chipotles? The smoky flavor is really good, and they are a little hot. Definitely not hotter than a habanero though! Habaneros are the hottest peppers, aren't they?
I tried using latex gloves when I was chopping fresh jalapeños so I wouldn't get the juice on my hands, but then I had the horrible latex smell on my hands. That was worse to me than the risk of rubbing my eye with jalapeño residue! (In fact, I just realized I'm making a face as I type, remembering how icky the latex smell was! |
| ASB | (reply to SueBee) posted 25-Apr-2004 11:48pm Habaneros are the hottest ones I know of. If you find some hotter ones let me know so I can feed them to Dave |
| SueBee | (reply to ASB) posted 25-Apr-2004 11:58pm There was a damn hot dried pepper in a beef dish I shared with my brother-in-law at a Chinese restaurant, but I don't know what kind it was. Nobody told me I was supposed to pick those out! It was like chewing on a shrimp shell, and I chewed it up and swallowed it before the heat hit. I think there was steam blowing out of my ears! I don't like stuff THAT hot! It was painful! |

| Kristal_Rose | (reply to ASB) posted 26-Apr-2004 7:22pm Our California supermarkets have have bins of diverse fresh peppers, and the canned section stocks several brands of diverse peppers, mole, nopalitos (cactus), etc. (oh, and a whole aisle of salsas) I recall in contrast going to canada where we were lucky to find one brand of salsa, beans, and tortillas on the bottom of a remote aisle (so Georgé, Jésus, and his wife Maria don't starve, I guess).
My recipe for a habonero sauce: crush haboneros in a jar of scotch and olive oil, and steep on a woodstove for three days. |
| Kristal_Rose | (reply to SueBee) posted 26-Apr-2004 7:25pm I think those thin long red ones found in chinese food are a type of serranto pepper, but most serrantos in cans are much milder than the ones those chinese seem to find. Did you ever see the simpsons episode at the chile fest where Homer ate some halucinogenic pepper which looked like a radioactive coral snake? |

I lived with a (albino) ratty briefly (because of my guest). I bought her a birdcage and made her a wheel (which she hasn't used), before the guest gave her to the neighbor downstairs. |
| ASB | (reply to Kristal_Rose) posted 26-Apr-2004 8:06pm Have you ever tried Dave's insanity sauce? ASBT says it is the hotest sauce out there. |
| Kristal_Rose | (reply to ASB) posted 27-Apr-2004 1:29am Yes, and I'm fairly sure I've had hotter. I was dissappointed when my bro said the same thing and had me try some. |

| SueBee | (reply to ASB) posted 27-Apr-2004 1:46am Do you not enjoy the heat of peppers in your food, or is it a heartburn problem, or both? I love spicy hot food to an extent, but not the really hot stuff. I have a limit! |

After he comes down, the spirit fox still makes brief appearances. Yeah, it was fun. |
| Biggles | (reply to Kristal_Rose) posted 27-Apr-2004 7:39am Our ratties never liked wheels either. I think they were too clever for them - knew they weren't getting anywhere. They did like ropes with knots in them tied in loops from the top of the cage when they were little though. |
| judgescratch | posted 27-Apr-2004 7:42am Nope. I put hot sauce on *plain* bagels and cream cheese. Too bland, otherwise. |
| ASB | (reply to SueBee) posted 27-Apr-2004 7:48am I don't enjoy them at all. For me peppers=pain. As far as the heartburn goes. I have not had a single case of heartburn since I started atkins |

| Kristal_Rose | (reply to Biggles) posted 27-Apr-2004 7:08pm Are you gravitating more towards a specialty. Is the dorm still noisy? Are you dating? Do they make you wear shoes? |
| Biggles | (reply to Kristal_Rose) posted 27-Apr-2004 7:26pm A speciality in what? In my subject? I'm mostly headed towards tropical disease at the moment. I like macroparasites and insect vectors. I'm doing an entomology course this week in fact, and thinking of signing on for some voluntary work at the university museum sorting bugs. Spending time with the strange entomologists is a bit of a drawback though.
Where I'm living this year is much quieter than last year. It's not right in the city centre so there aren't random drunks going by. At about 1am there are a load of people coming back from the clubs, but if I'm asleep I mostly don't wake up now. No noisy neighbours this year either. We don't have a water supply at the moment though - some people who were digging up the road managed to cut through the water mains and it won't be fixed until tomorrow morning at least. We've had to go out to buy bottled water just so we can brsh our teeth and not dehydrate too much (iwe're having a bit of a heatwave). No dating at the moment and no possibilities on the horizon. Oxford's full of Christians and Tories, neither of which appeal - and some people are Christian Tories! Life's good though As for the shoes How are you? |

| Kristal_Rose | (reply to Biggles) posted 28-Apr-2004 5:34am let me get this straight, you want to sort bugs, but are worried about hanging out with folks who choose to sort bugs? We're having a heatwave too. I find I don't like to eat when it's too hot, just drink all day. A couple days ago I distilled a quart of water. I'm not sure which costs more, a quart of water or simmering the stove for a couple hours. Water costs at least as much as soda here, and distilled tap water tastes much better than straight from the tap. Yow I'm good, lot's going on, going to a corporate reform activist movie tomorrow, hanging out with good friends, working on projects without much distraction/confusion/procrastination, like a tandem bike moped conversion and online tarot software. One friend just gave me a mountain of bizarre clothes. One blouse is like a stretchy puffer fish or a collage of pyramidal flower buds. Kinda gotta heatwave hangover. |

| Biggles | (reply to Kristal_Rose) posted 28-Apr-2004 1:15pm The entomologists are a bit...I don't know. They're friendly and they teach well but they're a bit off-putting. An odd pair.
Our heatwave is pretty much over. Well, it's still hot, but there;s no sunshine. I'm quite relieved actually. I'm not ready for summer yet! It makes me not want to eat much too, or just eat light food like salads but that's so difficult to have in all the time. I think I'll have pasta tonight. Water here is generally fairly tasty. Yorkshire Water is the best, filtered through the peat of the Peak District and through limestone - lovely stuff How does a tandem bike moped conversion work? Are you taking bits from each to form some kind of super-bike, or somehow joining the two together? I think I've seen material like the stuff your blouse is made of - kind of crinkly and hard looking coming out in little nubs all over? I saw a lot of t-shirts made from it about a year ago - looked like it could be uncomfortable to wear. |
| uible | posted 28-Apr-2004 1:21pm If one is eating hot peppers with or in something - it is not at all odd.Thinking it is odd would be odd.
If one is eating hot peppers by themselves, just here's a dish of hot peppers. That is odd. I've seen a person pop a jalapeno in her mouth and just eat it straight. It was odd, very odd. I think the Iron Chef guy is a very little odd for taking a bite out of a yellow pepper at the beginning of the show. |
| Kristal_Rose | (reply to ASB) posted 28-Apr-2004 6:24pm Where are you? |
| Kristal_Rose | (reply to Biggles) posted 28-Apr-2004 6:38pm I'm attaching an electric motor and a small gas motor to the back half of the frame. Those will drive a flywheel mounted in a fork where the rear seatpost was, and that in turn will drive a gear on the rear crank. If I do steam, the pistons will go from the seatpost down to the cranks where the rear pedals had been.
Our water is filtered through biomass (algae) which soaks up much of the bio and chemical waste. That in turn is used as (probably poisonous) fertilizer. Supposedly the same happens with our sewage. I think our society has reached a point where we should indeed be recycling our water and not relying upon our oceans and rain clouds to do the job. Perhaps our water processing should be paid for through industrial taxes. That would encourage them to set strict industrial standards on their own pollution to cut purification costs (as long as there were legal minimum tap-water standards). |
| Biggles | (reply to Kristal_Rose) posted 28-Apr-2004 6:49pm There are a lot of problems with recycling water. In the centre of the south of England where there's not so much rain, they recycle a lot of water. A lot more boys are growing "breasts" because recycled sewer water has a lot of oestrogen in it from women urinating who are on the pill. |

| Biggles | (reply to Kristal_Rose) posted 29-Apr-2004 6:00am I wonder if that's a problem on space-flights where there are female crew members? The women would have to be on the pill, and all the water's getting recycled... |
