Yeah...I'm on the "Do Not Call" list, as well. I haven't seen much of a difference, either. I don't know that it was ever deemed legal to kick it into action....but I'm not sure.

I was called by a fireman's charity and I gave them some money. (though, it wasn't non-profit)
I am on the don not call list and it seems to be working for the most part.
I also got a ton of calls from politicians before the NH primary.

I'm on the "Do not call list" (national as well as state) so I don't get them anymore. I have gotten them in the past, but I don't remember what the last one I got was. Yesterday I got the pre-recorded call urging me to come to the State House Thursday to protest gay marriage by trying to get some state Supreme Court justices removed.

I am now on a Do Not Call list but in the past a couple I can remember were a local newspaper subscription and a call from the phone company -- I think this was for long distance. I told them I never called long distance -- this is the truth.

I can't remember. Until recently we've had a cell phone and never got telemarketing calls on it and have yet to get any on our land line, but of course I'm on national "do not call" list. Before that it was my roomies phone and he wouldn't pick up calls that said "out of area" on the caller i.d. so if it was a telemarketer, he didn't talk to them.
darkshadowsseeker
(reply to bill) posted 19-Apr-2004 10:57am

Even if you are on the "do not call" list, it's legal for political and survey pollsters to call you as they aren't considered telemarketers, but market researchers (I work in the industry) which are exempt.. The reason being that they aren't trying to sell you anything. The same goes for charitable organizations and companies you've done busiess previously with (such as a credit card co), but you can request that they no longer call you.

My cell phone company offered me some deal where I could add someone else to my account. There really isn't anyone appropriate for that sort of thing so I turned them down.

I don't have a landline, just a cell, so the only "telemarketers" that call me are people I already do business with; cell phone company, ISP, bank, credit card companies...

There was only one telemarketer calling us, but it was all the time. They were trying to sell us magazines. I told them we get enough magazines, we don't want any more, they are creating clutter. Then she asked if I wanted to buy movies. I said No. They called almost every day in March, until David yelled at them. They haven't called us since.

A mobile phone. Or more precisely theywere going to give me a free mobile phone. She was reluctant to discuss the nitty gritty details of how much the contract was worth until she had sent me the phone.

She wasn't very good, bless her. She was from a call centre in India (you could tell) and it sound like she was reading from a script.

I used to get calls from a police charity that was collecting on behalf of "local police chiefs in New Hampshire". I asked our local police chief about it and he told me that he was aware of the organization and that local police departments never saw a dime from it. He wouldn't donate money to this organization himself...

I know!

What was really funny was that the woman that called didn't have a clue to watch she was talking about. She said the federal government of Mississippi had contacted her company asking for them to help people since the gas prices are rising. FEDERAL government of MISSISSIPPI? That really threw me for a loop. Not to mention that I don't see any government agency wanting to help anyone with gas prices! It was such a crock!

hmm... it's just so hard to say "no" to a police or fireman (authority)!
That book I read, "Influence", had a lot of say about stuff like that. This guy used: authority, reciprocation, likability, and commitment influence techniques on me. They were giving out tickets to a Crystal Gale concert in the southern part of the state (which I didn't want), (reciprocation) Then after I said, OK, he mentioned that it was not tax deductible, and I was surprised (I see that as a kind of litmus test for charities), but I had committed (commitment), so I didn't feel I could back out. Oh, and he was very pleasant (likability) on the phone. It was only $30, but in hindsight, I think I was a bit bamboozled. I'm pretty sure they use the money to lobby government on fireman issues (which doesn't seem so bad, actually).

In the future, my response will be "let me talk with our local XX department first", which is what I told them. When they called back I told them "I contribute directly to our local XX department, sorry".

When they call ask them to remove you from the list they are calling off of. They legally have to honor your request and you can get them in trouble if they call again. Make sure you tell them you are on the list.

He was selling me long distance from AT&T. When I told him I had a cell phone for that, he said it was a "waste of money" and continued his pitch. He started going on and on, so I just put down the phone. I figure it's on his dime, let him go on. The phone didn't start beeping until about 5 minutes passed, so I figure he must've been selling his guts out.
