This was supposed to be Single choice question, but what can ya do?
As for Other, four words: Solid gold cat toys (I love my cats). |

Uhm...how about a harem of men? No sexism here.... |

military surplus?! nasty weapons?! I'd make some conservative and diversified investments, work on some way to spread around a lot of it to my friends and family, and start having lots of fun. Oh, I'd quit my job too. Maybe I'd hire some programmers to implement some software I always wanted to create. I'd build a house with my wife. Buy a few really nice cars. I'd start competing with romkey in a never ending new gadget battle. Perhaps I'd create a company to produce some new gadgets that I dream up. I'd move to the country, start a commune, my own religion perhaps. I'd put ads for Survey Central on TV and billboard in all major cities. I'd buy out Microsoft, then turn it into a non-profit organization dedicated to the production and distribution of open source software. |

That much money is more than I could spend in this lifetime. Assuming I live another 45 years I would need to spend more than $1.2 million per day for the rest of my life to spend it all. |
romkey | | posted 25-Feb-1999 9:09am |
I already know that I'd do more than one of these things with less money. These are very small scale things for $20 billion (except for buying a country, and if you want to do that and make it work you'd probably better work up to it so you have a clue what's going on). For me there's chairy, impoving the standard of living of myself and my friends, investments, and with that level of financing, funding some major research into a few areas that I'm particularly interested in.

Guess I'd better do research into new gadgets, too.

"Chairy" was Pee Wee Herman's talking chair. For romkey, there will always be Chairy. ...or wait, is chairy some new gadget? ...a talking chair! I've never heard of it! Damn, he's beat me again! |

I rated this as a bad survey 'cuz it's pretty clear when you're creating a survey (and Brian, this is not your first, or even 21st survey) whether it's to be a single-choice or multiple choice.
I'd use big chunks of the money to invest & take the proceeds to fund world-changing projects, like finding new/improved energy sources, making space travel cheaper, figuring out how our brains work and what affects them, and wiring up communities that want it. The latter project could have the greatest impact, over 3/4 of the world's population has yet to make a telephone call, must less surf the net at lunch-hour to use SC! |

We've had a question similar to this before I think. I would open an animal sanctuary for abused and abandoned animals. |

First of all, this is a really recent repeat. Second of all, asking someone what *one* thing they'd do with $20B is kind of silly, since there are a *lot* of things you can do with that kind of money. I checked all the ones I'd be likely to do. The weapons and women don't hold a lot of interest for me. |

As long as we're dreaming...I'd probably see if I could get in on funding the research foundation with romkey, since I'm guessing we'd have similar research interests. I wouldn't buy a small country, but I might underwrite a project like the one in Davis, CA that was profiled in TIME last week, an ecologically efficient and effective community, and encourage my interested friends to move in. With that kind of money I'd definitely start a theater company. I'd contribute heavily to charity and go to some of the cooler charity events I hear about. I'd commission one of the high-end designers to do a full line of designer clothing for large women. I hear Mizrahi's looking for work :) I'd expand my art collection and probably start some kind of grant program to support artists whose work I enjoy. I would have a child and adopt several more. I would buy flats in several cities and probably a house somewhere rural. I'd hire my boss to look after my money. |

i would probably pay off my debts, share with my family and friends and also give a lot to charity and to help with hunger in the world..... |

I would create a new car company in Antartica. |
| kadai | | posted 25-Feb-1999 9:24pm |
I'd pay debt, give a bunch to charities, bail out a few friends (anonymously), invest the rest, live off the interest, take lots of yoga classes and bake lots of bread in my copious spare time. |

and hire a darn good accountant. |

I think I'll give in to the urge and say that, yes, this survey is stupid. And to think I made ones just as campy when I started. Somebody hit me. |

What about "start-up/invest in a company/non-profit to do x?"
No, I meant "x" as in a variable - not a whole office building full of giggling professionals. Although... |

Real estate. Lots of real estate. I think $20 billion is too much to think about really. Any reason this specific amount was chosen? |
| Handle | | posted 28-Feb-1999 8:55pm |
I'd give a million dollars each to 20000 of my closest friends. |

Private space program. |
| wynkin |
Since we are given only one choice, I would pay off debts first. I wouldn't feel comfortable doing anything until I knew I was totally out of debt. Then I would share with family & friends, give to charity, invest and shop. |

Other than the Harem question (That was a piss-poor option on my part), and the fact that I miss-clicked an option, I see nothing wrong with this survey that would garner such a bad rating! |
dab |
Hey, I liked the harem option. I'd just rather go into space. |

The truth is I go to movies and eat out about as often as I like anyway. But I marked a whole bunch of the other options. With $20,000,000,000 I could have my own army, never mind a few piddly guns. |

I really don't know what I would do first......faint I suppose....then I'd go out and buy new VW beetles in all the colors and park them out in front of my house colorized lightest to darkest. I would go on a huge eating binge and then run down to California and have major liposuction..a tummy tuck and a breast lift then off to shop on Rodeo Drive.....I would hire delicious men to follow me around and serve my every whim...."Manuel, could you towel me off now!" I would rent Disneyworld for a few weeks and take my SO and child and a few friends....My house would have indoor and outdoor heated pools, a library, a movie theatre and carnival rides....I would get my whole body tattooed from head to toe...I'd hire Brad Pitt for one night of passion and then toss him away like a used tampon...I'd send letters to all the men who I loved that never loved me back saying..."HA HA HA! Money heals all wounds!" I'd start my own record label and become a famous rock star and have a wild love affair with Marilyn Manson....I'd buy Pepsico, Inc. and a pony. |
