You know the fried & battered strips of chicken they serve at restaurants, why do they call them "Chicken Fingers"?

I have no idea. I don't eat chicken, so this isn't something I think about.

They call them "Chicken Fingers" so as not to be confused with "Fish Fingers". "Chicken Fingers" are the ones which are made out of chicken. "Fish Fingers" are the ones which are made out of sawdust. Then of course you have your "Lady Fingers" which are made out of...

They look like fingers. Some places call them chicken strips because they stopped shaping them to look like fingers.

I guess...

Because they're made of chicken, and shaped like fingers.

Because they are finger shaped... look up finger in the dictionary and you'll find that the 2nd definition is self-referential ("something that resembles a finger").

Because they are finger shaped pieces of chicken?!

That's a good question, because you'd think they'd want to gross people out as little as possible, and the name chicken fingers does not help with that.

Thank God, I was sure chicken's didn't have fingers. At least I thought not. I feel so relieved. Thanks so much.

Erm, because they are made of chicken and bear a passing resemblance to fingers?

I believe there is a Chinese Dim Sum dish that consists of a chicken's claw gripping a meatball or something like that. I don't think you're suppose to eat the chicken's (fingers?) though.

Because it has become customary in the food industry to refer to long strips of things as fingers.
Cf. Lady fingers (longish strips of cake), Chicken fingers, etc.
It's "finger food"!

For the same reason they call those small, spongy cakes "lady fingers". Because of their shape.

Same reason they call them buffalo wings.

Chickens *do* have fingers * smile * They're just covered up by the wings. Look for the phalanges below - they're bones making up the fingers or toes. Grossed out now? * wink *

Because they look just like steak fingers and it was probably easy to call them that.

actually... I'm pretty sure you are supposed to eat the feet. I'm not sure there's any meatball included. I always skip that cart at dimsum.

Same reason they call fish fingers - fingers. They are finger shaped and made of fish. I think in America you call them fish sticks. We call them 'Fish Fingers'. And now we have veg fingers.

 * duh! * b/c the idea all got started when someone was cutting potatos back in the day, and they accidently cut their finger, and it fell in the frier. Doesn't everyone know this?

I think they call them chicken fingers because they are long and thin like fingers. Plus, if you call them fingers, kids will think they are cool and want to eat more of them! * evil smile *

None of the restaurants I've gone to call them chicken fingers. I've seen terms such as chicken breast fillets, chicken tenders, chicken strips, but not chicken fingers. Maybe I'm eating at the wrong restaurants.
